Chapter One: "Hope"
Nina had finally ventured out for the first time in weeks and now she was paying for it, she thought as she rotated her shoulder blades and massaged her neck with her hand. She'd spent the day with Don Lothario, her boyfriend. Unfortunately, since they lost their child after Nina fell down the stairs she had broken off their intimate relationship and their engagement. But being with Don today had brought her to her senses and made her realise that she had possibly been a bit too hasty in calling it quits. Though, Nina had only been home a couple of days and Don hadn't yet got round to fully cleaning the house up.

He insisted he wanted to keep the Christmas Tree up since they hadn't properly celebrated Christmas due to being in hospital. But it wasn't just that, Don had stopped looking after himself and devoted all of his free time to making sure Nina's needs were fulfilled. She wasn't used to so much attention from Don, she was sure he felt guilty but Nina didn't know why. She had explained to him her fall was an accident and that she didn't blame him, but she sensed he couldn't forgive himself. Nina knew deep down he could be attributed to the cause of her miscarriage but Nina would never tell him that. But still, she couldn't let go of the fact that if only he had been in the house when she fell their baby might have survived. Suppressing all of these anxieties, she smiled and invited Don to sit with her.

"Listen, I hope you enjoyed today as much as I did?" Don asked as Nina smiled and nodded "But I haven't forgotten about what you said to me at the hospital and, if you still want some space between us then I think I should move out." Don shocked Nina with his announcement.

"Move out? Don't you want to be with me anymore?" Nina asked with worry. "No, of course not. I can't stand not being with you. That's partially why I think I should move out, if you really want to give this break a go then I want to give you your space." "Space? I don't need space I need someone who sticks by me and doesn't bail at the first sign of trouble." "I'm not bailing, I thought it was what you wanted."

"All I wanted was for you to understand I wasn't ready to get back to normal yet. Before I couldn't even look at you without..." "Hating me" Don finished Nina's sentence off. "No. I couldn't look at you without feeling like I'd let you down." "You haven't let me down." Don said with confusion. "Is that because you didn't want a kid yet?" Nina sighed. "No. I wanted a kid more than anything. What I said when we were arguing," Nina put up a finger to stop Don from bringing up the past but Don felt he had to explain, "I was talking out of my butt, I didn't mean any of it. I wanted to start a family with you because I love you. I still love you. That's why I think I should go, I need to respect your wishes and give you some space." "Don." Nina said as she placed her hand on his.

"I love you too." Don smiled and grasped Nina's hand. "Nina, I really want to respect your wishes. But would it be alright if I kiss you?" Don asked. Nina let out a silent laugh as she coyly smiled. Everything was alright now, she thought. Nina felt as if their problem's were finally coming to an end.

"I'll let you do a lot more than that if you promise to take these decorations down tomorrow." Nina bargained as Don jumped up and almost took Nina on the kitchen worktop right then. "Deal!" Nina stood up and headed with Don towards the bedroom, but as she took a few steps she paused and looked in pain. "Nina, are you okay?" Don asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine I think. Just stood up too quick." Nina said as she put a hand on her stomach to stop herself from feeling queasy. But the pain wasn't subsiding, in fact it was getting worse.

Don looked on in horror as Nina coiled over and cried out in pain. "Don, call the hospital." She managed to say before collapsing on the floor.

Don was too stunned to try and catch her, even when she had reached the floor he just stood there staring at her. With his mind elsewhere, it took another scream from Nina to jolt him from his thoughts and he rushed over to grab the phone.

Chapter Two: "Not Quite The Mother"
Dina soaked the sponge and cleaned up the last of her mess with a sigh. This morning she had woke up felling so well. Her, Mortimer and Alex had all had breakfast together and she had kissed Mortimer goodbye as he went to shop for furniture for their nursery. When she waved Alex off as he went out with his friends, she told him to be back in time for dinner and he had complied. She felt like a proper mother! But when it came to lunch she opened the fridge and was hit by a whole host of smells that strangely overwhelmed her. She promptly held on to the kitchen counter and emptied her guts all over it! It was as if Ed's baby was reminding her that she had no right to be this happy when she was living with a guilty secret. She had not spoken to Ed or even seen him since their last meeting before Christmas. With Shaun moving in with Brandi and Dina once again refusing to love him, perhaps he had moved away. No, she thought as the phone rang, nothing is ever that simple.

The automated voice on the other end informed her she had missed a call whilst she was throwing up. Pressing the digits, she tensed up as she heard a panicked Don on the other end.

The message said Nina was back in hospital, but for what reason it didn't say. Dina knew it had to do with her miscarriage, but she assumed Nina was better. Hanging up, she called Don back to find out some answers, he was never good at leaving a coherent message. Unfortunately she was informed his mobile phone was switched off, which she realised made sense since he was in a hospital. But if he didn't have the time to wait outside for her to call him back, surely Nina's condition must be serious. Trying to stay calm she left Don a message asking him to phone her again soon. Dina was a bit shaken now, she had planned a day of relaxing by the pool. She couldn't relax now, not after hearing that. Even though her sister had been back home neither of them had talked to or seen each other. She felt stupid for letting their silly feud go on this long, Nina still didn't even know Dina was pregnant. A sudden wave of relief came over her as she heard a ring, but then realised it was the doorbell.

Her pleasant feeling was replaced by another nauseous wave as she opened the door to see Cassandra. Surveying her slender figure she thanked god she had made the effort to get dressed this morning instead of just hanging around the house in her maternity clothes. Cassandra remained a few feet away, stubbornly refusing to greet Dina.

"Cassandra, what a pleasure to see you. Would you like to come in." Dina said in a sickly pleasant manor that made her toes curl. She figured there was no use in arguing with Cassandra, she had neither the time nor the patience. "I just came over to see Alexander actually, could you tell him I'm waiting outside for him." Cassandra ordered as she remained fixed to the sidewalk, refusing to continue with their conversation. "You can tell him yourself when you see him." Dina indignantly remarked. "I beg your pardon?" Cassandra said in an annoyed tone. "He's out with his friends, when he comes back you'll be able to tell him." Dina said as she spun around and headed back inside.

Upon hearing a very high-pitched and quick squeak escape from Cassandra's mouth she rolled her eyes and looked back. "You are welcome to wait inside until then." Dina offered. Cassandra tucked her fringe behind her ears as she replied, "I think I'll do that, make sure you're not running my father off his feet with your incessant demands." "My incessant demands?" Dina raised her voice as Cassandra's mouth curled up at the corners ever so slightly. 'No' Dina though to herself, 'that's just what she wants'.

"I have no idea what you're talking about but Mortimer informed me he would be out for the morning." "So it's just you?" Cassandra asked in slightly dejected tone. Dina nodded and politely waved Cassandra in. For a moment she just stood on the path with her arms folded and nose held high in the air. Then, as if entering a Royal ball she walked into the Hacienda with an elegant grace. As soon as her feet made it inside Dina slammed the door shut and jokingly laughed it off as Cassandra looked at her with wide eyes. 'This was going to be interesting', Dina though to herself.

Chapter Three: "Secrets From Her Past"
When Don returned to the ward after leaving a message for Dina, he was taken aside by Dr. Crane for a talk. He knew from past experience that this meant bad news, and he wasn't sure he was strong enough right now to take anymore bad news, what else was there left to go wrong in his life? "We're prepping Nina for surgery now. The good news is it's just some minor incisions and she'll be back home tomorrow." Dr. Crane informed Don, who had rushed Nina in around twelve hours earlier. "Why has she had to wait so long, what's wrong with her?" Don asked, eager to know the results of Nina's tests she had earlier on.
|
| |
cree: 26.08.2006 - mis a jour: 26.08.2006
"Nina hadn't quite healed fully from the procedure she underwent last month, this attributed to some internal bleeding and that's why we're going in there now to fix her up. Now this is usual with a small percentage of women, but due to her circumstances I must say if I knew earlier I would have most definitely kept Nina in longer." "What circumstances? You said yourself when she left that she'd recovered excellently." Don argued. "Yes that was the case then, but that was before I found out that Nina has had a previous abortion."
|
| |
cree: 26.08.2006 - mis a jour: 26.08.2006
Don stared into Dr. Crane's eyes as he spoke. He wasn't the type of man that would lie, but surely he must have been wrong. "Nina's never had an abortion before." "Well that's what she said too but the results don't lie Mr. Lothario, Nina's test results showed signs of a previous abortion, and a sloppy one at that. If I'd known this before hand, perhaps something could have been done to counter the effects of the procedure to remove..." Dr. Crane stopped his sentence early, knowing that Don was smart enough to understand where he was going.
|
| |

"All I can do now is make sure Nina doesn't lapse in her recover again, otherwise her condition could become very serious." "How serious." Don asked, disregarding everything else the Doctor had just told him. "Well I would recommend that the surgeon remove one, if not both of the ovaries so as not to take the risk of an infection spreading. As I said, Nina did heal excellently and I think it would be unlikely that could happen. But she's given her consent and I feel it best to continue with the surgery." "This surgery, it has side effects." Don assumed.
|
| |
cree: 26.08.2006 - mis a jour: 26.08.2006
"Yes. As a result it will be highly unlikely Nina will be able to naturally conceive a baby." Dr. Crane revealed to Don. "And you let her make this decision without consulting me?" Don asked as he raised his voice. "I only needed her consent and personally I didn't want to put her under anymore due stress by making her wait to talk to you before she made a decision." Don turned away from the doctor and let out a grunt of defeat. Processing all the information he had just received, Don turned back toward him. "This previous abortion, why did you tell me about it. Doesn't that breach your code or something?"
|
| |
cree: 26.08.2006 - mis a jour: 26.08.2006
"It would but Nina told me that you'd verify she's never been pregnant before." "But these tests, they don't have a very large margin of error do they?" Don asked, already knowing the answer. "Listen, I've been Nina's doctor for almost four years now, I was just as shocked as you were. I got a second opinion and she verified my findings. This abortion happened a long time ago, and as such perhaps Nina has subconsciously erased the event from her memory. She clearly had no knowledge of a previous pregnancy when I confronted her about it." Dr. Crane lowered his voice as Don instinctively leaned in. "But just because she forgot, doesn't mean everyone else has." Don slowly nodded and understood that now he knew of this information he was free to tell whoever he wanted, he had no code of confidentiality, other than that of mutual respect for Nina's privacy. But when it involved something as big as this, how could Nina not expect him to go looking for answers?

Chapter 4: "Coffee & Mind Games"
Dina had been with Cassandra for a few minutes and already her nerves were beginning to be tested. Deciding to at least try to make the best out of a bad situation, she invited Cassandra into the kitchen for some coffee. "Coffee! In your condition?" Cassandra had sneered. "There's nothing wrong with drinking coffee." Dina lied, knowing a few weeks ago she might as well have been allergic to the stuff. "Well I don't know what whack-job obstetrician you've been talking to but I know I wouldn't advise drinking it." Cassandra said in a matter-of-fact tone. "And who exactly would you advise on pregnancy, the lab rats?"
|
| |

Dina poked fun at Cassandra's job as Cassandra scowled and reluctantly grabbed the other cup and sat opposite Dina. If she wants to play games, Cassandra thought to herself, then let the games begin. "I just thought you might want some friendly advice." Friendly advice, Dina thought, from Cassandra? That would happen the same day pigs flew over Pleasantview. "Given that this is what you intend to do with your life." Cassandra continued.
|
| |
cree: 26.08.2006 - mis a jour: 26.08.2006
"And what exactly is that supposed to mean?" Dina asked. "Well, it's just that I assumed you intended to be a full-time mother. I don't recall you giving up a job to have this baby." "No, I didn't. But that doesn't mean I'm going to become a full-time mother. To be honest I don't think me and Mortimer plan on having any more kids." Dina shared.
|
| |
cree: 26.08.2006 - mis a jour: 26.08.2006
"And you've talked about this?" Cassandra asked. "Well no but..." "Then you obviously don't know my dad as well as you think you do. I remember growing up, constantly hearing about this big family that I was going to be a part of. Children and grandchildren, all meeting up in the holiday's. But as I got older I could tell that's not what my mum wanted. I was amazed when Alex came along, but by then I bet she'd already made up her mind to leave my dad." Dina was amazed, this was the longest she and Cassandra had ever spoke without an insult flying, and she was actually enjoying it. She had always wondered about Mortimer's first wife. Dina leaned in and waited for more. "So don't sit here and speak on behalf of my father regarding subjects you obviously don't know a thing about."
|
| |
cree: 26.08.2006 - mis a jour: 26.08.2006
Dina had jumped the gun, she should have seen that one coming. "Alright, I'll admit I've seen that gleam in his eyes whenever he talks about our baby. But who's to say he'll feel the same way one-year in when he's up at two AM in the morning nursing this one back off to sleep. I know you like to think he's this wonder-man but your dad isn't as young as he used to be, I think I know him well enough to say that me, Alex and the baby are all the family he needs. And why should he feel disappointed with that?" Dina said.
|
| |
cree: 26.08.2006 - mis a jour: 26.08.2006
"Forgive me if I'm wrong, but won't nursing the baby off to sleep be your job?" Cassandra remarked. "I wasn't implying that I wouldn't be doing most of it, but that on some nights..." "You'll be what, busy working at the... Oh wait." Cassandra vindictively suggested.

"Why do you think that just because I don't have a job it automatically means the only thing I'm good at is child-raising?" Dina demanded to know. "I don't think that. I have no idea how capable you are of raising a child, you might be terrible." Cassandra suggested with a devious grin. "How dare you." Dina slipped out as the atmosphere became very tense. Regaining her composure, Dina calmed down and reminded herself not to stoop to Cassandra's level. She had Mortimer, she had his child. Okay so it's a complete lie and your an adulteress bitch, Dina thought, but Cassandra doesn't know that. Why let her get the better of you, you can rise above this and come out victorious, she said to herself as if preparing for a battle. "I have no intentions of neglecting my duties as a mother. Rest assured that your future step-sibling will be my top priority for the rest of my life." Dina pledged as Cassandra rolled her eyes slightly and sipped at her coffee.

"When is Mortimer getting back?" She asked, changing the subject. "Anytime now I should expect. Though he might have stopped off to do some grocery shopping, he likes to make sure I don't go hungry when I have my midnight cravings." Dina smiled to herself. "How thoughtful of him." Cassandra said reluctantly. "Although I dare say it sounds like he's trying to make it up to you by pandering to your every pathetic whim. It's as if he's guilty of something." Dina raised her eyebrows, intrigued at what Cassandra was getting at.

"All this time away from home, are you sure he's not having an affair?" Cassandra casually suggested as Dina almost spat out her coffee.

"Are you insane?" Dina shot back, throwing her entire 'be nice to Cassandra' plan out of the window. "I invite you into my home and make an effort to try and have a civil conversation with you but instead of doing the same you can't seem to rest until I end up doing exactly what I'm doing now." Dina backtracked, feeling slightly embarrassed at her outburst.

"No. I do not think he is having an affair." Dina said to her coffee cup as she avoided eye-contact with Cassandra, feeling a slight twinge of guilt that Cassandra would accuse Mortimer of having an affair when she was the one who had been unfaithful.

Chapter Five: "New Things"
Alex had seen his new friend David Asher once more after their initial meeting, and they both had expressed a desire to see each other again. Alex wasn't sure if his friendship was turning into something more but he sometimes got embarrassed at how glaringly obvious he was around David. Forever making an excuse to playfully touch him or gaze into his eyes for longer than a friend should (Alex had become quite the champion at the 'no-blinking' game). Knowing that Alex had a friend like David had given him back the confidence he so desperately needed. He'd gone back to school after meeting him with a new outlook, he completely blanked Meadow and her clique when they whispered and called him names behind his back. Then things really looked up when most of his old friends forgave him for the temporary insanity that was Meadow, though most of that was thanks to Lilith.

As was his new look. Alex felt lucky to have a friend like Lilith, who completely accepted him and didn't complain when he talked for hours on end about David. Lilith had helped him find a look that bordered on goth whilst still looking approachable, and Alex definitely wanted to be approachable! "I swear, the workers at that place are so dumb I'm sure I saw one of them ask their supervisor which side of the bread they should butter!" David commented on the service at the cafe he and Alex had gone to. "Now you know why I only ordered a coffee." Alex explained.

"So wise one, what fine establishment would you recommend me and my mum go to tonight? She's taking me there to meet her new boyfriend, though I doubt he'll last. For some reason things never seem to work out after they meet me. My mum says it's her fault, breaking up with them in fear that they won't understand our relationship." David asked as the two approached Alex's house. "Our relationship?" Alex asked in a nervous high-pitched voice. "Yeah, me and my mum. We're really close and I think sometimes she feels scared of letting anyone get closer to her heart than me for fear of them breaking it." "Is that what happened with your dad?" Alex asked. "No, they always loved each other. I'm sure they still do but my mum says that they can't ever be together again." David revealed.

"Don't you ever wonder why?" Alex asked again, so interested in finding out about David's life. "Yeah, but I see him often enough and we're cool. The rest my mum's shielded me from and I'm thankful for that. She says she doesn't want me worrying anymore than a teenager should." "Do you worry a lot?" Alex continued. "Are you always this inquisitive?" David asked back, making Alex blush. "I'm kidding! Of course I have worries, just like everyone else. Are you telling me you don't?" "Not at all, I'm barely able to walk out of the door on a morning without a million things going round in my head." Alex motioned with his hands all the thoughts he had going on inside his head as David laughed.

"Aw, poor Alex's head." David said as he put his hand up to rub Alex's head. Alex coyly smiled as David gently caressed Alex's hair. "You better be careful, stress causes you hair to fall out. And I like you with long hair." David complimented Alex as he continued to hold stroke Alex's hair between his fingers. Alex hadn't felt like this since that magical moment he had been in Dirk Dreamer's arms. But all that was a misunderstanding he paid dearly for, something that made Alex weary to try what he tried on Dirk. But he felt an invisible coil drawing him and David closer, it was so tempting. Just an inch closer and he'd be touching lips with David...

Alex was startled as their maid's van pulled up and beeped from across the street. Quickly, he pulled David's hand away from his face. When Alex turned around he realised their maid wasn't stopping, instead he had just recognised Alex and called his attention as a friendly gesture. Unfortunately it had done more harm than good.

"Gee, I'm sorry. I don't know where my head was. I better be off." David quickly apologised and began briskly walking away. And Alex knew assuming something like that could blow a relatively normal situation way out of proportion.

Dina was thankful to be rescued from her conversation with Cassandra by the phone. "Hey." Don called out, in a very depressed manner. "Hi! Don, is everything okay? Nina, is she...?" Dina asked with concern. "Doing fine, she just... Well, I'm having a little trouble understanding what's happened but from what I've been told I know she'll be out by tomorrow if you want to come round and visit her." Don replied.

"We talked about this. I really don't think she wants to see me, Don" Dina suggested, being reminded of her and Nina's fall out. "Well maybe she's got other things on her mind now. I think she'd like to see you, I know I would." Don said with a tone of resentment. "Why? What's wrong Don? You haven't told me what's happened yet. Is it something bad?" Dina rushed out all at once. "The doctor said that she hadn't healed as well as she should... because of something." "Something? Don, I'm on the phone, this is no time to play 'guess my facial expression'" Dina said sarcastically. "He said she's been pregnant before."

"Before, what do you mean before? Before you?" Dina asked with amazement. "Way before me. Nina doesn't remember anything about it, but her doctor assured me that their tests don't lie. It says she had an abortion." Don informed Dina as she clutched on to the receiver and held it close to her ear. "Don, how could she have had an abortion and not remember. I mean, don't you think I would have noticed?" Dina said quietly to stop Cassandra from listening in. "That's why I phoned. You don't remember anything odd about Nina when she was around sixteen or so, do you?" "No. Not even Don, no way would she have gotten herself pregnant. I don't know what this doctor's playing at but he's way off the mark." Dina replied. "He says this surgery Nina's having, it's going to make it near impossible for her to ever get pregnant again. I really don't know how to handle this Dina. I could do with a friend right now." Don said with sorrow in his voice, reaching out to Dina.

"You know what? I'll see if I can make it down." "No, she probably will be drowsy after her surgery, just make an effort to see her when she gets out." Don suggested. "Sure, and I'll try to think but... I really think he's got his wires crossed Don. Nina was the not the kind of girl to go fooling around with boys." Dina added. "I know that. Ugh, I just don't know what to think right now." Don said as he hung up without saying goodbye. Dina was amazed, she knew herself that doctor's almost never got their information wrong. But she was sure that if it was as far back as Don suggested then there was no way Nina could have even had the opportunity to get pregnant. As far as Dina was aware, Nina didn't even have a boyfriend. And back then they used to tell each other everything, at least Dina thought they did.

Chapter Six: "What The Eyes Can't See"
"I'm the one who should be apologising. You go and make this incredibly sweet gesture and I repay it by pulling away. All because of what?" Alex said as he looked towards the maid's van driving off and round the corner. "I was just saying, you look cool. It's no big deal, but I really do have to go." David said as he went to leave. Alex felt him slipping away once again until he bottled up all his fears and reached for David's hand like he had done when they first they met. As he grabbed it, David turned around and Alex made sure he knew that David was the only thing on his mind now. "When you said that, it was a big deal. Because I think you're amazing and I love having you as my friend." Alex confessed. Slowly David pulled away from Alex. Alex sighed as he realised he'd made a fool of himself once again. He watched David bring his hands up to his face and hide behind them to laugh, making Alex feel worse.

When he brought them back down David smiled & looked at Alex. "You're such a puzzle, Alex. No wonder I couldn't figure you out." David said as Alex looked away. "I'm sorry I wasn't more obvious." Alex said dejectedly. "Alex, I'm not insulting you. I'm saying I wish you'd have just told me you had feelings for me too." Alex opened his eyes wide & smiled back at David. "Too?" He asked, not quite believing what he was hearing. "I guess I wasn't very clear either, though I was getting there. Shame my timing sucked." David confessed. "No it was perfect, I just didn't know..." Alex trailed off. "Me neither! I was forever trying to drop hints, hoping you'd just blurt it out so I could tell you." David laughed. "Well can you promise me something? Next time you want to drop a hint can you attach it to a bomb and aim it more toward my cranial area!" Alex joked. "As long as you promise not to get so worked up about what everyone else is thinking. That way I won't have to worry about you chickening out right before I..."

"Before you what?" Alex asked, taking David's hand once again and pulling their bodies close. Alex was so focused on David he didn't hear Dina open the door and stumble out, quickly hiding behind it and peeking out. Dina had gone to see if Alex was home after being sure she heard his voice when she was on the phone to Don. Thank god she hadn't asked Cassandra to come with her, she couldn't believe Alex was being so obvious. She'd always known about Alex's confused past, with Don letting slip that Alex had come to him to ask whether it was normal to have feelings for other boys. She just always assumed it had been a phase, especially since a few weeks after that happened he was going steady with Meadow. As far as she and everyone else was aware they were still together. But Dina began to realise Meadow hadn't been over to see Alex for more than a month. She pondered what had made Alex break up with her, especially considering his new friend had only just moved into the neighbourhood.

With so many questions going on in her mind she didn't notice Cassandra walking toward her until she was almost outside, quickly she blocked her path and made an excuse to talk with her. "Why do you want to see Alex so badly?" Dina asked, wondering if Cassandra knew more than she did about Alex's sudden change. "Do I need a reason to see my own brother? Is he back yet?" She asked demandingly. "No, I don't think so." Dina said right as Alex let out a very loud and very curious sounding laugh. "Well I think you're wrong, as usual." Cassandra said as she barged past Dina. Dina prayed that what she heard hadn't been the start of something Alex would regret other people seeing.

"What am I doing here? What are you doing there?" Cassandra shot back as she opened her mouth wide. "Where on earth did you get that shocking outfit?" She asked with concern as Alex breathed a sigh of relief and answered her. "It came out of the closet." Alex replied as David covered his mouth to stop from bursting out loud with laughter. Alex nudged his friend hard in the shin with his foot as he tried to coax Cassandra away from David, but it was too late. "And who is this? Is he responsible for your new look?" Cassandra enquired as David knowingly smiled and looked at Alex.

"Oh no, he's just a friend." Alex lied as David's smile quickly faded. He didn't expect Alex to link arms and declare him his boyfriend in front of his family but he had hoped Alex would acknowledge him as more than 'just a friend'.

"A friend who should be getting back home." David said as he quickly walked off, feeling very hurt and confused indeed. He had just opened up to Alex more than he'd ever opened up to anyone. He knew finding someone who understood him wasn't going to be so easy. Perhaps Alex won't be the one, he thought to himself.

As if reading David's mind, Alex scolded himself for casually brushing David off as just a friend. But he just got so nervous in front of Cassandra he couldn't think of what to say. Looking back, he realised anything would have been better than calling David 'just a friend'. Now, he was so much more than that. Alex prayed he hadn't just ruined the best friendship he'd ever made.

Epilogue: "Signs"
With her mind on Nina and Don and now Alex, Dina felt herself getting queasy again. Before she had the chance to go and lay down and leave Cassandra to talk with Alex the phone rang again. "Hello!" Dina answered as she tried to listen over the booming sound of Cassandra. She sounded mad, Dina thought and wondered if maybe Alex had told her what he was up to all those times he was out with his 'friends'.

Dina was speechless, she couldn't think of what to say. "I'll be right there." She finally managed to say as she replaced the receiver and paused for a few moments to catch her breath. Her posture had caught the attention of Alex and Cassandra as Alex asked if she needed to sit down. "No, I'm fine. That was roadside maintenance on the phone. They said they've found Mortimer's car."

Everything was alright now, she thought. Nina felt as if their problem's were finally coming to an end.

"I'll let you do a lot more than that if you promise to take these decorations down tomorrow." Nina bargained as Don jumped up and almost took Nina on the kitchen worktop right then. "Deal!" Chapter Two: "Not Quite The Mother"

Pressing the digits, she tensed up as she heard a panicked Don on the other end.

cree: 26.08.2006 mis a jour: 26.08.2006

"Why has she had to wait so long, what's wrong with her?" Don asked, eager to know the results of Nina's tests she had earlier on.
|
 |
cree: 26.08.2006 mis a jour: 26.08.2006
"Nina hadn't quite healed fully from the procedure she underwent last month, this attributed to some internal bleeding and that's why we're going in there now to fix her up. Now this is usual with a small percentage of women, but due to her circumstances I must say if I knew earlier I would have most definitely kept Nina in longer." "What circumstances? You said yourself when she left that she'd recovered excellently." Don argued. "Yes that was the case then, but that was before I found out that Nina has had a previous abortion."
|
 |
cree: 26.08.2006 mis a jour: 26.08.2006
Don stared into Dr. Crane's eyes as he spoke. He wasn't the type of man that would lie, but surely he must have been wrong. "Nina's never had an abortion before." "Well that's what she said too but the results don't lie Mr. Lothario, Nina's test results showed signs of a previous abortion, and a sloppy one at that. If I'd known this before hand, perhaps something could have been done to counter the effects of the procedure to remove..." Dr. Crane stopped his sentence early, knowing that Don was smart enough to understand where he was going.
|
 |
cree: 26.08.2006 mis a jour: 26.08.2006
"All I can do now is make sure Nina doesn't lapse in her recover again, otherwise her condition could become very serious." "How serious." Don asked, disregarding everything else the Doctor had just told him. "Well I would recommend that the surgeon remove one, if not both of the ovaries so as not to take the risk of an infection spreading. As I said, Nina did heal excellently and I think it would be unlikely that could happen. But she's given her consent and I feel it best to continue with the surgery." "This surgery, it has side effects." Don assumed.
|
 |
cree: 26.08.2006 mis a jour: 26.08.2006
Doesn't that breach your code or something?"
|
 |
cree: 26.08.2006 mis a jour: 26.08.2006
