The summer was almost over, and Livvie and I would soon be going back to our normal lives. This summer we had rented a little flat by the beach. We had a wonderful view, and I spent most of my time painting. Like today, we spent most of the day on the deck, me painting, and Livvie dancing and singing along to the music. She really did have a wonderful voice and a talent for dancing. When lunch time rolled around, Livvie begged me to take her to this little resturant in the village. I finaly relented and changed my paint-smeared clothes for something more presentable.

We sat on the front porch, enjoying iced-teas and sandwiches. I promised Livvie an ice-cream cone, and went to buy one from the man set up at the other end of the porch. I couldn't resist, I got one, too. I know, where is my will power?

Livvie and I enjoyed our ice-cream and were about to go inside to pay the check, when the ice-cream man came over to our table. "Your Regan Kippings, right?" He asked.
I blushed and replyed that I was and introduced Livvie. Maybe it was her shooking ruby-red hair that made him gasp, and spin around to face me again. I didn't know, but what ever it was, he looked awfully mad.
"You don't remeber me, do you?"
"No, have we met before. I can't seem to recall," I told him. I figured he was one of the guys who had tried to hit on me at the beach. It's not my fault that I just happen to look good in a bikini.
He groaned and muttered something under his breath that I didn't catch, but was sure Livvie had because she turned beet red. "Nevermind, if you can't remember it must not mean all that much to you," I was surprised at the hostility in his voice. It threw me, and before I could give him a snappy comeback, he was gone.

After lunch, Livvie and I stopped at the park. I was enjoying an old paper-back romance novel, while Livvie played on the swings. The creaking of the chains became rythmatic, so when they stopped I looked up to see where Livvie had gone. Before I could even gaze around to find her, she called out, "Can we keep her?" "She likes you," I looked up to see who had spoken. I relized it was the ice-cream guy from the cafe'.
"What's her name?" Livvie questioned, searching the guys face.
"Calipso," he answered."By the way, I'm Evan Hollis," he said turning to me and sticking out his hand. I took it. "I'm sorry I was so rude, but I was hoping you would remember me"
"I'm sorry, I don't. But while we are on the topic of you being rude, why did you get so mad when I said I didn't know who you were?"
"Oh, ummm... I was just hoping you would remember me from your book signing. I was the one who asked for the autograph," He said quickly. I knew he was lying, but went along with him anyways. (Cont. on next page)

"Oh, yeah? Well, I hoped you like the book. Come on Livvie, we have to go. I need to finish that picture before we leave," I hastily gathered my belongings, and grabbed Livvie's hand to usher her along.
"Mommy, why did you let that man belive you saw him at the book singing? You haven't had it yet," I sushed Livvie, and praticly drug her to the car. "Because, it was better to end the conversation there before we found out he was some physco person wanting to kill us."
"Ooohhhh... Then why did he lie?"
Gosh Livvie could get on your nerves," Because... I don't know. He's a weird-o. Okay. End of story."

**Two Weeks Later** After returning back home to Pleasantview, I finaly did have my book signing. I even half expected Evan to show up, but that thought evaporated when my manager made an announcement. If I would have known what my manger had in mind beforehand, belive me, I wouldn't have been there. Well, she decided to hold a contest, and let's just say the winner didn't get a personaly autograph copy of my book. So before I could immerce myself in signings, she announced the contest. A contest she called 'Who's Your Daddy?' It was a contest to find Livvie's dad. I could just imagen the sick-os' who would apply, but I went along with it because it would be good publicity. Plus I knew there could be the chance that Livvie's father actualy DID apply. I mean I can dream, can't I?

After many weeks of hard work going through all the resumes, we finaly narrowed it down to 10 finalists. We decided that they would all meet at my house. Livvie was charged with a certian joy as she sat on the steps waiting. She reminded me of me when I was a little girl waiting for my father to come home from the office, but that was before I found out the hard truth about him. I had decided that Livvie wasn't going to have that kind of life, my kind of life. It was decided that Livvie and I would spend two hours with each guy over a three day period. I was to ask them questions about what I had been like around the time of Livvie's conception. Each guy was asked to tell me one thing that would jog my memory of our time together. Their were actualy two guys that I had been with. I knew Livvie was glad that we were closer to finding out who her father was.

One of the two guys was Allen Beaumont. *He became a chemical engineer, making 50-55 thousand a year*. The other was Billy Preston, we quickly crossed him off our list. After sending the day with both guys I had the feeling that Allen could possibly be her father. Allen and I soon became close, and decided to start dating. *From On the Wildside by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.

Our relationship was moving fast, but for once I was excited about my love life. Life was looking pretty good, I had sold one of my paintings in a New Simork art gallery, and was planning on doing an art show soon. I had decided to start a fashion line after my manager suggested the idea, and Livvie had got accepted in to a advanced class for the upcoming school year. We were all excited about what the future might bring.

There was just something about Livvie's eyes that were trying to tell me something. I mean she acted like a happy, normal little girl. Except she got this scared doe look in her eyes when Allen tried to show her any affection. I also noticed that she was starting to lock her door, but all girls around her age are starting to need their privacy. Right?

Allen was always thinking of fun stuff for us to do on dates, that night we went dancing and to dinner at John Perrier's. I didn't think nothing of it as more than a romantic dinner, until he surprised me with a ring. I was speechless. In the time that we had been together, I had been so happy. I quickly said yes, and tingled while he slipped the ring on my finger. We decided to tell Livvie the next day.

Not long after our announcment to Livvie, (which she didn't take too well, she didn't talk to me for a week. I thought she would have been happier.) Allen bought a new car, bought a bunch of high-teck electronics, and quit his job. He told me he had to look like a "high-priced celebrity's fiance'," and that his job was going no where and he was looking for a new one. For a while he did "look," but that didn't last long.

Then one night, when I though Livvie was asleep, I brought up some of her stuff that was downstairs after cleaning-up. Boy, was I surprised to see the light shining under the crack of the door. Livvie was always good about sticking to her bed time. I opened the door, expecting to find her reading, but instead I found Allen nealing beside her bed moving his hand under her covers. I dropped the basket I had been carrying, which made Allen straighten up and spin around to face me. I raced over and grabbed Livvie, nearly knocking over the lamp as I carried her down and out to the car. I placed her in the backseat and started the car, screeching off into the night.

I drove to a gas station almost fifty miles away from our house. Livvie's eyes had dryed and her face was tear-streaked. I felt horible, how could I not know what he was doing to her? I mean, I was pretty sure he was her father. What kind of person was he, to prey upon a little girl who should trust him. I washed Livvie's and my own face, and went to find a payphone. I couldn't let some sick, twisted man roam the streets looking for another family to prey upon. After making the call, I placed Livvie in the car and we drove to the police station to place a full report.

After they had gathered all they could at the police station, I called my long time friend, Casey, and asked if we could stay with her for a couple days. She said we could and we headed to her place. After settling Livvie in the spare room, I explained to her what had happened. She cincured with me that he should be locked up, and the key lost. Then I broke down and wept. I couldn't hold it in any longer. I cried for Livvie, for my ignorance, for myself, and especially for my mistakes.

*10 Months later* After a long court possesion, Allen was found guilty of child abuse, and was sentenced to 8 years in prison. It turns out that the credit cards I had let Allen use were maxed out. He had been transfering the money to a private account. He was nothing but a low-down, gold-digger, amoung other things. It also turns out that he had been lying to me when he said he knew me when I was younger. So he wasn't Livvie's dad afterall. We were back to square one if not back even farther.

On Livvie's 12th birthday, a card came. It was addressed to Livvie with a letter to me inside. I figured it was from my friend Casey and the twins. "Mom, the card isn't signed. Who do you think it's from?" Livvie questioned me, her eyes scanning the envolope for a return address.
"I don't know. Let me read the letter to see if it says who it's from." The letter read: Dear Regan, I want you to know that I knew she was mine, when I saw my own eyes. I was your first, and with that we created somethng splendid. I have never stopped loving you, or your tender ways. I hope you can recall he guy behind the blue eyes. Love Always, The one who will always adore you I was astounded, the letter was from a guy claiming to be's Livvie's father. I couldn't let her see this, it would only bring up bad times.
