PART FOUR by ThomasMcNab Prologue: "Redux" Chapter One: "Unrequited" Chapter Two: "One Son" Chapter Three: "End Game" Chapter Four: "Three of a Kind" Chapter Five: "Revelations" Epilogue: "The End"
Previously on 'The Caliente Affairs', Alex and David Asher both confessed their true feelings for one another, but before anything happened Cassandra surprised Alex by turning up at his house. Alex had to brush David off as nothing more than a friend, leaving David feeling hurt & Alex wondering if his relationship was over before it had even begun. Nina was rushed back into hospital & needed another operation. It would leave Nina with a low chance of ever getting pregnant again. Even more disturbing was when the doctor found evidence of a previous abortion. Nina assured the doctor she had never been pregnant before but when Don found out he had doubts & phoned Dina. Dina didn't believe the doctor's but before she could give it much thought she received another call informing her Mortimer had been in a car crash.

Prologue: "Redux"
Alex couldn't believe he had considered telling Cassandra about his recent changes after seeing how she had reacted to a mere makeover. "Why are you wearing make-up?" She queried as she began to rub at Alex's cheeks with her fingers.

"Quit it! It's not a big deal, I'm still the same Alex." Except I'm gay, Alex yelled in his head. Sometimes he wished it was that easy, if Cassandra only knew how important that single moment with David had just been then. Maybe, in a prefect world, she'd be telling him to run and catch up with David instead of lecturing him about other things. "I know, but surely living here has had an adverse effect on your behaviour." Cassandra said. "My behaviour? Excuse me, Dr. Cassandra! I didn't know I was in session." Alex laughed. "I'm serious. Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea for you to talk to someone other than those crazy friends of yours." Cassandra advised. "Are you suggesting I need psychiatric help just because I decided to put on a little eye-liner?" "You're a boy, Alex." Cassandra retaliated. "Yeah well, you're a... Poop-head!" Alex stuttered as he tried to think of a come back.

"Oh, that's real mature! What are we, seventeen and eight again?" Cassandra asked, comparing them to bickering children. "No. I had hoped we were old enough to respect each other as human beings, but instead you're just trying to control me like you always do." Alex confessed. "Control you! What is up with you?" Cassandra said defensively. "I just don't get it, you came over here to lecture me about my clothes?" "I came over to ask if you wanted to spend the night. Darren and Dirk are over and I wanted us all to spend some time together." Cassandra admitted. "Right! And Dirk agreed to this did he?" Alex asked, gathering that Cassandra wouldn't even be asking if Dirk knew about it, as he would never say yes after what Alex pulled on him last year. "I'm sure he will. You know I don't know what it is that's come between you two but I wish you would just sort it out."

"Alright! I'll come over, it doesn't look like I'm going to be doing anything tomorrow anyway." Alex replied dejectedly knowing only a few moments ago he was brimming with excitement over what he and David were going to do now they had both gotten their feelings out in the open. "Well if you had plans with Meadow you could always invite her over too." "Meadow? Cassandra, I don't date Meadow anymore." "What! Since when?" Cassandra asked in shock. "We broke up before Christmas." "Well! No wonder you've done this to yourself, it's obviously a cry for help. And that explains why you were so quiet when you came over to see me." Cassandra said. "What? Do you need help?" Alex said, trying to get Cassandra off the subject of his visit before Christmas, the visit in which he had almost told her he was gay. "You thought I'd be disappointed, I understand now." "Not you! Dina, do you need to sit down?" Alex asked Dina. "No, I'm fine. That was roadside maintenance on the phone. They said they've found Mortimer's car."

"What? What's the matter?" Cassandra asked frantically as she stared at the phone, as if willing it to answer her. "He's crashed it." Dina replied slowly. "No!" Cassandra cried out as she pulled her hands close to her heart, panicking that her father may be dead. "He was there and they say he's unhurt." Dina said. Seeing the faces of Cassandra and Alex she realised she should have caught her breath earlier and said everything in one go to avoid them panicking. Then again, she knew all the facts herself and even she felt her heart beating ten-to-the-dozen.

"Oh, thank god. Well what happened?" Cassandra asked. "Apparently another driver cut him up as he was heading back. He came off the road and drove into a tree. The car's waiting to be towed but Mortimer's refusing an ambulance. He says he wants me to come pick him up." "You! But how did he expect you to get down there when he's just crashed the car? Why didn't he phone me instead?" Cassandra began, almost talking to herself. Dina rolled her eyes and suppressed the urge to grab Cassandra and shake her. "Would you focus on what's really important here for a second. We can call for a cab and go down there together." Dina argued and was about to call for a taxi until Cassandra stopped her.

"No. I'm going to call Darren, he can come by and pick us up." Cassandra said as she opened her hand for Dina to give her the receiver. "Alright, we'll do it your way." Dina backed down and handed it over. She didn't care Cassandra was getting her way she just wanted to be by Mortimer's side. She didn't know what to expect. He didn't want an ambulance so he couldn't be too injured, unless he was simply putting on a front. She knew how sensitive Mortimer got about his age and health and wouldn't want to appear weak. If he was being stubborn and had really hurt himself she would never forgive him for not getting medical attention. As Cassandra dialed home she realised how fortunate it was she had been here and not at home, otherwise she might not have heard the news until... no, not until, Cassandra thought. Hearing Darren's voice on the other end of the line made Cassandra feel safe. She knew that whatever happened in her life, as long as she had Darren by her side there was no need to worry.

Chapter One: "Unrequited"
Sixteen-hours earlier, Cassandra hadn't a care in world. She let out a satisfied moan and held the hand of her fiance. For a few nights now, Darren and Dirk had been living in the Goth house with Cassandra. With Dirk finally open to accepting their relationship and the three of them under one roof Cassandra should have been ecstatic.

But as she looked into Darren's eyes she felt an emptiness inside, a piece of her life was missing and she wanted it back with her. As Darren went into the bathroom, Cassandra shuffled around and pulled back the covers. She was slightly hot after having woohoo with Darren... but not that hot, she thought as she reached down to the floor for her underwear. She also didn't feel comfortable being in the all-together with Dirk sleeping only a few feet away from her in Alex's old bedroom. She knew from experience that Dirk was a boy who didn't knock before he entered a room. At his house he may have felt like he didn't need to but here Cassandra couldn't recall the amount of times he kept walking in on her when she was in the bedroom or bathroom. Luckily, Dirk hadn't been given a show of anything he shouldn't see but sometimes, as ridiculous as it sounded in her head, she felt as if he was trying to catch her out on purpose.

As Darren returned in his sweater Cassandra laughed. "You're cold?" "I was until about three seconds ago! You can talk. Have you just put your underwear back on so I can have fun taking it off you again?" "Again!" Cassandra repeated in surprise. As Darren took off his sweater and laid next to Cassandra she couldn't feel the usual anticipation she felt when she was about to be with Darren.

"Did you get even more beautiful since I was gone?" Darren said as Cassandra couldn't help but roll her eyes and groan at the cheesiness of Darren's line. Coughing, he relaxed back and Cassandra held out her hand. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to laugh at you. I'm just... would you be hurt if I said I wasn't in the mood?" "Not really."

"I might be in a moment, I just need to ask you something first." "Go ahead." Darren stated. "It's just something that's been on my mind and I wouldn't feel right trying to do it whilst I'm thinking about something else."

"Cass, what is it?" Darren said, stopping Cassandra from ranting. "I want to have Alex over. Not just for dinner, but for a whole day. I keep being reminded of him coming over before Christmas and feeling left out when I said I was eating with you and Dirk. If I went over and gave him a planned invitation then he wouldn't feel out of place." Cassandra said. "You don't have to ask me if it's okay to have your brother over, this is your house. You could throw a party if you wanted." Darren joked. "No. I just want you, me, Alex... and Dirk." Cassandra added with a pause, knowing how awkward that dinner table was going to be if they managed to get Dirk to sit with Alex. "Oh, I see." Darren realised. "You know what? Forget it. I..." Cassandra started as Darren interrupted. "Cass, go over to see him tomorrow. Tell him to pack a bag and be here at four PM."

"Really! You mean it?" Cassandra wanted reassurance. "And don't ever ask me again." Darren said as he sat forward and looked directly at Cassandra.

"You shouldn't feel like you have to ask. I'll tell Dirk tomorrow and he doesn't have a choice about liking it." Darren asserted. "I don't want it to be that way though." Cassandra sighed with disappointment. "Well until one of them tells us why they fell out then we're going to have to take charge and show them that mature people don't solve problems by simply avoiding them." Darren stated.

"Ooh, I love it when you get all philosophical and wise." Cassandra wooed as she took Darren's hand. "Do you want me to tell you about the time I lectured my art class when the professor was running late? And I..." "Ooh, I love it when a man knows when to be quiet because his girlfriend is trying to turn him on." Cassandra joked as she stopped Darren from talking with her lips.

Chapter Two: "One Son"
At the bottom of the stairs, Darren had been waiting to corner Dirk and talk to him about Alex coming over for the night and, if he was lucky, find out what all their animosity was about. "Dirk, can I have a word with you?" Darren said as Dirk stopped in his tracks and rolled his eyes.

There were only three reasons a father would ever purposefully hunt down their son, Dirk knew. Either he had done something wrong, his dad had done something wrong or someone had died. Dirk just wanted to go watch TV so he prayed it was the latter of these... no-one important though, some third-cousin-twice-removed would constitute for a small enough moment of grief before Dirk could get back to more important things. "Cassandra's inviting company for dinner tonight." Darren said. "Cool." Dirk said, taking one step back. "Will you be here?" Darren checked. "Sure." Dirk said, taking another. "It's Alex." Darren finally added. "No, I have plans." Dirk said with an annoyed look. "Dirk!" Darren said in a harsh tone. "No dad. You don't need me here." "I would like... no. I demand that you attend tonight." Darren put his foot down. "I have to finish a project for school with Orlando, we're partners in... class." Dirk lied.

"No you're not going out. We're all staying here and tonight Alex is coming over for dinner and then staying over and you two are going to get along." Darren laid down his rules. "No! I could never get along with him. And you better not make us sleep in the same room otherwise I'll be walking home to go to sleep." Dirk said, trying to leave as he'd had enough of talking about it. Darren stopped him however. "Why? What could Alex have done that was so heinous you have to act like this." Darren pleaded with Dirk. "You wouldn't understand." Dirk exclaimed as Darren blocked him from leaving again.

"How am I supposed to understand when you won't tell me what the problem is?" Darren asked, making Dirk tense up. I'm not getting out of this... unless, Dirk began to think. Slowly he realised that he had to tell his dad what had happened that Thanksgiving night. If not to get him out of seeing Alex again, to at least finally get it off his own conscience. "There's something you don't know about Alex." Dirk started as he bit his bottom lip. On the edge of admitting what had happened made Dirk realise he had to face up to his own feelings about that night, and the insecurities he now had about his own sexuality. But how on earth could he tell his dad that? Before Dirk got the chance to talk a phone ring came from Cassandra's kitchen and Darren held up his hand to stop his son. Breathing a sigh of relief, Dirk tried to plan out what he was going say. He paused when he heard his dad in the other room sounding panicked.

"That was Cassandra, I have to go pick her up. Mortimer's been in a car crash." Darren explained as he went to set off. "Wait, is he okay?" Dirk asked with genuine concern. "Cassandra said he's fine but he needs picking up as the car's being towed." Darren grabbed his car keys from the kitchen counter and added he'd be back soon with Cassandra and Alex.

"No, Dad. You can't." Dirk protested. "Dirk, put your little vendetta aside and think about someone other than yourself for once in your life." Darren uttered as Dirk grew angry. One moment his dad wanted him talk and the next he was abandoning him. "I am thinking about you, you're the whole reason I haven't told anyone..." Dirk began to explain but was interrupted by an impatient Darren. "Dirk, I don't have time."

"Mortimer's in serious trouble." Darren said, pointing outside as if to show the intensity of the situation. "You just said he was fine. Can't you just wait?" "No." Darren said with force.
|
| |

"I'm sick of your excuses and whatever you come up with now, you know what I'd say? Get over it." Darren said as he left Dirk standing in the kitchen, feeling hurt that the one time he was actually going to tell the truth his dad chose 'them' over his own flesh and blood.
|

Watching his dad leave, Dirk held back his emotions and suppressed the admission of doubt he had just had in his mind. Dirk knew now he would never find the right moment to tell his dad, that some excuse or lie would appeal more than the hideous truth. For now, he would just have to let the subject rest.
|

No. He couldn't, Dirk thought to himself. This time he wasn't going to just let the matter rest. He needed reassurance that what he was feeling was nothing more than confusion. And with a whole house to himself, he knew exactly the person to call.

Chapter Three: "End Game"
As she watched the sun set, Nina sighed and decided she might as well go to sleep now. The surgery had gone off without a hitch, except for the fact that Nina was now left unable to conceive naturally. She knew her doctor would emphasise there was a chance but Nina refused to get her hopes up. She was done depending on chances, it was time she took charge of her life and started making some decisions of her own. And it seemed one of her decisions would be made before she got any sleep, she thought as Don cowardly walked into her room. "Sorry I'm late. I set my alarm but it didn't go off, stupid thing. How long have you been awake? Should you be standing?"

Don reached out to stroke Nina's hair. For one moment, she let herself slip back into her old weak ways. She let him hold her and she even closed her eyes when they kissed. But when they parted she understood what she had to do.

"I'm fine, I wish I could come home tonight. But maybe it's best I give you some privacy whilst you pack." Nina casually said as she pulled back the sheets on her bed. "I'm sorry?" Don asked in a confused tone.
|
| |
Created: 08.26.2006 - Updated: 08.26.2006
"Don, stop being sorry. Anyone would think I blame you, but I don't, it's not your fault. It's my fault, I'm the one to blame." Nina confessed. "Nina, don't say that. You shouldn't blame yourself, forget what the test results say." Don went to hold Nina again but she backed up and put her hands out to stop him. "You... Believe him, don't you?" Nina asked, referring to Dr. Crane and her previous abortion. Don's silence was all Nina needed for an answer. "You know, I don't have a clue about the logistics of science and technology. They can put a man on the moon and clone sheep but that doesn't mean they're right one-hundred percent of the time."
|

"I knew you'd believe them." Nina turned around and breathed slowly, she had gotten more worked up then she had intended. She hated to admit it but Don was right about one thing, perhaps she shouldn't be standing so soon after her surgery.
|
| |

Don went to answer Nina but stopped when he saw her bending over and clutching her stomach. As he got closer he heard Nina's deep breaths and reached out to help her.
|

"Don't touch me." Nina cried as she held up her hand. Don backed off and did as his girlfriend asked. "I know you've been through so much these past few weeks, but I'm only here to help you." Don edged forward slower this time as Nina turned around.
|
| |
Created: 08.26.2006 - Updated: 08.26.2006
He reached out and this time Nina let him hold her steady. Together they sat down on the bed as Don held Nina's hand. "I don't believe him Nina. I talked to Dina and she told me there was no way..." "You talked to Dina about this?" Nina asked as she pulled her hand out of Don's grasp. "How am I ever supposed to trust you when all that comes out of your mouth is crap." Nina said as Don sensed his being there was causing Nina more harm than good. "I'm sorry." "Oh stop it, Don. Stop being so damn sorry all the time. When are you gonna get it through your head that I don't care whether you are, in fact, the reason for all of my problems. And let's face it, Don; you'd have to go a pretty long way to convince me otherwise."
|
| |
Created: 08.26.2006 - Updated: 08.26.2006
Don stood up as he realised he should leave before Nina said something she regretted. "So what else have you've been talking to Dina about?" Nina said with a suggesting tone that made Don stop in his tracks. "If you're getting at what I think you're getting at then I'll just say it's alright. I'll let that one slide, if this is what it takes to make you feel better then say anything you want." "Oh there's only one more thing that needs saying." Nina said.
|
| |
Created: 08.26.2006 - Updated: 08.26.2006
"We're through. I'm done playing games with my life, Don. I want something more, something more than just this." Nina confessed as Don was left frozen on the spot.
|
| |
Created: 08.26.2006 - Updated: 08.26.2006
He couldn't show his true feelings in front of Nina, despite what she said she was dependant on him after what they had both gone through. "You?re in no condition to be making decisions like that. I know you think it's for the best now but trust me. Get a good nights rest and be ready for tomorrow morning, I'll be here to pick you up." Don said as he quickly rushed out of the room, close to tears. Dina sighed, but rather than feeling sad she finally felt calm. She expected that tonight she would get the best night's sleep she'd had since this whole saga began.

Chapter Four: "Three of a Kind"
A few hours ago, Mortimer wondered if he would ever see their faces again. But now he felt crowded by Dina and Cassandra, who were arguing over who was to make Mortimer something to eat. "Cassandra! I don't understand why you feel that Dina can't cope, she's pregnant not disabled."
|
| |
Created: 08.26.2006 - Updated: 08.26.2006
"Oh! Well forgive me for wanting to spend some time with my father who just almost died." Cassandra retaliated as her bottom lip quivered and Mortimer rolled his eyes. "I did not almost die, I simply was cut up. It could have happened to anyone." "Well it wouldn't have happened if you hadn't had all that extra weight in the back of the car." Cassandra shot at Dina with a look of resentment. "Don't point the blame at me again. I told you I asked for nothing, Mortimer's the one who's been buying everything for the nursery." "And rightly so. I don't want our child to be deprived and kept in a room that's void of stimuli." Mortimer said, trying to take the blame off of his wife. "Well then, as long as you're alright." "I am." Mortimer said with a smile. "Alright. Alex, are you coming?" Cassandra asked.
|
| |

"Oh, no. I didn't want to leave..." Alex mumbled as he sat next to his father. Whilst Cassandra and Dina had been arguing, Alex had been privately battling with his own conscience. After hearing how close his dad had gotten to dying, despite how much he played it down, Alex couldn't forgive himself for treating David like he did. After today's events, all he felt like doing was rushing over to David's house to apologise so they could be in each others arms again. "But I thought you agreed." Cassandra said with confusion. "Well that was before dad... I just want to be around." "It's quite alright Alexander, I'm fine now." Mortimer said as he reached over to hold his son's hand, feeling that a sign of affection would reassure him. "I just, I want to stay." Alex demanded. "Maybe it would be best Alex stay over next Friday for a few nights." Mortimer negotiated. "Fine. I'll phone you when I get home." Cassandra sighed as she headed out of the bedroom. "Alright. Please give my thanks to Darren once again."

But as she left with Darren in his car she didn't tell him. In fact she didn't speak a word. As the sun set and they got home Darren cornered his fiance before they went inside. "He'll come around, eventually." Darren offered, referring to Alex. "It's not just Alex, it's my whole family. I feel like we're falling apart. There's nothing to connect us anymore." Cassandra glumly said. "There's the wedding to look forward to. Everyone will be at that." "Oh, I'm surprised you even remembered we hadn't had one." Cassandra half-heartedly shot at Darren as she attempted to go inside but instead Darren reached for her hand and pulled her towards his body. Caressing her cheek he kissed her deeply and lingered for as long as she let him. When they finally parted, he looked into Cassandra's eyes and saw something he had neglected to notice before.

"This evening, it wasn't about bringing Dirk and Alex together. It was about you, you wanted to come home to a family again." Darren realised. Cassandra looked off to the side and breathed deeply as she looked back at Darren. "Is it so wrong of me? I just feel so protective over Alexander." "There's nothing wrong with that. But Alex isn't your son he's your brother so start treating him that way. You should take him out for the day and have some fun. Buy him some new clothes, show him that you're okay with his new look. I hear these kids like metal-studded belts." Darren offered. Cassandra focused her eyes and frowned. "These kids, what's that supposed to mean? You can't just fit Alexander into a group like a missing puzzle-piece." Cassandra stated defensively. "That's not what I meant." Darren tried to backtrack.

"No you did, because I thought it too. I'm afraid that if I don't see him regularly I'll begin to forget about all those small things that make up Alexander. Living here he had so many outlets to support his thirst for knowledge and guidance. I just fear that with my father and Dina so focused on a new arrival, he'll feel left out and look to someone else for guidance. And if I'm not there, which I clearly haven't been, he'll end up falling in with the wrong crowd." Cassandra admitted, almost close to tears. "Come on, you've had a very long and emotional day. Go inside," Darren said as they walked into the house, "put your feet up. I'll run you a bath and..." "What about Dinner? Dirk..." Cassandra said as she went into the kitchen. "I'll take care of Dirk. And don't feel like you're letting him down either. These past months you've really made an impression on him." Darren said as he guided her out and into the living room.

Cassandra yelped when she saw what was in front of her. Darren stood behind her, his mouth wide and unable to say anything. Dirk pulled apart from his friend when he noticed Cassandra and his dad. Time had gotten away from him, he hadn't realised it had gotten dark. He was so caught up in the moment of passion that he hadn't even bothered to move off the dining room table. Though seeing his dad and, even better, seeing the face on Cassandra, a part of him felt pleased he was caught.

When Holly had come over it wasn't long before all his old feelings had returned and he passionately embraced her like she had done to him last Halloween. Though this time, he wanted to show her that nothing would come between them. Dirk had forgotten just how good it felt to lose himself in the heat of the moment. His confusion was long gone now, but that wasn't going to stop him from taking it further.

Holly was just as eager, she'd lusted for Dirk ever since they first kissed. They hadn't been together since word had gotten round that Lilith Pleasant, Dirk's girlfriend who broke up with him when she found out he'd been cheating on her, wanted to beat her up and she made it a mission to avoid being seen with Dirk. But now everyone had clearly moved on, and so could she and Dirk. And what better way to signify their reunion then by giving herself to him completely. It was a shame that wasn't to be the case, Holly thought as she fumbled with her loosened clothes (and Dirk fumbled to hide his near-nakedness) and hopped off the table.

"What are you doing?" Shrieked Cassandra as Holly backed away from the 'scene of the crime'. "I better be going." "I think you'd better!" Cassandra agreed, her voice still as shrill and high-pitched as before. Holly didn't need showing out and Cassandra wasn't about to leave Darren to handle his son. Dirk had waved that right when he chose to do what he almost did under her roof and on her dining room table!

Dirk looked at Cassandra, half embarrassed and half pleased with himself. Though a part of him was one-hundred percent pleased, he realised as he coughed and spoke up for the first time. "Do you mind turning around whilst I get off the table." He asked Cassandra as she grimaced and retreated into the kitchen, leaving Darren to storm toward Dirk and forcibly move him off the table and upstairs into Alex's old bedroom, the room he stayed in. And if Darren got his way, the room he'd never be leaving ever again.

Chapter Five: "Revelations"
Darren finished dishing out Dirk's punishment as Dirk breathed a sigh, about the only thing he was allowed to do now. As soon as they had walked into the bedroom just twenty minutes ago it had been non-stop shouting. Dirk thought his dad might have understood, if only he could tell him everything that was going on in his life he was sure he would be pleased. But Darren seemed to be more angry that it had happened where it did, and that Dirk should be apologising to Cassandra and not him.

Cassandra had walked into the room about two minutes ago but hadn't said a word. When all was silent and Dirk let out his deep sigh Cassandra turned to Darren. "Can I have a word with Dirk?" She asked as Darren nodded and mentioned something about a bath as he left.

"Why, Dirk? Why do you keep doing this?" Cassandra asked with resentment in her voice. "Sorry if I disappointed you. I wasn't trying to pretend to be something I'm not, that's not my style." Dirk added, slyly referring to Alex. "I'm didn't mean why do you do this to me. I meant why do you do this to yourself?" Cassandra queried as Dirk paused with shame. He couldn't answer her. All the things he'd felt brimming up to the surface this afternoon were back and Dirk didn't know if he could keep a lid on them. Sure, he wanted desperately to get these anxieties off of his chest but he couldn't trust Cassandra, could he?

"I'm sorry." Dirk offered, a sense of meaning shocking not only Cassandra but himself. He figured he'd started, he may as well carry on. "I don't know why I do what I do. I just wish..." Dirk purposefully trailed off.

"You wish what?" Cassandra asked, desperately trying to reach out to Dirk and connect with him. "I wish you were my mother, then it wouldn't be so hard to talk to you." Dirk said as he looked at his feet. Cassandra put her hand on her heart and softened her voice, trying to get through to Dirk. "Please, Dirk. I love you, you can trust that whatever it is you want to tell me I won't betray you." Cassandra promised as Dirk looked up and saw in Cassandra's eyes a kindness that he wasn't ready to deal with yet. Clearing his throat, he fluffed his pillow and remembered something that just might come in handy. "I... have a problem." Dirk started as Cassandra smiled, thinking she had finally gotten through to Dirk.

"How am I going to give Holly her bra back?" Dirk said as he reached under his pillow and pulled out the item of underwear his friend had left behind. Cassandra's eyes widened and she was speechless. "I can't exactly walk up to her in school and just hand it back. Do you think I should keep it? I do kind of like having it, sort of like a souvenir." Dirk said as he held it out in front of him with a smile. "Just holding it makes me feel like I'm right back with her downstairs and lying on top of your table." Dirk slowly relived the moment as Cassandra looked on horrified for a moment before storming out of his bedroom. Dirk laughed under his breath and tossed the underwear to one side.

He couldn't stand anymore of miss goody-two-shoes trying to get on his side. He knew all he had to do to get Cassandra to leave was to embarrass her. Shouldn't he be the one feeling embarrassed though, Dirk thought to himself? Why was he toying with Cassandra like he just did? For a moment Dirk wondered if on some level he was trying to make Cassandra jealous. It sure seemed that way, Dirk thought to himself for a split second. Suddenly he realised he may have just won the battle of his confused sexuality, but now it seemed an even darker state of confusion was befalling him. Dirk panicked and looked around the room. Surely he could at least think it... He could never say it out loud but there was nothing wrong with thinking about it. Dirk gulped as he contemplated a chilling thought... could he have romantic feelings for Cassandra?

Epilogue: "The End"
Nina had let Don take her home, but their car journey was silent just as Nina had intended. Don tried many times to ignite a conversation but to no avail. As Nina walked in she was immediately greeted with a sense of frustration, she was back where it had all began. In front of her was where she lay unconscious whilst her baby died inside of her and behind her was the man she swore she wouldn't let step back into her house. But Nina was still weak from the surgery, and Don could tell. As she made her way to the kitchen Don rushed ahead and lead her by the hand.

With a harsh jerk her reflexes instantly kicked in and she pulled her hand away from him. "What?" Don only managed to say as he looked confused. "I don't get why all of a sudden you're..." "All of a sudden? I didn't just wake up from my surgery yesterday and think to myself, how can I screw up my life even more? This has been waiting to happen for a long time, Don. I've just been too afraid to admit it."

"Will you at least explain to me why? If you do that then I'll respect your wishes but don't just throw me out because you're mad at me." Don requested. "I'm not mad at you. I'm mad at myself for ever thinking things between us could change to be something else. Something away from all the lies, secrets and betrayal." "You wanna talk to me about secrets? Try you not telling me you were pregnant." "What?! You know I wanted to surprise you but you had to go and ruin it." "I'm not talking about our pregnancy." Don said as Nina took a step back, trying to calm herself down before she got too worked up and ended up slapping Don right in the face.

"Leave. Now." Dina uttered. Don paused for a second, surely thinking of something to say. But he knew whatever it was Nina wouldn't listen to him now. He walked towards the door but before he left he turned back round to Nina.

"I won't give up on us. Because, unlike you, I believe that what we have is exactly what every human being in this world is desperate to find. This was the real deal and you may be ready to throw in the towel but I'm not." "You don't really have a choice." "I do. I know that the second you come to your senses and realise that these problems in our relationship, whatever they are, are insignificant in comparison to our love for one and other I'll be right back here holding you in my arms." Don said. His delivery was romantic and his heart may have been true, Nina thought, but she knew that if she took him back now there would be no hope of a future together. Nina and Don needed to get through this, but separately.

Raising the gambit, Nina opened the door and looked into Don's eyes. "If you wait forever, then maybe there'll be a chance for us." The offer wasn't meaningless. Nina did live with hope deep, deep down that someday all of this would be behind them and that they'd be together again. But right now, all Nina could see in the future for her life with Don was a life of pain and regret. For the both of them, it was better if she called it a day now and finished their chapter before it finished her.

|
 |
Created: 08.26.2006 Updated: 08.26.2006
