"Who are you looking good for?" Shanda questioned Emily as the two of them stood in front of the mirror of the girl's bathroom. It?s already been two weeks since Emily broke up with her ex-boyfriend Ryan. He had been suspended for two weeks ever since he got into a fight at the dance. Jason, however still had one more week of suspension left to serve because of the fake entry he dropped in. "I don't know," Emily slowly stated. With her right hand, she started tweaking her hairstyle, moving strands of hairs to different places and fluffing up random sections. After she was finished, she continued to stare at her new image in the mirror. It was very different from the hairstyle that she usually carried from a day-to-day basis.

"You're trying to make him jealous aren't you?" Shanda asked. "Maybe I am," Emily answered plainly. Shanda shook her head, swaying from left to right. She obviously knew the answer to that question. "Hey, do you hear something?" Shanda asked, hearing a series of heavy breathing coming from the set of stalls next to them. "Oh Sally!" A deep voice moaned from within the stalls. Emily and Shanda both froze in silence, covering their mouth that now hung wide from the presence of a masculine voice. Both Emily and Shanda carefully tipped-toed near the stalls, wondering what was possibly inside. "Shhh... Be quiet Jimmy they can hear you," A soft voice whispered from within the same stall. Both girls tried so hard to keep a straight face; it would only be a matter of seconds before one of them would erupt. Emily pointed towards the bathroom door and Emily and Shanda slowly walked out before causing a scene.

"What the hell was that?" Shanda shouted out loud as soon as they exited the girl's bathroom. "That's gross. Why would somebody even consider such things?" Emily suggested with a sour expression on her face. "That's why I make sure there's plenty of tissue on those toilet seats," Shanda assured her. "I'm gonna go to class now," Emily said, changing the subject. She slowly turned away from the bathroom and started walking down the hallway. "I guess I'll go to class too. Hate to be around when those two come out," Shanda agreed following closely behind Emily. "Do you think Mrs. Graham will let me switch seats?" Emily asked. "It's worth a try, but don't count on it," Shanda answered.

Emily and Shanda continued walking down the hallway until they both reached the art room. They both walked inside and stood next to their assigned canvas, which clearly indicated they were going to paint today. As expected, Mrs. Graham refused to change Emily?s seating arrangement and remained seated next to her ex-boyfriend Ryan. It was only a matter of time before he walked into the classroom. When he finally appeared, with ease he walked over to his assigned canvas, avoiding all contact with Emily whatsoever.
`Maybe, he really is over me. I must have dumped him good,? Emily thought to herself. Class soon started shortly afterwards, with Mrs. Graham giving the students directions on what to paint. Still Ryan remained unusually silent, isolating himself from the others around him.

Emily couldn't bear to be ignored. She wanted him to do something, at least glance at her and look at her new hairstyle; or even say some rude comment. She looked over and stared at him, as he played his little mind game with her. He pretended not to notice, holding the paintbrush firmly in his hand and filling up the canvas with an assortment of colors. Emily held her breath and probably asked the most the pathetic thing she could have said in this situation.
"Can I use your red paint? I'm all out." She said as confident as she could. "Here," He answered, handing her the red paint like nothing had ever happened between the two of them. Emily bit her lip. She was dazed and confused. A part of her wished he had said something mean to her. She wanted to argue with him, make him feel jealous and miserable; however he was all too content with the situation.

"You know, the only reason I went out with you was because I felt sorry. You were so pathetic, I couldn't imagine saying no," Emily blurted out. A rush of adrenaline just shot right out of her. She couldn't believe she had just said that to him. "That's okay. You weren't a good girlfriend to begin with," Ryan said smoothly, not even flinching at her statement. "That's because I was your only girlfriend Ryan! You're a terrible kisser by the way. I?ve gotten better kisses from my neighbor's dog," Emily retorted. "Hmm... It?s nice to know you really are a female dog," He said with ease. Emily's mouth hung wide open, she was speechless and out of comebacks. She stared at the ground, with both hands formed into fists. She wanted to attack him, but she couldn't, and even if she did she would get humiliated.

'Come on Emily. Think of a damn comeback,' She said to herself, but it was too late. Ryan was already refocused in his work. Even if she had said something, Ryan would probably have an even worse comeback waiting for her. She sighed inwardly, admitting to defeat. Lazily she grabbed her paintbrush and dipped it into the red paint. After smothering her brush with color, she stroked her brush against the empty canvas. She had already fallen greatly behind within the period and needed to catch up quickly.

The next several class periods swiftly zoomed by. Before long it was already lunchtime. The students all rushed out of the classrooms as soon as the bell rang. They eagerly ran down to the lunchroom hoping to get a good place in line, but it wasn't long before the line soon lengthened. Brendan found himself somewhere towards the end of the line standing next to Kenny.
"What?s for lunch today?" Kenny asked Brendan. "I don't know. I always get salad," Brendan said slightly annoyed. "Hold my spot in line. I'm going to go check," Kenny requested. Brendan sighed, and then nodded his head and watched Kenny slowly exit the long line. Shortly after, Kenny came back to the line, re-entering where he last stood. "Today's special is pork burrito, refried beans, and Spanish rice. Sounds delicious," Kenny announced to him. Brendan couldn't help but laugh. "It sounds more like Monday surprise to me," He disagreed.

"I guess just pizza and fries then," Kenny told him. "Do you know how much salt they put in those fries and how much grease is in that pizza?" He questioned him. "Brendan you're practically bones, get some fat on your bones," Kenny suggested. "Whatever... Don't you feel the least bit guilty? Jason's still suspended because of you," He questioned, changing the subject about school lunches. "A little, more relieved that I'm not in trouble," Kenny answered. "It's your fault he's suspended. You're the dumb ass who came up with that stupid plan. And of all people, why did you tell Ryan?" Brendan continued to question him. "I'm sorry I'm so damn stupid. Just drop it Brendan. It's done and over with. He'll be back next week," Kenny assured him.

Brendan remained silent, not saying another word for the duration of the time he stood in line. He was beginning to hate Kenny's guts. Then he wondered why he even sat at that lunch table in the first place. He only sat there because Jason did. He wasn't friends with any of the other guys nor did he like them. He only remained at that table for Kylie and the interesting conversations the guys always brought up. At last Brendan finally reached the service counter; he grabbed his salad from off the fridge and paid for his meal. He walked over to his usual lunch table, quickly noticing how empty it looked. The only one sitting there was Ben and surprisingly Emily. Trevor was always late to lunch and Kylie appeared whenever.

He carefully sat down in the chair; tension had already arisen the moment he looked up. He was seated across from Ben and next to Emily on his left hand side. He made little eye contact with them and instead focused on eating his meal. Within seconds, Kenny soon joined them taking his seat next to Ben. Only two more chairs remained on both opposite ends of the table.
"Emily, what are you doing here?" Kenny popped the question. Brendan smiled as the awkward silence was finally broken. "I just thought I would sit here today. Ryan's back and he'll probably be sitting at my old table," Emily answered. "Hey, you can sit here everyday. I don't mind," Kenny smiled, eyeing the prize that rested below her neckline. Emily rolled her eyes and gave him an "I don't think so" look.

"You're sitting in Kylie's seat," Brendan rudely pointed out. "So... it's not like she can't sit somewhere else," Emily said a bit frustrated. Brendan closed his mouth, failing to object to her. Once again the awkward silence amongst the table reformed, leaving Brendan to chew on his watered down salad. He jammed the pieces of lettuce in his mouth, hoping Kylie would soon show up. And before long he saw her slowly approaching, only someone else was with her. He slumped down into his chair, already assuming that she would not sit at the table.

"Is that the table you keep talking about?" Angela asked, walking closely behind her. "Yeah, but Emily's there. Let's sit somewhere else," Kylie suggested. The girls walked past the table leaving the boys disappointed. They sat down at the table across from Kylie's usual table, where Ryan usually sat. "Who's the carrot top?" Angela pointed to the red headed kid sitting next to her. "I don't know. I always see him sitting with them. Why don't you ask him?" Kylie answered. "What's your name?" Angela curiously asked. "Hi, I'm John," He answered with his voice nearly cracking. Angela rudely turned away and faced back towards Kylie. "Damn, I can't believe it. Seriously, what makes her think she can take my seat?" Kylie complained.

"She's probably jealous, or she wants to piss everyone off. Her sitting there would get both you and Ryan mad," Angela stated. "Sorry, if I?d known this would have happened I wouldn't have made you skip class," Kylie apologized. "I felt like skipping anyways. Oh look, there he is," Angela stopped as Ryan stood in front of them. "Why are you two sitting here?" He asked a bit puzzled. Both girls in unison pointed at Emily who looked fairly uncomfortable sitting at that table. "I don't know what her deal is," Ryan said as he sat down in the chair next to Kylie. "Me neither. She's got a lot of issues. She was pretty plain and simple at our school. I don't know why she just felt it was necessary to change. I guess its not working out," Kylie explained.

"Hi Ryan!" John said eagerly with a huge grin on his face. Ryan nodded, and then turned away from him, now facing the girls. "If it makes you feel any better. I kinda feel sorry for you. I mean, you practically lost your friends over her and she wasn't even worth it," Kylie reassured him. "Yeah, but enough about her... What brings you two here?" He asked, raising a left eyebrow at them. "We wanted to sit with you Ryan," Angela began to tease in a flirty voice. The four of them all laughed, including John who pretended like he was a part of the conversation. "Did I ever tell you I dated Brendan in the eighth grade?" Angela said causally. "You dated Brendan?" Kylie immediately asked. "Yeah, for like a week. I couldn't even get him to hold my hand. I nearly had to force a kiss on him. I felt bad, because it might have been his first kiss," Angela explained. "I remember that. He tried to keep it a secret, but the whole grade knew about it," Ryan joined in.

"You still like him Kylie?" Angela joked. "No! I never liked him! Seriously, the only one pathetic enough to date him is May. Besides, I have my sights on someone else," Kylie said angrily. "Who? Him?" Angela asked, pointing at Ryan. "Hell no! Sorry, didn't mean it like that Ryan," Kylie shouted, then lowered her voice. "It's okay. I wouldn't date my ex's sister anyways," Ryan said coolly. "Well I don't really like it. It's more of a curious obsession," Kylie continued on. "Who?" Angela spat out. "Ben Connor," She said sweetly. "Who's Ben Connor?" Ryan, Angela, and John all asked. "He's right over there in the light green shirt, right across from Brendan. He's really shy and quiet. I don't know a thing about him. I ask, but he won't tell me," Kylie explained.

"That's because you're so damn weird. I don't even know why I'm friends with you," Angela teased. "Why don't you just stalk him?" Ryan suggested. "Stalk him?" Kylie said a bit puzzled. "I don't know, follow him home. Peak in his windows, dig for more info on him," Ryan explained, feeling a bit awkward to answer. "I'm guessing you've done this before?" Angela asked. "Actually it sounds like a fun idea. I might actually try it," Kylie agreed. "Why the hell are you looking at me for? I'm not helping you," Angela refused. "I can't stalk him alone," Kylie said a bit disappointed. "Good luck with that," Ryan smirked. He grabbed his plate, got up slowly from his seat and walked over to the garbage can and threw out his food. Upon returning to the table the lunch monitor blew the whistle, dismissing everyone for lunch.

Ryan took his merry time strolling through the hallways to his last period of the day. He was actually quite surprised that no really said anything to him about the fight. He was expecting people to call him "wimp" for getting beat down, and then kicking the other person in the... area that hurts the most. Casually he walked into his English class and sat down in his familiar chair. John hadn't arrived yet, so Ryan leisurely sat back in his chair, enjoying what time he had before John would annoy him.
"Hey," A voice whispered to him. Alertly he sat up in his chair and searched the classroom from where the voice came from. Finally he noticed that the voice came from the girl who sat right next to him, he looked up at her with somewhat of a sour expression. "Yeah," Ryan answered. "Just wanted to give you a heads up about the kid you sit next to," The girl replied. "John? What about him?" He asked a bit puzzled.

"I don't know. He's a little weird. Since you?ve been gone, all that kid talks about is you. It's a little creepy if you ask me. He says he's been doing all your homework and misses you sitting next to him," The girl explained. The girl pursed her lips together sealing it closed tight.
Before Ryan could even say anything, John had already entered the room and sat down. Ryan turned around, taking a brief glance at John. His front teeth stuck out, along with chapped lips that rested above and below. He then started to smile as he released a stack of papers and books from his arms. Ryan was in utter shock and speechless of what to even do. Then John began to speak, the saliva stuck to the roof of his mouth now swished all over and John said the most frightening words.

"When I become a sophomore, I wanna be just like you," John said like seven year old child. "Ah uh" The girl next to him reacted, quite appalled. Ryan began to bite his lips. He didn't know what to say. The first option at the top of his head was to punch the kid right in the nose and then dig right into his face, giving him two black eyes. However, he couldn't. He didn't want to hurt John's feelings; the boy had grown emotionally attached to him. 'Do I tell him the truth or let this sick game continue on?' He said to himself. "Um... John" Ryan started, but was interrupted by Ms. Beverly walking into the classroom. Ryan immediately brought his attention to the front of the room and listened to Ms. Beverly lecture. He kept quiet for the remainder of the hour and tried to endure sitting next to him.

Ryan survived and at last, the last bell ending the class period rung. John handed Ryan a huge stack of papers and books and merrily walked out of the classroom. Ryan got up from his chair and grabbed his belongings. He shoved what took John both arms, into his left arm. With his right hand he pushed in his chair and watched Brendan slowly exit the classroom. "Hey, Brendan!" Ryan called out. "Hi," He answered and continued walking, leaving Ryan behind in the classroom. 'Damn, what the hell did I do to him? Suddenly he hates me too,' Ryan said to himself. He took a deep breath, and then walked out of the classroom, ending his first day back.

Emily sluggishly walked up the stairs to the front doors of the school. The worst day of the week had just ended and Tuesday was her chance to pick up from her faults. She continued walking up the stairs, soon approaching the apple statue. She spotted Shanda sitting down on the bench, which was typical. She walked to the bench and sat down beside her.
"Girl what's wrong? You look pretty down," Shanda asked as Emily sat down. "Nothing really. I don't know, the whole making Ryan jealous thing didn't work. He didn't seem to notice or care," Emily told her. "Well at least you are seeing the real him. Forget him, he's already over you. Why aren't you? Emily there's guys out there probably dying to date you. You just gotta get your head of the gutter," Shanda suggested.

"I thought about maybe having a long distance relationship, with my ex-boyfriend Alex," Emily said slowly. "Oh come on! You know those things don't work. The guy always ends up cheating on you," Shanda disagreed. "Alex wouldn't cheat on me. I know him too well. I really miss him. I think we could somehow work it out," Emily explained. "Whatever. Good luck with that," Shanda answered, showing some negativity in her tone. "What's the matter, something troubling you?" Emily asked. "I don't know. It's nothing really, just a little lonely. May's been kinda ignoring me lately. Just a mixture of things I guess," Shanda answered, looking off to the distance. "Sounds complicated... At least you don't have a younger sister that's totally out to get you. I swear. She was sitting with Ryan yesterday at lunch. What the hell was that?" Emily complained.

"Ooh, I hate your sister. You don't know how many girls in my grade that just wanna smack her upside her forehead. You really should stand against her; I mean you're older than her. You have the one year advantage," Shanda told her. "It's just a matter of time. I'll get her back somehow," Emily threatened. "I'd like to see that happen. Well we better head inside now. Don't wanna be late for art," Shanda suggested. The girls both scooted off the bench and walked up the remaining steps to the front of the school building.

May walked into her second period Algebra II class. She arrived early and was one of the first people in the classroom. She took out her notebook and mechanical pencil and started copying down the notes on polynomials. Just as she finished copying down the notes, more and more people entered the classroom. She sat down patiently waiting for her table partner, Kylie to arrive. It wasn't long until she walked through the classroom door, carrying her book, notebook and her assortment of pens and pencils. She sat down in her seat, nearly taking up all of the desk space with her belongings.
"Hey, what are you doing after school?" Kylie immediately asked. May bit her tongue, a bit unresponsive to her sudden question; she never imagined the two of them quite possibly hanging out together.

"Nothing really, how come?" She answered quite curious. "Hmm... Well this is probably going to sound really crazy, but well... You know Ben Connor right? You sat next to him for a while. He was probably pretty quiet, shy, somewhat mysterious right? Well I have this crazy plan. Well more like stalkerish, but anyways I thought it would be fun maybe following him home," Kylie suggested. "What!" May shouted, raising both her eyebrows. "I know it sound ridiculous, but I have this sudden urge to follow him," Kylie explained. "You have to be out of your mind." May retorted. "Please! Come on, it will be fun! Don't tell me you aren't the slightest bit curious?" Kylie tried pressuring her. "A little, but come on, following him home and what ? peeking in his window? What kind of crack are you smoking?" May questioned.

"The kind down the street," Kylie joked. "Well maybe... I guess I could tell my mom there's a student council meeting after school, and then take a taxi home or something," May started to give in. "I'll pay for your taxi fare. Please, it will be fun," Kylie pressured her once again. "Alright, fine I'll go. So how exactly are we going to do this anyways?" May asked. "Don't worry about that, I'll have the details all figured out by the end of the day," Kylie winked at her. May rolled her eyes; she was a little wary of the whole concept. Nonetheless she smiled, pretending to be excited about the scheme. Both girls turned around and looked at Ben and Brendan who sat down next to each other in the back row. The girls smiled and waved at the two of them, and then turned around and waited for class to get started.

The hours pretty much all drifted past one another. Lunchtime returned back to its original order. Kylie sat down with the boys, Ryan and Emily both found new tables and of course John followed Ryan. The students had one last class period left to go.
Brendan walked out of the lunchroom and headed towards his locker. He twisted the dial of the lock to the right combination, took out the needed materials for class, and then gently closed the locker shut. He held his books firm in his right arm and walked down the hallway to his English class. Once he came close to the doorway of the classroom; he walked right in, immediately noticing he and Shanda were the only ones there. He dropped off his belongings on his desk, and then scrambled his way over to Shanda.

"Whoa easy there, you nearly tripped," Shanda said as he sat down. "Sorry, there was something I was meaning to ask you," Brendan said a little embarrassed. Shanda shook her head, she was beginning to get tired of people asking her for advice when she seemed to have unresolved problems of herself. "Yeah, what is it?" Shanda asked leisurely. "I wanna ask May out," Brendan stated clearly. "Whoa! When? Now?" Shanda asked, slightly panicking and nearly rising to her feet. "Yeah today, if you think it's a good time. It's just that I'm tired of waiting, I want to be with her," Brendan explained. Shanda's eyes widen at his explanation.

"You are picking today as a time to ask her out? I don't know... she's been kinda moody lately. She's been pretty distant from me. I honestly don't know what's up with her. Anyways, if you?re going to ask her out... I think you should apologize to her mom. You should go to her house, knock on the door, and apologize to her whole family. Then when you're finished and they accept your apology, ask her out right in front of all of them. Ooh that's gonna surely get you your props," Shanda suggested, sounding a bit excited. "Oh my god, that's perfect!" Brendan applauded her. "Brendan, you seriously have to toughen up though," Shanda commented, ending his excitement. "What do you mean? Like lifting weights or what?" He asked a bit confused.

"I don't mean to sound mean or anything, but I don't find you the least bit attracting. I mean you aren't ugly, but I don't know. You are skinny, a bit whinny, not confident at all, and you seem to be clueless about the littlest things," Shanda explained. "I know, but I'm trying. Besides, that doesn't matter. I'm dating May, not you," Brendan answered. "Yeah, you're dating May," Shanda spoke sluggishly. "Thanks," He smiled, and then walked back to his seat. Shanda watched him walk back, in a sense she felt a bit jealous. It seems like everyone around her all have boyfriends and girlfriends besides her. She felt a bit lonely and left out. In the past, she didn't even bother. She knew no one would date her with her plump body, plain face, and her attitude. She had different priorities and none of the boys at school interested her.

Ms. Beverly walked into the classroom carrying an English textbook and a green folder that appeared familiar to Shanda. She took a closer look at the folder as Ms. Beverly walked past her. For some odd reason she had seen that folder before, but didn't quite now where from. Ms. Beverly sat down at her desk and placed down the textbook and folder and started getting ready in preparation for her class to begin. Shanda still eyed the folder, however she could no longer make it out, it was now buried under the contents on her desk.
'Damn! I gotta know what's in that folder,' Shanda said to herself. However, it was useless; Ms. Beverly hardly left the room during her period. There was no possible way for her to just walk up her and take a peek.

Patiently she waited, looking up at the clock several times. She knew something was up. Ever since she caught Brendan having that conversation with Ms. Beverly, Shanda became quite suspicious of her. She also found it quite odd that Ms. Beverly no longer mentioned anything about her sick mother, who supposedly went to the hospital. She was also quite observant of her new hairstyle, which she no longer kept in a bun. Finally the last the bell rung, ending class. The students all got up from their seats, grabbed their belongings and exited the class in an orderly fashion. Shanda took her merry time slowly getting up from her seat and slowly pushing in her chair. Ms. Beverly was seated at her desk, looking at her computer screen. The folder was still below the textbooks and far out of Shanda?s reach.

'Well if she isn't going to move, I'm going to have to make her,' Shanda said to herself. She causally walked up to Ms. Beverly's desk, putting on her cheerful and kind face. "Hi, I was wondering how your mother was doing?" Shanda politely asked. "Thanks, that's so nice of you to ask. My mom is doing fine. She has been recovering well," Ms. Beverly answered, putting on the same face as Shanda. "That's good to hear. What hospital is she stationed at?" Shanda asked. "Um... Harven Hospital," She replied, struggling to answer. "That's funny, I don't recall there ever being a Harven Hospital," Shanda said, looking a bit confused. "I'm sorry, did I say Harven Hospital? I meant Heartwood Hospital," She corrected herself.

"Oh, would you mind if I came to visit her?" Shanda asked. "Thanks, that's really sweet of you, but I don't think my mother would allow unknown visitors," Ms. Beverly answered with an underlying tone of anger. "Oh, what's this?" Shanda asked pulling the green folder from underneath the textbook. Immediately she noticed stickers from various skateboard companies, drawings, and really crappy writing that looks like a guy did it. "Isn't this Jason's folder?" Shanda asked, holding it up in the air and tilting it a little so the papers would fall out. "Yes, it is," Ms. Beverly answered, snatching the folder out of Shanda?s hand. "Oh, why do you have his folder?" Shanda curiously asked. "Suspension work of course. Don't you have a bus to catch?" Ms. Beverly asked, changing the subject.

"Why yes, I do. I'd better get going," Shanda answered, still continuing her little act. "Have a nice evening now," Ms. Beverly said, waving good-bye to her. Shanda grabbed her books off her desk and walked out of the classroom, furious at her teacher. 'God, she seriously hasn't seen the last of me. I think it's quite obvious now. She made him stay after school so many times, like nobody suspects anything out of it. It's only a matter of time before I expose her,' She thought to herself. She continued walking out of the classroom until she was in the busy hallway. The students seemed to all rush past her as they eagerly ran out of the building and went home. Shanda took her time walking to her locker, the buses never left early anyways so there was never really a rush.

Across the hallway, May patiently waited for Kylie to arrive with details about her deviant plan. May didn't quite know how she got sucked into the whole ordeal, but somehow was determined to stick through it. She had already called her mom, letting her know she was staying after school for a student council meeting. She saw Kylie come running towards her from down the hallway; her run was not hard to miss.
"I figured it out. Did you call your mom?" Kylie immediately asked. "Yeah I did. Do you even know where Ben is right now?" May asked, not believing her plan was flawless. "The buses take off in exactly ten minutes from now, so we don't have much time. We can't just follow him looking like this; he'll recognize us easily. So I'm going to get us disguises and you are going to find out what bus he rides." Kylie explained.

"I don't even know where he is. How do you expect me to find out what bus he rides?" May complained. "May, we don't have much time. Figure it out fast, then come back and meet me at the bathroom by the stairs," Kylie ordered. May sighed deeply, and then stomped away following Kylie's orders. Already she could tell Kylie didn't quite have the whole plan fully organized. Nevertheless, she walked out of the school building and went bus peeking inside to find Ben. Several people stared at her like she was crazy, but she could already sense something crazier was about to happen. Once she found out what bus he was sitting in, she ran back into the school building and towards the bathroom by the stairs. Kylie was already standing there with a pile of clothes in her hand.

"What took you so long? Hurry, we don't have much time. Here's your disguise and this one is mine," Kylie said, handing her a pile of dark clothing that rattled as she picked it up. "Kylie, where the hell did you get this from?" May questioned, holding the clothes far away from her body. "I got them from the lost and found. Stop asking questions, otherwise we'll miss the bus," Kylie answered. She got tired of waiting and irritably pushed open the bathroom door and rushed inside. May followed behind, walking at a quick pace towards the bathroom stalls. Both girls rushed inside a stall to change. Kylie came out of the stall first, and then waited for May.

Hesitantly, May walked out of the bathroom wearing loose black pants with chains and zippers all over it. At the top half section of her pants, she had suspender-like straps dangling down her legs, making it hard for her to walk. In addition, she also had a pair of handcuffs attached to both frontal belt loops. She wore a long sleeve black shirt with frilly little laces on all ends of the top and white lacing down the center of the shirt. Kylie stared at her quite amazed, who didn?t think she was actually going to wear it.
Kylie was wearing a blue knitted beanie that covered up the majority of her hair. She also wore a long oversized shirt that she was practically swimming in, along with long dark baggy jeans, which pretty much fell if she didn't hold on to it.

"I see you already put on the makeup," Kylie said, noticing May?s dark heavy eyeliner, crimson colored lipstick, and her pale white powered cheeks with a hint of a rosy accent. "Kylie, this is crazy. I mean look at you. You're wearing a G-Unit t-shirt." May complained once again. "You can complain all you want in the bus. We better get out of here fast. The buses should be leaving right now," Kylie suggested packing everything into her backpack. "He rides Bus 18." May told her. Kylie nodded her head and the two of them both rushed out of the bathroom. A nearby boy stared at them as they came out. His face turned sour as he saw what he thought to be a boy and a girl both coming out of the bathroom together.

The girls came dashing out of the school building, plowing open the front doors. They both nearly jumped down every third step, rushing their way towards the bus. The second their foot met the sidewalk; they heard the sounds of the bus engine roar. "Shit!" Kylie shouted. "We still have time. His bus is that way." May pointed to the left, with the buses facing towards the right direction. The girls ran for their lives down the empty sidewalk to Bus 18. Just as they reached it, the bus started to take motion. Both girls' jaws nearly dropped four inches in fear. Without thought, Kylie swiftly chased after the bus refusing to miss it. When she got close enough, she pounded as hard as she could on the bus door hoping the bus driver would stop.

However, it didn't work. The bus driver didn't seem to notice. Once again, she continued to chase after the bus, pounding on the door with each open opportunity. Kylie was exhausted and near collapsing, her fatal lungs had now been depleted of all oxygen. Miraculously, the bus finally came to a halt leaving her heart free to beat once again. The bus door swung open and Kylie stepped inside, nearly gasping for air. She stood there for a moment, allowing herself to regain her breath.
"Do you ride this bus son? I?ve never seen you on here before," The bus driver questioned her, looking at her like she was a stranger. "Sorry sir, I'm new. I just moved here," She answered. At first she spoke very feminine but later on her voice deepen as she finished her sentence.

"Your voice just cracked. Well, please don't be late next time. I won't stop for you even if you chase the bus," He replied letting her inside. May, who slowly trailed behind, soon stepped into the bus. The bus driver raised his eyebrows at her, surprised to see another late rider. "And who are you?" He asked a bit puzzled. "That's my sister. I'm sorry, she walks slow sir," Kylie replied. The bus driver chuckled and let May pass as well. Both girls hurriedly took their seats in whatever available seat that was left. There was a quite a commotion amongst the passengers of the bus. They all pointed and whispered about their new riders. The girls were too tired and exhausted to even notice or care. They were just relieved to at least be on the bus.

"Hi, I'm Margaret. I like the chains on your pants." A young girl sitting next to May greeted her. "Thanks, I got them on sale at Pet Smart." May replied. The girl chuckled and smiled. "May, we're not here to make friends," Kylie whispered from across the aisle way. May ignored her, refusing to take any more of her orders. "Is that your brother?" The girl asked pointing to Kylie. "Unfortunately yes. He thinks he's a straight up gangster. So... do you know everyone well on the bus?" May curiously asked, hoping she would know Ben. "Not everyone. I'm only in 8th grade, so I don't know too many of the high schoolers or sixth graders well," The girl answered. "Oh, I see. How long is the bus ride usually?" She asked, not wanting stay on the bus forever. "Not too long. I get off at the first stop, then it makes a few rounds about the neighborhood and then into the trailer park," The girl replied.

'No, he couldn't be,' May thought to herself. She kept quiet for the remainder of the bus ride. Every now and then she and Kylie would turn around and look at Ben who sat alone by himself near the back of the bus. She wanted to go sit back there with him, but that would easily blow her cover. Then again, May was pretty much indifferent about the whole situation. She was more ecstatic about the thought of raiding Brendan's room than following Ben home. Nonetheless, Kylie's crazy antics kept her well entertained and her curiosity seemed to grow in wonders of seeing his house.

The bus finally reached the first bus stop, which was an average one story suburban neighborhood with the occasional two story homes spotted off the sidewalks. The girl sitting next to May carefully snuck past her and got off at the first stop. The bus slowly emptied out but Ben still remained seated. The bus door closed and then continued down the long narrow street. After several curves and turns, the bus stopped once again and more and more people got out. Ben still remained seated at the back of the bus, unprepared to ever get out. The cycled continued several times until only a few remnants of students remained. The bus drove down another narrow road and continued down it, exiting the neighborhood. May bit her tongue, she knew where the last stop was going; she just wasn't prepared for it one bit.
"I bet the huge mansion houses are next," Kylie whispered.

The bus continued down the road, and then turned at a huge sign that read, Eaglewood Mobile Park. Kylie's eyes immediately lit up, unaware of what the girl next to May had said earlier. The bus made a slight turn into the gravel road and stopped, opening up the door for the last bus stop. Kylie turned around and saw Ben get out of his seat. She grabbed her backpack and got out of the seat as well. May mimicked her also and the two of them both exited the bus. They walked slowly down the gravel road, waiting for Ben to walk past them. Ben stepped out of the bus and hurried his way past them, leaving them far behind. The girls trotted behind, keeping a long distance apart from each other.
"Kylie, I think we should turn back now. I think we?ve seen enough." May suggested. "May, Ben is nowhere near trailer trash. Don't even get crazy thoughts because I'm not turning back," Kylie answered, quite serious.

The trailer park was fairly small in size. The entire community was gated around the perimeter. There were only four short gravel paths, with homes on each side of the roads. Most of the mobile homes were well kept and looked quite cozy from the outside. A few of the homes did look somewhat rundown along with their jungle-like yards.
Ben continued walking down the gravel path, until he finally reached his home, which was located towards the fence on the last road on the right side. The girls slowly trailed behind, watching Ben walk into his home. Unfortunately, Ben's house was one of those rundown homes. There were weeds all over his yard, the paint was well faded and was peeling off the vinyl, and his garbage cans were overflowing with trash.
"How stereotypical," May said sarcastically. "May!" Kylie grunted.

The girls cautiously walked over toward Ben's house; they were practically standing on the front yard. When no one was looking, they dashed over to the side of his house far away from the garbage cans. However, the stench was so unbearable; the girls had to hold their noses. They tiptoed their way to the nearest window and peeked inside the opaque glass. Ben was walking into his living room, looking slightly upset about something. The dark haired man was sitting on the couch, watching TV. The girls cupped their hands against the glass and tried to listen to what was going on inside the house.

"Oh good, Ben you're home. Could you go get your old man a beer from the cabinet? I want a Jack Daniel's" The man from the couch commanded him.
Ben nodded his head and walked past the kitchen to the cabinet, where his father kept the alcohol. He opened up the cabinet, pulling out the bottle from a vast collection of alcohol. Despite their financial hardships, his father always managed to waste their money restocking the cabinet.

Ben hesitantly walked over to the couch, handing his father the bottle. There were already two other bottles of alcohol lying down on the floor. He also had a pack of smokes and already lit cigarettes sitting on the side table next to the couch.
"Thanks Ben. Go do your homework," His father thanked him. Ben kept a straight face and grabbed his book bag off the floor and walked through the tiny little hallway over to his room. Inside, his home was relatively small. There was a small little hallway that led to the two bedrooms, a bathroom, and the kitchen; the living room and dining room all merged into one large room. The girls stared at Ben's lazy father who sat down on the couch, drowning himself in one bottle after another.
"I feel so sorry for him." May whispered. "I guess this is why he didn't want anyone over. I would be embarrassed too," Kylie admitted. "I think we?ve seen enough. Let's go home now," May suggested.

"No, just a little longer. Let's go peek in Ben's bedroom window," Kylie refused. May sighed deeply, and then followed Kylie over to what window she thought was Ben's. "He's going to see us." May complained. "Well, don't stick your head in the center," Kylie argued. The girls looked through the window once again. Ben was sitting down on the floor with his math book, notebook, calculator, and pencil. His math book was open and he appeared to be absorbed in his homework. From under the bed, came sounds of ruffling and scratching. A small brown and black dog emerged from underneath and came to greet Ben. "Jingles, I can't play with you right now. I'm doing homework," Ben said to his little Border Terrier. The dog started tapping on his leg, wanting to play.

Ben placed his pencil down and started playing tug-o-war with his dog's chew toy. After he got tired of playing with him, he went back to doing his homework. Ben continued to do his homework, while the girls carefully watched him from his bedroom window. They had become quite found of his bedroom. The room garnished with blue carpeting, blue star wallpaper and band posters. The room was sort of Ben's retreat, from the chaos outside his bedroom door.

It wasn't long before then when the front door started to rattle. The door swung open with the sounds of heels clicking against the floor.
"Ben, dinner time!" A woman's voice called him. Ben dropped his pencil and closed his book, and then walked out of his room and into the living room. The girls made their way around the house and once again stared through window they used earlier before.
There was a woman with dark brown hair wearing a rather revealing nurse uniform. She held a brown paper bag, which she soon placed down on the table. Ben walked over to the brown bag and grabbed out two 99-cents double cheeseburgers from the bag. Once Ben got his food out of the bag, the woman took the bag and tossed it at Ben's dad sitting on the couch.

"Here's your Big Macs," She said rudely. "What the hell was that for honey?" Ben's father questioned her. "What is that? Your second bottle this afternoon?" She said quite disgusted. "It?s my third one, but I'm telling you I plan to quit," He answered.
Ben kept quiet disregarding the two of them. He held his cheeseburger disgracefully in his hand, chewing on it ever so slowly. It looked almost painful to eat, with the ketchup oozing from it and falling straight down on the plate, like a bloody cut.
"You're never going to quit James. You're never going to do anything around here. You're a lazy ass drunk. You got fired from your old job years ago and never once have you bothered to even look at the classifieds," The woman continued to argue.

More ketchup fell straight down on Ben's plate. He started to get antsy at the mess that was forming on his plate and on his fingers. His father set his Big Mac onto the couch and then got up from his seat.
"I never got fired from my old job. I got laid-off. I get my check in the mail like everyone else," His father argued back. "Old habits never die, James. Go take a look in the mirror, because you look like a total slob. You never once change your clothes," The woman complained.
More ketchup fell straight down on the plate. Ben held onto the burger tighter. A loose pickle squeezed its way out of the burger, falling straight onto the plate. Ben took another bite, chewing slowly on the tattering meal.

"Ben, go to your room!" His father ordered. "But, mom I didn't finish eating," Ben complained, both pieces of meat slipped between the bun and landed straight down on the plate. His father gave him the eye and Ben mournfully got out of his seat and walked into his room, gently closing the door behind him. Kylie immediately left her viewing location and walked over to Ben's bedroom window. May stayed behind and watched both parents argue.
"That boy and his tight pants, whiny music and his dumb little mutt," His father said shaking his head. "Maybe if you weren?t such a lousy father you would actually spend time with him," His mother retorted. "Excuse me! I do spend time with him, Miss-play-doctor-all-day," His father disagreed.

"At least I actually make a living around here. And if you consider watching a TV show with your son as quality time, well then you are a crappy ass father. Look at yourself; it's no wonder why he never brings anyone over. James, we have the worst house in the neighborhood, we practically are the trailer park. I can't keep living here forever; this just isn't going to work out," Ben's mom began to lecture him. "I'd like to see you actually leave. Why don't you go take off with one of your clients then?" His father taunted. "You asshole! The only reason I'm still with you is for Ben. If I seriously had the money I would leave now and take Ben and the dog with me," His mother argued.

"What the hell is that?" His father asked, pointing at the kitchen window. "What the hell is what?" She asked a bit confused. "Over there, by the window... I swore I seen a girl's face appear," His father explained. "Don't tell me you're smoking that? No woman will come here peaking in our window for you," His mother joked. "No seriously, I saw something. I'm gonna go check it out," James declared. May quickly ducked and tipped-toed her way towards Kylie. She grabbed her shoulder and pulled her away from the window.

"Kylie we have to leave now! Ben's dad saw me!" May panicked. "May, oh my god! How could you? Ben looks so cute when he?s sad," Kylie complained. The light from the front door soon turned on; the girls could hear the doorknob turn from the inside. Immediately the girls ran for their lives in the opposite direction. They headed for the nearest bush and hid in the neighbor's backyard until Ben's father went back inside. After that, the girls got on the first taxi they saw passing the main road from outside the trailer park.

The girls got inside the taxi and rode it straight to May's house. It was already dark outside and it was just their luck that the taxi driver didn't have a watch or clock on him. Inside the taxi cab, a tinted window separated May and Kylie from the driver as they both changed in the backseat into their normal clothing. The cab finally reached May's house and May cautiously exited the vehicle. She sluggishly walked up to the door, holding her head in fear of what her mother would say. Just as her hand touched the doorknob, the door immediately pried open, her mother standing on the opposite end. Things didn't look good for May one bit; her mother looked furious as she grunted angrily at her teenage daughter.
"Where have you been, young lady?" Her mother demanded the moment she set eyes on her.

May bit her tongue, she was speechless and scared. On top of all that, Brendan was standing inside her house; she was even more shocked to see him there. Before she could even answer, her mother immediately charged at her.
"Don't tell me you went to a student council meeting. Do you know what time it is? It's 6:45; your meeting should have ended three hours ago. I called the school and they said there was no meeting today, can you explain that?" Her mother questioned her. "I went to a friend's house," May answered, closing her eyes frightened by what her mother would say back. "What friend? I called Shanda and you weren't there. May, don't lie to me; please don't lie to me. If you want to go somewhere after school that's fine; you just have to let me know exactly where you are going and when you will come home," Her mother began to lecture her.
|
| |
Created: 10.28.2008 - Updated: 10.28.2008
"May, I don't like liars. I honestly, don't like liars. I don't know why you think it's okay to lie to me lately. You think I don't know about you going to homecoming? It's pretty hard not to know when a picture of you dancing appears in the Harven Herald. Now please tell me where you were and if you went to a friend's house, why didn't one of their parents drive you home?" Her mother questioned her once again. Her voice was quite intimidating, so string quenching that it made you want to scream. "I'm sorry; I shouldn't have lied to you. I should have called you and told you the truth. I should have told you I would stay longer than normal. I'm sorry mom, please forgive me," May begged, falling prey to her level.

"May, I'm not going to discuss this further. You're grounded! No TV, music, video games, computer, staying after school or any other of these fun activities. You will come straight home and do your homework and when I come home you will help me with dinner, then you go back to your room and study for the rest of the night. I want this girl's phone number; I'm going to call her parents. I hope you ate and did your homework there, because there are dishes waiting to be cleaned and a bathroom that needs to be cleaned afterwards. I also think you owe Brendan here an apology. He came here to ask you a question, but apparently you aren't ready for it," Her mother ordered her.
May was out of breath, she felt herself wrapped up in too many things at once. She felt like collapsing on the floor, but she couldn't. She walked over towards Brendan, who apparently didn't look quite upset.

"Yes, I will," She whispered into his ears, and then smiled at him. Brendan smiled back and then pretended to look upset to fool May's mother. "Brendan, I'm sorry for putting you into all this trouble." May apologized. "May, you should really listen to what you mother has to say. I'll talk to you tomorrow at school. Good night," He said softly. Then he waved at her, leaving May free and vulnerable to her mother's punishment. "May, there are dishes that need to be clean; get started. And before that, I need you to write down that friend's phone number. Oh and from now on, you will be not be allowed to call anyone on your cell phone other than me and your father. Don't even try erasing the history because it shows up on the bill," Her mother reminded her.

May wrote down Kylie's phone number on a piece of paper, which she had somehow managed to get during the time she sat down with her in math class. Then she followed her mother's orders by scrubbing the dishes, cleaning the bathroom, and going straight to her room to study. It was already nine o'clock and she still hasn?t finished her homework. She was starving to death and dared not to raid the fridge for something to eat. Her desk was now empty, with the computer taken away from her table. She walked over towards her bed and cried, burying her face beneath the pillows. She had never thought a simple little outing would lead to all this chaos. Peer pressure had gotten the best of her and now she was suffering from the consequences. She rubbed her damp eyes, which was now a black lagoon filled with the heavy liner she had on earlier. They all seemed to run down her cheeks like a leaky faucet.

She got off the bed and walked over to her mirror and stared at the reflective glass. Her eyes were all swollen from the tears and her cheeks were streaked black from the running makeup. She gazed up into the mirror and stared at it closely. In that mirror she saw Ben. In a way he was much like herself, suffering deep inside from her parent's judgment. He probably had lots of independence if he chose to do so, but lacked the proper parenting, which she could no longer take. She somehow wished she were just able to trade it all with him for only a day. Let him experience good food and parents who truly care about you and she in exchange could feel his pain. Underneath those black-clouded skies, there was a ray of hope; a ribbon in the sky to let her know everything would be okay. But for now she was the apple of her mother's eyes, with the soles of her shoes bounded to the very grounds of her home.
