"We are going to be late again!" Kylie shouted to her sister Emily. The two of them were still in the vicinity of their home on a cool crisp Monday morning. The girls were still tired out from Saturday night?s homecoming. Kylie stood near the doorway of Emily's bedroom watching her sister fix her hair in the same hairstyle she wore everyday. Kylie sighed inwardly then simply walked out of Emily?s bedroom, leaving her sister behind. "You're going to leave me?" Emily asked loud enough so her sister could hear from outside the doorway. Kylie simply ignored her and casually walked out the house, slamming the door behind her. 'That would explain why my Tampons are missing,' Emily said to herself.

She gathered up her things and headed out the door. She took short strides, taking her time on her lonely way to school. Finally she arrived at the school campus. Signs of relief greeted her as she walked up the flight of steps to see that people were still in hallways.
'Good thing, I'm not late,' she said to herself. She walked up to the doorway, placed her nervous hand on the door handle and pulled open the door. Immediately thoughts of the previous night flashed before her. Then his name echoed throughout her head, Ryan. It sent chills down her spine as his name repeated itself. She took a deep breath and continued walking down the hallway.

Emily scoped out each corner of the hallway while on her way to her locker. She heard groups of students discussing their homecoming experience amongst themselves. As she continued walking down the hallway, she noticed people begin to point and whisper something about her. Emily was puzzled and unable to comprehend the commotion that was going on. She simply shook her head and continued walking to her locker. Once she arrived at her locker she began entering in her locker combination. She turned the dial on the final digital then pressed up on the handle, opening the door. She unzipped her backpack, emptied it, and then sorted out the contents. Like a gunshot, a loud shrieking bang quickly approached her. She closed her eyes in response of the reaction.

Then Emily opened her eyes, to see her sister in front of her. "What the hell is your problem?" Emily shouted at her with fury. Kylie, however, didn't flinch to her anger. She simply kept the shocked and concerned expression on her face. "Ryan is suspended!" Kylie answered back. Emily's jaw quickly dropped to the floor. 'Should I be upset or happy? she thought to herself. "What happened?" she asked, somewhat excited to hear more. "Ryan and Jason got into a fight at the dance. Something about Jason entering Shanda in as homecoming queen, then Ryan told Shanda. Then Shanda got mad, then Jason got mad and then they just got into this huge brawl. Oh and Ryan kicked Jason in the crotch," Kylie explained to her sister, trying to hold in her laughter from the last line.

Emily lowered her head and stared down at the floor. She was quite confused at the whole situation and she didn't like how her sister quickly bombarded her with a skimmed down explanation. "That's it! I had enough, I'm breaking up with him for good," Emily announced with confidence. "Yeah right," Kylie said raising her eyebrows in disbelief. "No, I'm serious this time. I'm really going to cut him off." "And how would you do that? He's suspended. Don't tell me you?re going to do this by phone," Kylie asked, still unable to believe Emily was serious. "We will go to his house and I will tell him in person," Emily said looking quite serious this time. "His house! Are you serial? I'm bringing my camera," Kylie exclaimed with joy.

"No, we are just going to go to his house and knock on his front door," Emily said, bringing her sister's hopes down. "You're boring? Do you even know where he lives?" Kylie asked. "I was hoping Brendan could tell us that," Emily suggested. "I was thinking the same. But why can't we go inside his house at least? Or take a quick dip in his pool? Come on! When was the last time we went swimming?" Kylie pressured her sister. "Kylie really, I don?t want to stay there that long." Emily said disapprovingly. "Well I'm going to class now," Kylie shunned her sister. She slowly walked away, leaving her sister to be pointed at by the gossipers. Emily slammed her locker in anger and walked the short distance to her art class.

Emily walked into the classroom to see it rearranged differently. The usual aligning of the canvases was now switched to desks. She automatically assumed that they were not painting today; she walked over to where Shanda and May sat and took her seat. "What happened at the dance?" Emily immediately asked. "They got into a fight over me," Shanda boasted. "Emily, your boyfriend's a jerk. He ruined our almost perfect night," May complained. "Gah!" Emily blurted out. She placed both hands over her face with her elbows down on the table and then she stared down, analyzing the situation. 'Wow, what a nice way to start the week? Suddenly everyone hates me again,' she thought to herself.

"Emily, it's not your fault. Just dump his sorry ass and find a new man," Shanda suggested. "I'm going to?" she answered slowly. "So, I'm guessing you didn't win?" Emily hinted. "No, I got disqualified because I didn't enter. I don't really care anyways. It's just a title and besides I should be happy I got into the top five. As for Jason, they said he might get expelled for forgery," Shanda said in a disappointed tone. "They are going to expel Jason? That's crazy! So you aren't mad at him for entering you in?" Emily asked. "I was upset that he did that, but he really stood up for me and well?" "Aw?" May said with a huge grin on her face. "Yeah? My dad is a lawyer so if they expel Jason, I'll make sure he fights it," Shanda blushed.

"You really like him don't you?" Emily questioned Shanda. A large smile soon arose on Shanda's face showing her embarrassment. "I don't know. He's just really sweet. And I think it's cute that he hid emotions like that," Shanda answered. "Aw? you guys were so cute dancing together," May complimented her. "Yeah, until he ruined the night," Shanda added, her cheerful smile was now washed away with her lips compressed together forming a thin line.
The word he echoed through Emily's head. Her head throbbed with such frustration and anger. She wanted to say something to them; that she wanted to break up with him and not associate with him, but she couldn't. 'At least he won't be here for a while,' she reassured herself. She looked over and glanced at the empty seat aside her.

'That's where Ryan would have sat,' she said to herself looking at the void in front of her. 'Why would he be so stupid to get into a fight with his best friend? Why couldn't he just have solved things out normally?' she questioned herself one after another. 'Then again, he was really nice to me and I kinda treated him like dirt. No, don't think about that. You don't like him and you want to be done and over with him. Damn I'm really going to have to think about this,' Emily said to herself once again. She sighed inwardly taking a few minute to relapse from the situation. She then stared at the clock on the wall waiting for the bell to soon ring to start class.

The bell to end class rang and Emily casually exited the classroom. Steadily, she walked through the hallways scanning for her sister. At a she saw her sister talking to a fairly tanned girl. She had dark hair that reached her shoulders and wore a black skirt along with a thin black jacket.
"Kylie!" Emily called from behind. Kylie immediately rolled her eyes and continued to talk to the girl. "Hey don't ignore me!" Emily ordered. Kylie turned around and looked at her sister with annoyance. "Yeah what is it?" She answered lazily. "I'm calling it off. We aren't going to Ryan's house. I just can't tell him," Emily confessed. Kylie rolled her eyes and sighed deeply. "That doesn't mean we can't still go to his house. I don?t understand? What is it about this kid that you can't tell him the truth?" Kylie said raising her voice at her.

"I don't know," Emily answered slowly. "Well I guess we shouldn't go unless you have everything sorted out," Kylie suggested. "I guess so," Emily agreed. She then turned around and walked away from her sister and friend, unsure of where she really was going. "So that's your sister?" Kylie's friend asked. "Yeah Angela, that's my sister," Kylie said lazily. "Why was she so upset about it? From what you told me, she seems to be afraid of Ryan," asked Angela. "I don't know. I don't really get her sometimes," Kylie answered.

She continued talking to Angela until it was soon time for second period to start. Then she walked through the hallways and into her second period class, where she tossed her books on her desk and carefully took her seat. She moaned a little, and then opened up her notebook and started copying the notes from the board. Brendan glanced over at her noticing that her hair was styled differently. She also had a yellow headband in her hair, which he had never seen her wear before.
"Nice headband," Brendan teased her. "Nice lip ring. Is it fake?" Kylie mocked him. "Actually it is," he answered with a small laugh. "Bleh, why do you wear it then? It doesn't make you look hardcore or anything. So how was the dance? I heard Jason and Ryan got suspended," Kylie asked. "Yeah, the dance was alright until that happened. I'm going to see Jason after school today to give him his homework," Brendan answered.

"Emily's going to break up with Ryan," Kylie added. "She is? Well I guess that's no surprise. She left him alone at the dance. So how was your homecoming then?" He moved his chair closer towards Kylie attentively waiting for her response. "It was good other than the crappy music. Hey I thought you weren't supposed to talk to me?" Kylie asked, remembering the whole situation about May. "Yeah, it's pretty hard not to talk to you. Besides you are one of my closest friends ? that's a girl," Brendan answered back. The two of them both looked at each with smiles on both of their faces.

From several seats back, May stared at the two of them with envy. She had been listening to every word that was spoken from their mouths. Her body was tense with anger at her hatred towards Kylie. Both fists formed, which rested carefully onto the oak table.
"Grrr?" May grunted to herself. Ben looked at her a bit confused to why she was suddenly angry. "Is something wrong?" He asked politely. "Nothing is wrong, I just don't feel like doing math right now." May lied. "It's Kylie, isn't it?" Ben asked slowly. "Maybe," May said as she looked away from the two of them.

"Why are you so upset about it? They are only friends. They sit together at lunch," Ben pointed out. "He sits with her at lunch?" May's voice grew angrier. "Um?." Ben said nervously. Before even finishing, he quickly got up from his seat and walked over towards the pencil sharpener to sharpen his pencil. May flared her nostrils at him from a distance, and then sighed inwardly at Ben's shyness. 'Why is Brendan friends with her? I told him not to talk to her,' May thought to herself.

The day eventually dragged on, until it was the final hour of the day. Brendan walked into the classroom to see May with her chair tilted away from him. He walked over to his desk, placed his books onto the desk and took his seat. "May, is something wrong?' He asked kindly. "Oh nothing, just Tommy has been flirting with Angelica, even though Kimi told him no," May said sarcastically. "Huh what are you talking about? Who's Tommy and Angelica?" Brendan's puzzled face asked. "I told you not to talk to Kylie and you still do," May stated. "Sorry?" he said slowly. "And you sit with her at lunch?" May questioned. "Yeah, but we're only friends; nothing else," Brendan admitted. "Does she make you little sandwiches and put it in a brown paper bag with your name on it?" May exaggerated.

"No, but I don't understand. Why are you are so jealous of her?" Brendan asked. "I'm not jealous? It's just we don't really talk to each other. I mean, we will sit together on the bus and talk to each other in class." May explained. "Well, I live down the street. Maybe you could visit more often or call me. Who cares what your parents think. You can't let them control you forever," Brendan suggested. "I know, but I just can't keep lying to them. Eventually they are going to catch me and then I'll end up in serious trouble." May complained. "You're just going to have to keep taking those risks then," Brendan answered. May nodded her head and directed her chair towards the front center of the classroom.

Within minutes, the bell soon rang and everyone calmed down patiently awaiting the substitute teacher to walk in. From outside the classroom, footsteps could be heard drawing near the room. Finally, a familiar figure emerged through the doorway, who was none other than Ms. Beverly. She walked up towards the front of the classroom with a stack of papers in her hand. "Sorry I'm late, I had to make copies," she said as an excuse. She placed her stack of papers down, then walked up to the podium and cleared her throat. "I apologize for missing several days of school. My mother was terribly ill for the past few days and I had to stay with her at the hospital. She is recovering, but she is still sick. I'm sorry you all had to deal with those substitutes. Why don't we just take it easy today and review what you learned with the subs and then we will pick off where we left off tomorrow," Ms. Beverly announced to the class.

"That's so sad about her mother." May whispered to Shanda from across the aisle. "Yeah, I know I hope her mom's alright. I would hate to have that crazy lady again," Shanda whispered back. Brendan placed his elbow on his desk and rested his head firmly on his hand. There was something still puzzling him with Ms. Beverly's situation. He was aware of her little fling with Jason ? and coincidently, the next day after Jason didn't show up at the skate park, she was gone. Then when Jason is out for suspension, she reappears. He waited patiently until class was over. Once the bell rang, Brendan got out of his seat and approached Ms. Beverly in an orderly fashion.

"I'm sorry about your whole situation," Brendan said kindly, and then smiled at her. "Thanks, that's really kind of you. You better get going now, you wouldn't want to miss the bus," she said smoothly. "Actually I had a question to ask you," Brendan added. "Is it about any of the work you had with the sub?" She asked, trying to sound professional. "No, I was just wondering if you could quickly arrange Jason's homework assignments together. I'm going to his house after school to drop off his work from his teachers," Brendan requested. "That's nice of you, but I'm afraid I can't do that. Usually the administration will ask us to assign the work then they send him all his assignments at once," Ms. Beverly explained.
|
| |
cree: 26.11.2006 - mis a jour: 26.11.2006
"Hmm? I would hate to go to his house empty handed, can't you just assign work in advance and then when the administration asks, you can assign the same assignments?" Brendan insisted. "I'm sorry, but I don't even have the lesson plans done yet. I've just been so busy with my mother lately. Why don't you go to his house another day? This is really such short notice," Ms. Beverly refused. "Alright then, I'll just be on my way out. I'll just remember to tell Jason what you just told me," Brendan responded back. He gave a small wink then slowly walked out of the classroom in disgust of Ms. Beverly's behavior.

"Is this the place?" the cab driver asked. "Yeah, this is it," Brendan answered. The vehicle drove into the parking lot area of Jason's apartment complex. "$6.50," the driver requested. Brendan reluctantly reached for his wallet out of his back pocket and handed the cab driver the cost of fare. "Thanks," the cab driver replied. Brendan nodded his head and opened the passenger door and walked out of the cab. Brendan took a few steps towards the house, waiting for the cab to leave. "Damn $6.50 for a stupid ride here!" Brendan shouted as the cab driver took off. He doesn?t visit Jason much since his apartment was towards the outskirts of town. He would have taken Jason?s bus, but he didn't know which bus it was.

Brendan sighed one last time then walked closer to Jason's apartment. The outside environment looked fairly friendly. There were children running around in the grass, a woman walking her dog and a group of people working on their car. Brendan continued walking towards the sidewalk, and then up the short flight of steps to the door. He glanced over at the wall and saw a set of doorbells along with several last names corresponding to their residencies. Brendan looked over for Miller, Jason's last name. At last he found it and pressed the doorbell, ringing at Jason's apartment. Brendan carefully waited until he saw Jason appear in the doorway.

Jason stood at the foot of the doorway. He smiled to see Brendan at the door and opened the door for him. Brendan gave him an odd stare when he saw Jason wearing his pajamas. The two of them quietly walked upstairs to Jason's apartment room, with Jason closing the door behind him. "Thanks for coming over," Jason said kindly. "I just wanted to know what's going on. There are so many rumors spreading around at school," Brendan stated. "What are they saying?" Jason asked curiously. "Nothing much really," Brendan answered. "You just said they?re rumors going around," Jason questioned a bit confused.

"What happened that one night, when you didn't show up at the skate park?" Brendan immediately asked. Jason's eyes widen as he heard the question brought about. "Nothing, my mom made me stay home," Jason lied. "Yeah right, and then explain why Ms. Beverly disappeared the day afterwards?" Brendan asked again. "I don't know, the sub said her mom was sick," Jason answered. Sweat was quickly forming all over his body as he became bombarded with questions. He didn't want to tell Brendan the truth, he was afraid of what could possibly happen once everyone knew. "Jason, just tell me what happened. I won't tell anyone. Come on!" Brendan pressured him. "Enough! I don't want to talk about it and you better not be going around telling everyone," Jason said with anger in his eyes.
|

"Sorry?" Brendan said slowly. "Don't tell me you came all the way here to ask me that?" Jason asked rudely. "Ms. Beverly came back today," Brendan said slowly once again. He turned around from Jason and walked over to the couch and sat down. "What the hell!" Jason shouted out loud. Jason walked over to the couch and sat down speechless of what to even say. "Maybe I should just go," Brendan suggested. "Why did she come back? What happens when my suspension is up? What is she going to do then? Make up another lie saying her mother is still sick? How could she be so stupid not to quit?" Jason ferociously asked Brendan. "Jason, maybe I can help. Just tell me what happened," Brendan insisted again. "She tried to rape me," he said slowly, voice shaking in fear of the event.
|
| |
cree: 26.11.2006 - mis a jour: 26.11.2006
"Oh my god!" Brendan shouted. He quickly stood up in awe of the situation. "How could you let her even do that?" Brendan instantly questioned. "I'm not going to talk about this," Jason said slowly, turning away from Brendan. "I'm so sorry," Brendan said trying to comfort his friend. "I'd appreciate it if you kept your mouth shut. I think it's time you leave now," Jason said. He walked over towards the door and opened the door signaling the exit. Brendan nodded his head and gave one last awkward look at him and at a snail's pace walked out of the apartment building, still in shock of the situation.

The following morning soon came afterwards. Emily came walking up the flight of stairs, trailing closely behind her sister. She continued walking until she reached the platform where the apple statue rested. There, she saw Shanda sitting aimlessly on the left bench alone. Emily walked over towards Shanda and casually sat down next to her like old friends. "Hey!" Shanda greeted her as Emily adjusted herself to the seat. "Hey, what are you doing out here?" Emily asked. "I'm always out here in the morning, it's nice to get the fresh air," Shanda replied. "Are they still planning to expel Jason?" Emily curiously asked. "I don't think so, I talked to him last night on the phone," Shanda explained.
|
| |
cree: 26.11.2006 - mis a jour: 26.11.2006
"What did he say?" Emily interrupted. "Not much. It was kind of weird, he would be calm for one minute and then the next all grumpy. I don't know, I still feel like something's troubling him," Shanda answered. "Maybe he's grounded and was not supposed to be on the phone," Emily suggested. "No, his mom said it was alright to talk. So hows umm?" Shanda began and then started coughing soon after. "I didn't talk to him yet," Emily replied, slightly upset. "Well what are you waiting for? Just go to his house, knock on the door and tell him. But you have to be serious and stare him in the eyes. Get him all scared and stuff," Shanda suggested. "It's not that easy," Emily complained.
|
| |
cree: 26.11.2006 - mis a jour: 26.11.2006
"What's so hard about it? Have your mom drive you up the driveway then knock on the door, tell him and leave," Shanda said raising her voice. "That's a little mean," Emily retorted. "It's up to you. You have to make the decision on your own. Follow your heart, just don't do anything stupid girl," Shanda suggested. "Thanks. Well I'm gonna go inside now and figure this all out," Emily replied scooting off the bench. She recollected herself then continued walking up the steps to the front door of the school building.

Second period soon arrived once again. Like usual, Brendan and Kylie were somewhat early to class. They both copied down the notes from the board and then calmly talked together amongst themselves, waiting for class to begin. They would both ramble on with their conversations, giggling at the occasional jokes. However, something today was quite different as soon as May walked into the doorway. The second the girls laid eyes on each other, all hell broke loose. They booth stared at each other with both jaws hanging wide open. There was another thing that they both shared in common that day, something more materialistic than a boy.

May continued to walk forward into the classroom, then immediately stopped in front of Kylie and Brendan's desk. May glared at Kylie fiercely, flaring her nostrils at her with both hands formed into fists. Brendan's eyes suddenly widen at the sight of both girls wearing the same top. They both wore a striped hooded sweatshirt with olive gray and turquoise stripes. The two girls continued to stare at each other, without saying one word to another. Brendan wondered how long they could possibly stand there without saying anything. May would eventually have to take her seat once class started.
"Nice outfit girls," Brendan said, breaking the tension between the two girls.
|
| |

Immediately both girls broke out in laughter at Brendan's compliment. Brendan smiled, and then started to laugh along with the two. Within seconds the girls stopped laughing and listened while Brendan laughed alone at himself. "Thanks, but I think it looks better on me," May insisted. "Hmm? I don't know May, I think it looks better on me," Kylie added in. Brendan looked at the two of them dumbstruck. This was ironically unexpected for him and he already anticipated the next question the girls would ask. He bit his lip slowly, and then squinted a bit in fear. "Who looks better in this shirt?" May asked with a huge smile on her face.

Brendan grunted a bit then looked away briefly to think about the situation. As he turned back both girls stared at him eagerly awaiting his answer. "Um?. Well.." Brendan said unable to respond. "Well what?" Kylie asked. "It looks better on?" Brendan said slowly. "Well it clearly looks better on?" Brendan repeated himself again. Like a miracle from above, the bell soon rang signaling the start of class. May snickered at the two of them, and then walked towards her seat and sat down. Kylie looked over her right shoulder to see Brendan panting like a dog. "You're such a dork," Kylie teased him.

"Why do I feel like you two played me?" Brendan said out loud to himself. "That was pretty funny. You should have seen your face. So, Emily's going to Ryan's house after school and I'm going. Do you wanna come?" Kylie offered. "I got stuff to do after school, sorry," Brendan politely refused. "Like what, homework? You can do that later," Kylie suggested. "Just not in the mood and it's not because of what just happened," Brendan answered back. "Come on, it will be fun. We can swim in his pool," Kylie suggested. "I don't feel like going. Don't you have any other friends?" Brendan asked. "Fine then, don't come. I don't need to see your scrawny ass in a bathing suit anyways," Kylie retorted. "What! You haven't even seen me in a bathing suit!" Brendan shouted out loud.

"Excuse me, this is math class if you guys haven't forgotten!" Mr. Dyer shouted to the two of them. Sounds of laughter soon followed; their conversation had been loud enough for the entire class to hear. Brendan looked at Mr. Dyer with regret of what he had just said, however, Mr. Dyer looked at the two of them and snickered. "Unless you two are talking about the curves on the asymptotes, which you aren't. I suggest you keep quiet and listen to me explain these algebraic equations," Mr. Dyer suggested. "I'm sorry," Brendan apologized, not wanting to get in trouble. Mr. Dyer looked at the two of them with grief and sighed deeply.

"I'm going to have to break you two up; all you do is talk and laugh. May, since you and Kylie seem to be wearing the same shirt, I figure you two will get along well. May switch seats with Brendan," Mr. Dyer commanded them. "Oh this is going to be fun," Kylie whispered as Brendan gathered up his things from off the desk. Brendan grasped tightly onto his belongings, then marched to the back of the classroom and sat next to Ben. May did the same, only much more upset than Brendan could ever be. May placed her books onto the far edge of the desk, then moved her chair over so she kept a great distance away from Kylie.

"I'm not Esma, the vampire. I won't bite you," Kylie advised her. May shook her head and then miraculously moved her books and chair closer to Kylie. "Maybe we both picked up on the wrong start." May suggested. "Yeah, I think so too. Why don't we call truce? You know Brendan is only a friend. Do you seriously think I like him?" Kylie asked. "Well as long as you two are just friends - then yeah, I guess I'll call a truce this once," May agreed. "Well we better do our work now, we wouldn't want to be moved next to scary Harry," Kylie advised. May smiled and picked up her pencil and refocused her attention towards the center of the classroom.

The remainder of the school day flew by easily. Without delay, the last period of the day arrived on schedule. Ms. Beverly greeted the class with a warm welcome, then soon piled them a long list of upcoming assignments along with short stories and comprehension questions that needed to be read and completed by the end of the week. For once the students actually wanted the vampire-like substitute, Miss Serenity back. After endless minutes of tedious hard work, only five minutes remained. The majority of the students soon stopped working and eagerly awaited the bell to free them from class.
"May, are you mad at me?" Brendan asked as he closed his book and stopped working. "Why would I be mad at you?" May asked a bit confused.

"Never mind, forget what I just said," Brendan said changing the conversation. "It's about Kylie isn't it?" May questioned him. "Maybe, I mean you were mad at her and it's my fault you have to sit next to her," Brendan explained. "Stop worrying about it. Look I'm sorry, I trust you two are friends and nothing more." May reassured him. "Maybe we can hangout after school or something then?" Brendan asked. "I can't, I have a student council meeting," May answered disappointedly. "What about tomorrow?" Brendan asked again. "I can't either, my mom's making me go with her to grocery store," May replied with another excuse. "Oh," Brendan said disappointedly. He lowered his head nearer to the table and stared down at the books in front of him.

May gathered up her things and grabbed them off the table. She carried her books in her right arm and walked away, lining up near the door with the rest of the students. Shortly after, the bell rang and the remainder of the students exited the classroom in an orderly fashion. Brendan raised his head and then grabbed his things and pushed in his chair. He started walking out of the classroom, until Ms. Beverly interrupted him on his way out. "Brendan, just wondering did you see Jason yesterday?" She asked casually. "Maybe I did," Brendan answered smoothly.

Ms. Beverly winced at him and then waved her hand, letting him go. She mischievously watched him exit the classroom, aware of the fact that Brendan might possibly know her secret. However, she kept quiet and did not mention anything just in case he didn't know. Brendan stepped out of the classroom and entered the crowded hallway. Most of the students were rushing out of the building and chatting amongst their peers before they rode the bus or drove home. He looked straight down the main hallway and sighed as he was about to Tetris his way through the crowds of people. "Brendan, what was that all about?" a voice nearby asked him. He made a small gulped and scanned the distance for the speaker of the question. Then he saw her, at the corner of the door post and possibly spying on his brief conversation with Ms. Beverly.

"It was nothing, Shanda," He answered. "I didn't know you went to his house yesterday. When I called him, he was acting all strange," Shanda replied. Brendan's eyes slightly widen; he tried to keep composure without possibly hinting the secret. "Yeah, I wasn't supposed to be over because he's grounded, so his mom got mad," Brendan lied. "Ooh, Brendan's breaking rules. What the hell was that with Ms. Beverly? Why would she want to know if you had seen him or not?" Shanda questioned him. 'Damn! What's my excuse this time?' He asked himself. "I was supposed to deliver his homework," Brendan answered. "Aww? aren't you nice. Well I better let you go now. I wouldn't want you to miss the bus," Shanda said cutting off their conversation. Brendan smiled at her, and then walked down the hallway towards his locker and eventually out the door, boarding his bus.

Emily gazed out the passenger window of her mother's car. The car was now strolling up the hill of Ryan's estate. His house was quite large, twice the size of the house she was currently living in and had an upstairs story as well. It was however much smaller than she expected. From what her sister told her, she expected a house as of a similar size from the mansions on MTV's Cribs. Nonetheless, the house was still enormous and was also well landscaped. Their front yard was very tidy, with grass three shades greener than the grass at her house and flowers that actually looked healthy and fruitful. The car finally came to a stop and immediately she felt the rush of adrenaline making her sick to her stomach.

"Wow! I really should have brought my camera," Kylie shouted. She hurriedly opened the door of the car and stepped out, smelling the fresh scents of the garden. On the opposite side of the car, her friend Angela stepped out as well. However, she was more collective and reserved about her attitude towards the house. Emily still remained in the passenger seat of the car. She looked over at her mother, giving her a look of disappointment. "This is going to be a disaster. Why does Kylie's friend have to come anyways?" Emily complained. "She told me it was alright with you. Just relax, it will be alright. You are making a big deal out of this," Her mother said in relaxed tone of voice.

"Maybe I am making a big deal out of it? So when will you be here to pick us up?" Emily asked. "How about in 30 minutes? That gives you enough time to look around and not get too comfortable. Well good luck. If something happens just call me immediately, okay?" Her mother answered. She glanced over at her daughter, whom was slowly exiting the car. She smiled at her one last time and then watched as the girls walked up to the door together. She gave one last wave and then carefully backed out of the long hillside driveway, leaving both daughters behind.
"Well this is it," Kylie reminded her sister. Emily shook her head at her sister in disapproval. Her nervous hand drew near the doorbell until her fingers were inches away.

Carefully, she pressed down on the button, and then slyly scooted behind her sister. Kylie noticed her sister behind her and laughed at her immaturity. She stepped away from the door, leaving Emily wide open for the greeting. The girls waited patiently for someone to answer. Finally, the door soon opened and a blonde haired woman in her early forties greeted them.
"Hello, you must be Emily. I didn't realize you were coming over with your friends," The woman answered with her eyes widening and smiling at the girls. "Nice to see you Mrs. Harper," Emily smiled at Ryan's mother. "Oh please, call me Jennifer. Come in girls, I'll call Ryan down right now," She warmly welcomed them.

The girls walked in the house only to be astonished by the interior. The floors were absolutely spotless; the girls could see their own reflection. Each piece of furniture looked very high end and the house was so well kept and decorated. "I wonder what his dad does for a living," Angela whispered. "Emily you have to be out of your mind. If you stay with him long enough you can marry him, divorce him and own a piece of this property," Kylie suggested. "I don't care if he's rich or not," Emily refused. She continued to stare off in the distance at the well-furnished house. She eventually stopped looking and turned away, staring at a blank wall; the elegance was starting to disgust her. She knew deep down inside Ryan was a spoiled rich kid who always had to have his way.

Footsteps soon came from the stairs. At the peak of the stairs she saw Ryan and his mother coming down. Like the beating of her heart, their feet motioned down the stairs in a rhythmic pattern. Emily stared at Ryan as he came. She heard he got a black eye but his face did not show a single sign of it. Then she noticed powder like substance slightly below his eye and what looked to be a cut on his lower lip. She kept her lips tightly sealed together and tried not to say anything. Finally Ryan took his last step and came rushing at Emily with his arms wide open. He wrapped his arms around her giving her a nice squeeze, and then slowly let go. Free from his arms, Emily let out a small cough, and then recollected herself.

"I didn't know you were coming!" Ryan said in surprise. He looked over at Kylie and Angela and gave the two of them a wink and a smile. "Yeah," Emily said lazily. "Who is she?" Ryan whispered. "I don't even know myself. One of Kylie's crazy friends," Emily responded. "So how was the dance at your old school?" He popped the question. "Um? it was fine," She struggled to answer. "I'm guessing you heard all about the fight at the dance," Ryan stated. "Yeah," She replied sounding uninterested. "Gloria, will you make some cookies for the guests here," Her mother called out. "Who's Gloria?" Emily asked in confusion. "Our maid," Ryan answered smoothly. Emily made a sour face; she couldn't believe they had a maid when Ryan's mother appeared to be a stay at home housewife.

"Ryan, why don't you give your friends a tour of the house," Ryan's mother suggested noticing the two bored faces standing aimlessly in the foyer. "Oh, sorry? What would you ladies like to see first?" Ryan said kindly. "The pool!" Kylie called out. Emily rolled her eyes, and then followed as Ryan guided them towards the pool. Ryan directed them towards the side of the house, opening the door leading them to the backyard where the pool was situated. "Well this is the pool," Ryan pointed out. Kylie slanted her eyes, seeing the pool was much smaller than she expected. Nonetheless, she smiled and wowed at the sight of it. "Hey, how did you know I have a pool anyways? You girls didn't happen to bring your bathing suits did you?" Ryan asked with a huge grin on his face.

"No, Emily wouldn't let me," Kylie complained. "How come?" Ryan asked lowering his eyebrows at Emily. "We don't know how to swim," she quickly lied. "You're tall enough to reach the bottom. You won't drown," Ryan assured her. "I'm going to go inside and use your bathroom," Angela suggested as she stood in boredom watching both sisters argue with each other. "Don't get lost," Kylie teased her. Angela sighed inwardly, and then stepped away from them leaving the three of them alone near the calm waters of the pool. "So did you come to visit me and heal my wounds?" Ryan asked Emily. "Yeah," She pretended to agree. Emily walked over to the outdoor recliner and took a seat isolating her from Ryan.

"Is something troubling her?" Ryan asked Kylie who was still standing near him. "Yeah, she doesn't want to talk about it," Kylie answered. "Well what is it?" He continued to ask. "She had a bad experience in a pool, so she is absolutely terrified," She lied. "I see," He said slowly. He turned away from Kylie and walked over to where Emily was sitting. "Why don't I show you the rest of the house?" He suggested. "Okay, that sounds better than sitting out here," Emily agreed. She got up from her chair and followed Ryan as he guided the two of them back into the house. "I feel so bad if I just break up with him right now," Emily thought to herself.

"Did she fall in or something? Your friend?s taking a long time in the bathroom," Ryan pointed out. "I think so," Kylie smirked. Ryan led the girls up to the staircase then started walking up the stairs with the two girls trailing behind. "Why don't I show you my room first," Ryan suggested. "Sure, whatever," Emily said uninterested. Ryan continued walking up the stairs then waited for the girls to catch up. As soon as they caught up he led them down the hallway then waited right in front of his room. He turned the doorknob saying, "This is where the magic happens." Kylie laughed a bit, however Emily rolled her eyes in boredom.

As soon as the door started to creek open, sounds from inside soon filled their ears. There was rustling, drawers closing and heavy breathing from inside the room. Ryan pushed forward on the door and from inside came a loud slam. Ryan peeked inside to see the room appear exactly as he left it. "That's weird, I sworn I heard noises inside," he said stepping into the room. Kylie stared inside, noticing how large it was. It was well furnished with expensive looking furniture, but it was all not to her taste. The drawers appeared slightly cracked open and at the corner of the room was a pair of his boxers. "Nice room," Emily said trying to sound impressed.

"Thanks," Ryan said as his cheeks became flushed. He walked over to the bed and patted it down several times. "Feel how soft my bed is," He said winking at Emily. "It looks soft from here," She answered, containing herself from his annoyance. "Can I lie down on your bed?" Kylie asked. "Sure go right ahead," Ryan answered. Kylie leaped from mid-air and dove straight into the bed. The bed bounced a few times, but still remained steady. She started squirming all around his bed, feeling the softness of his mattress and bed sheets. "What's that creaking noise?" Emily asked a bit confused to why she was hearing such a noise every time her sister moved.

"That's weird," Ryan answered. He walked straight up to the bed and jumped onto it to check if the noise was still apparent. The bed started to creak again, only this time it was much larger. "I'm going to get off now," Kylie suggested scooting off. "Kylie, don't tell me you broke his bed," Emily teased her. Ryan scooted off the edge of the bed landing back on the ground. Then more creaking noises came and a human-like cough. "Did your bed just cough?" Emily asked puzzled. "Alright, something weird is going on," Ryan stated. Ryan bent down on the ground near the edge of the bed. He lowered his head closer to the floor and checked underneath it.

"What the hell!" Ryan shouted as he saw someone underneath his bed. He grabbed hold of the person and started to pull them. He continued pulling until the body was fully emerged in the light. "Angela, what the hell are you doing here?" Kylie questioned her. She looked at the three innocently, like she didn't do anything. Ryan looked down at her pockets, as she remained lying on the ground. They were fairly stuffed with what appeared to be items stolen from his bedroom. "Great! Wait until mom hears you brought your collecto friend over here," Emily complained in disgust. She looked stared at the three of them all lying down on the floor like children.

"God! I feel like I'm your babysitter!" Emily shouted in anger. She held out her hand towards Ryan, offering to pull him up from the ground. She pulled him up and Ryan stared back at her trying to sympathize for her situation. "I'm sorry. It's your sister's fault. I'll have my mom call Angela's parents and settle the whole situation," Ryan started to comfort her. He drew nearer to her and started to place his hand on her shoulder. "Get your hands off of me!" Emily backed away from him. "Emily, what's the matter?" He asked a bit confused. "That's it, I can't take it anymore. I can't keep lying to you any longer. I had enough of this. Ryan, I'm breaking up with you. I'm sorry, but this just isn?t working out. You're a nice guy, you're sweet, kind, but you just aren't for me," She confessed. She tried to keep a straight face while looking at him.

He kept his lips pressed together, silent and confused of what she just said. She looked deeply into his eyes and beneath them she could see tears. They were tears he was trying to hold back. He loved her more than anything. She meant the world to him, but she was only living a lie; one that she could no longer deny. There was no real chemistry between the two of them. There was no love, just childish ambitions of having a lover for the sake of having one. They each wanted someone to be there for them, someone to hold and to comfort them when they needed support. They were only friends and nothing more. There was no hope for the sophomore and the junior. They were not meant to be together and therefore it was time to say goodbye.

Ryan spoke of nothing; instead he stood there near the doorway, signaling for them to leave. Angela emptied out her pockets and placed the stolen items on the floor. Kylie, Emily and Angela all together marched out of the door and walked slowly down the stairs. Ryan walked over to the top of the stairs and watched the girls take small steps down the ladder of life. Emily kept walking and tried not to stop. She wanted to look back and take one last glance at his face. Perhaps apologize one last time, but the girls behind her kept walking. Emily finally reached the last step on the stairs. "Emily." She sworn she heard Ryan call out. Instead of turning back, she shook her head and continued walking out the door and away from the boy that never was.

|
 |

|
 |
