{This is my submission to the 2007 Halloween Showcase!
It is a modernised adaptation of the infamous Urban Legend, Bloody Mary.

Callum Daly grinned creepily at his shaking girlfriend, Mary Miller. His green eyes gleamed.
?Come on, you?re not scared of some wimpy Halloween story, are ya?? He jeered.
?N-no!? She cried, indignant. ?Let?s just find this stupid grave and get out of here. God, Callum, you?re so creepy!? She rolled her bright blue eyes at him, trying to lighten the mood.
He ruffled her blonde hair with his hand, chuckling to himself. He stared at her, she was really trying to keep her cool. ?Babes, we can just go home if you wan-?
?Now you?re the one wimping out.? She punched him playfully.
?I?m not?? He sighed. ?God, Mary, you?re so stubborn!? He joked back at her.

They walked in silence for a bit, not wanting to admit how terrified they both were. Occasionally, one would trip over an astray rock, knowing it had probably tumbled down from a mouldy headstone. The dates were getting older, and older, and older, until there were no graves left at all.

?No Mary Worth. Oh, well. Let?s go home!? Mary chirped cheerfully.
?Hold on, there?s a corner here!? Callum pointed to the nook between the forest of trees. ?Maybe there?s more graves around there.?

He took off, running around the corner.
Mary groaned. ?Cal-lum!? She followed him, noticing the creepy lights strung through the thick leaves of the trees. ?Who the hell puts lights up in a cemetery?!? She called after her boyfriend.

It had only been an hour or so before that they had been at their friend?s Halloween party. Everyone was having a great time and "The Monster Mash" was blaring on the sound system.
?Let?s tell spooky stories!? The ever excited Kimmy grabbed a torch, turning off all the lights in the decorated living room.

?We?ll begin with the story of Bloody Mary?? Kimmy adopted a sinister voice, husky and deep.

?She lived deep in the forest in a tiny cottage and sold herbal remedies for a living. Folks living in the town nearby called her Bloody Mary, and said she was a witch. None dared cross the old crone for fear that their cows would go dry, their food-stores rot away before winter, their children take sick of fever, or any number of terrible things that an angry witch could do to her neighbours.

Then the little girls in the village began to disappear, one by one. No one could find out where they had gone. Grief-stricken families searched the woods, the local buildings, and all the houses and barns, but there was no sign of the missing girls. A few brave souls even went to Bloody Mary's home in the woods to see if the witch had taken the girls, but she denied any knowledge of the disappearances. Still, it was noted that her haggard appearance had changed. She looked younger, more attractive. The neighbours were suspicious, but they could find no proof that the witch had taken their young ones.

Then came the night when the daughter of the miller rose from her bed and walked outside, following an enchanted sound no one else could hear. The miller's wife had a toothache and was sitting up in the kitchen treating the tooth with an herbal remedy when her daughter left the house. She screamed for her husband and followed the girl out of the door. The miller came running in his nightshirt. Together, they tried to restrain the girl, but she kept breaking away from them and heading out of town.

The desperate cries of the miller and his wife woke the neighbours. They came to assist the frantic couple. Suddenly, a sharp-eyed farmer gave a shout and pointed towards a strange light at the edge of the woods. A few townsmen followed him out into the field and saw Bloody Mary standing beside a large oak tree, holding a magic wand that was pointed towards the miller's house. She was glowing with an unearthly light as she set her evil spell upon the miller's daughter.

The townsmen grabbed their guns and their pitchforks and ran toward the witch. When she heard the commotion, Bloody Mary broke off her spell and fled back into the woods. The far-sighted farmer had loaded his gun with silver bullets in case the witch ever came after his daughter. Now he took aim and shot at her. The bullet hit Bloody Mary in the hip and she fell to the ground. The angry townsmen leapt upon her and carried her back into the field, where they built a huge bonfire and burned her at the stake.
As she burned, Bloody Mary screamed a curse at the villagers. If anyone mentioned her name aloud before a mirror, she would send her spirit to revenge herself upon them for her terrible death. When she was dead, the villagers went to the house in the wood and found the unmarked graves of the little girls the evil witch had murdered. She had used their blood to make her young again.

From that day to this, anyone foolish enough to chant Bloody Mary's name three times before a darkened mirror will summon the vengeful spirit of the witch. It is said that she will tear their bodies to pieces and rip their souls from their mutilated bodies. The souls of these unfortunate ones will burn in torment as Bloody Mary once was burned, and they will be trapped forever in the mirror.?
Once she finished the story, they all shuddered. Even though they had already been told the story dozens of times before, the way Kimmy had told it made it almost believable.
?And Bloody Mary, or Mary Worth, as she was really called, is buried right here. In our cemetary.? She finished.
Callum had immediately volunteered that Mary and himself would go and find the grave and take photos of it.
?If we don?t find a grave, you have to?? Callum cut off, thinking of an appropriate torture.
?Eat six worms from my dad?s garden.? Jamie laughed.
Kimmy bit her lip, pulling a face. ?Deal.?

Callum stared at the headstone. It couldn?t be! He bent down and traced the words. This was wrong. Kimmy must be playing a joke on them. They'll probably get back to the party to find everyone in stitches. What a horrible joke!
He suddenly felt angry, his blood boiling with the insatiable urge to kill.

A knife began to float from the soil, heading straight up until it was even with his nose. With a malevolent grin, he grasped the handle.

?Callum?? Mary called out to him again. She checked her watch. 11:34pm. It was getting late. ?Callum, this isn?t fun-?
She stopped dead in her tracks. Callum was standing in awe in front of the only grave in the little field.
?W-What does it say?? She spoke gently.
?I had to?trace the outline with my finger. But I could make out the name?Mary Miller.? He turned to her and she gasped.

His usually forest green eyes were red, the only gateway to showing his inner torture. Every other pore of his body was filled with malice.

She went to scream, but his agile hand prevented it. Frustrated tears smudged her mascara.
She shouted in her head. ?If I die, any one who speaks Bloody Mary in their bathroom mirror at night three times will die the same way I will!? She repeated it, her shouting getting louder and louder until she spoke out loud, biting Callum?s hand.

He leapt at her, he couldn't let her escape. He plunged the butcher's knife into her stomach.
She shouted the curse at the top of her lungs, saying it again and again until she noticed the knife in her stomach.

She collapsed over him, his emotionless body still. He walked away from her calmly as she gasped for air, her vision fuzzy. The knife slid out, landing on the sparse grass with a light thud.
She fell, making a louder one...

And died.

?Hey, girls. Having some Halloween fun?? Mrs Miller walked into the lounge room, where her youngest daughter and all her friends were playing Truth or Dare.
They all nodded eagerly.
?Well, don't forget to eat that pizza and those cupcakes. And don't stay up too late! Sarah, your sister will be home after midnight, so let her in, because I know you'll still be up then. Goodnight, girls.? She smiled, heading back up the stairs.

"Midnight!" Melanie squealed.
?Truth or Dare, Sarah?? Sarah Miller?s other friend, Hannah asked her.
?Tr?Dare.? She grinned.
?Okay?um, I dare you to say Bloody Mary in the bathroom mirror three times.? Hannah giggled.
The girl paused, suddenly petrified. Slowly, she got up and headed towards the bathroom.

?Bloody Mary?Bloody Mary?Bloody Mary.?
