The storm outside raged with a fury announcing the beginning of the fall season. As I practiced my demi-plies, I jumped at the sound of a particularly loud crash of thunder just beyond my bedroom window.

It was raining pretty steadily, pelting loudly against the pane, drawing my attention yet again. I had a recital in a few days, so really should not have let it distract me so. Still, I could not help but stare out into the darkness. I did this for a few moments until a face began to take shape just beyond the window's crosshatched pane.

There! I saw the face again, more pronounced this time. There was someone out there! As I tore out of my room and into the living room, I tried to tell my parents this fact, but they shrugged it off. "There, there, Penny, it was probably just shadows." My father smiled warmly at me, but looked a little nervous himself.

Since they didn't seem to be too concerned, I tried to relax. I sat with my father and made small talk about our day while my mother spoke on the phone with a friend. Until the power went out and the phones died...

It only took my mother a few minutes to locate the large decorative candle and light it, granting us a little brightness in the eerie dark that surrounded what seemed to be my entire world. My father patted my knee reassuringly, knowing I was already spooked. And as we parted for the night, I was able to keep the candle with me after they had retired to their rooms.

But once placed on my tiny desk, the light that illuminated the small room was not enough to quell the rush of fear and trepidation that I felt. I wrung my hands together. What if I saw the face in the window again?

Hearing a noise behind me, I felt as if I were no longer alone and spun to face the same person that I had seen outside of my window. Only this time, he was inside of my room - with me!

So startled I was at first that I could not do anything except stand there, panting in fear, breath taken away. He was obviously male and he said four words to me: "It is time, Persephone." I shut my eyes and began to scream in absolute terror. I did not see the lights flicker back on.

My mother and father charged into the room where I looked around to see that I was alone. But I had not imagined the man there with me! He had been real! Hadn't he? "Penny? What's wrong?" My father queried, eyes wide in alarm at my scream. I explained about the man and the words he had said. "How did he know my name?" My father's face turned pale and he motioned for me to sit in the chair at my desk.

As I sat, legs still rubbery from the encounter, my father took a deep breath and said, "Penny, your full name is Persephone. We are your foster parents. This is going to be a little hard to take in, but it's all truth that I will share with you now as I tell you about your mother and father." I stared in shock and disbelief. All these years, and they weren't my real parents??

"Come." My father pulled me to my feet and over to the four paintings that hung on my wall. "These are your birthright pictures, given to you by your mother before she sent you to us so many years ago. They represent the four seasons, of which you will have a large hand in aiding. The presence of the man in your room can mean only one thing -your mother has died." He sat me on my bed and began the story of my heritage.

"You see, long ago, there was a young woman named Persephone, your mother. She was carefree and beautiful and loved nature. Along with her mother, Demeter, they kept the earth green and alive."
|

"One afternoon as Persephone was lounging by a pond, a stranger approached her. He was Haides, ruler of the underworld. He was the father of death and so Persephone was both curious and afraid at his presence. Was it her time so soon?"
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
"But Haides wasn't there to take her soul with him. No, he had watched Persephone from afar and wanted her as his own wife. So he approached her with one thought in mind - kidnapping her and stealing her away to the underworld."
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
"Persephone tried to refuse and fought, struggling with Haides, but he was too strong, too powerful and overcame her, stealing her away from her mother. He made her his bride."
|

"Demeter was angry and upset when she had learned of her daughter's kidnapping. But she did not know whom had taken her, so she visited Zeus, father of many of the god and goddesses, for help."
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
"At first he refused to help, as Haides was strong and powerful, but when Demeter refused to let any green plants grow, and people started to starve, he took pity and agreed that she could have her daughter back as long as she had not eaten any food there."
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
"But Haides knew of this and so he had convinced Persephone to eat a couple of pomegranate seeds. This bonded her to him. She was not allowed to leave permanently. Instead, she could stay only six months out of the year. She returned to her mother mid-march, bringing in the first green days of spring. That's why she was known as the goddess of spring"
|

"When they had a child, a daughter, they were overjoyed, but also troubled. The creatures of the underworld grew jealous and it was dangerous for the little one. So they enlisted the aid of two human mortals. Your mother and I. We were given the task to raise you until it was time for you to take Persephone (your mother)'s place. I can only assume that the man you saw in your room was your guardian. He would take up the place of Haides and protect you for six months out of the year as you lose your mortality and release the earth from the bountiful grip of spring and summer."

"If my mother is dead, where is her body? Will I never see her?" It made me sad to think that I would never see the woman who gave birth to me. "Just look up in the sky, to the east you will see a constellation at the dawn of the morning. That's where your mother will be."
|

When my foster mother started crying, I felt terrible. I had to leave them? It was fall, which meant that I would have to take my true mother's place now. But could I leave them - the people who had given me love and a home for so long? I didn't think I had a choice. I pulled my foster mother into a warm hug and told her she would always be my mother.

I slowly stepped outside of the backdoor and made my way to the yard where I expected the man to be waiting for me. But instead, I heard a loud grinding as if stones were being moved and stared in shock and awe as a large hole opened up in the ground. Terrified, I ran back inside. I would try again tomorrow when it was light outside.

As soon as the sun lit the sky the next morning, I bundled up, bid my parents one last farewell, and went to explore the large hole. It was still there so I crept close to the edge, staring downward. A large gust of wind blew against me, pushing me forward and it almost felt as if I had been pushed by two hands. Down I went, but it was over in minutes.

I blinked to find myself in a large room, the pale man from before standing beside me. In front of me was a bed and I knew somehow that this would be my new home.

"Hi, I'm Penny." I figured I might as well be nice to the guy since I would be here for six months or so. He said nothing at first, just stood silently studying me.
|

"Greetings. I am Aion." His eyes were so clear I felt as if I were staring into twin marbles. "I am your protector, my lady." He motioned around us. "This is your home for the next few months. If you need anything, anything at all, I am at your service."
|

"I don't suppose I could return home?" I inquired, hope-filled. He shook his head negatively. "You shall stay here and become my wife." "What?" I exclaimed, face contorting into anger. "I never agreed to anything like that! I will not! And this isn't my home!"
|

With a blink of the eye, I was in my own bedroom. Only it wasn't. It was much, much larger and filled with more furniture than I had owned back home. It was a clever mock-up with a full walk-in closet and everything I probably would need. This Aion guy was trying to be accommodating. "Does this please you better?"
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
"It's a start, but I think I'd rather just go back home. You don't need me. And if you don't return me, when I do return, I'll hide and never come back." I knew I was being a baby and could see the pain in Aion's face as I said the words. "You cannot do that, my lady."
|

"If you do, the winter months shall not end. The plants and trees that feed mankind will die. You will end the lives of most humans. Do you really want that to happen?"
|

I turned away from him. How could I marry a stranger? One I didn't love? The predicament seemed so unreal to me. I just wanted to curl in a ball and wish everything away. I felt his body draw closer to mine as he leaned in to my ear and whispered, "I can give you some time, if you need it." And he did.
|

A week went by before I saw Aion again. He joined me on the bench in my room so we could talk together. I took a deep breath and turned to him. "Look, this is all a little strange and quite frightening to me. Can I ask you a favor?" He nodded. "Can we please get to know each other first? I know Haides probably didn't give my mother a chance, but I'm begging you to do this for me?"
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
Aion thought for a long moment and finally nodded. So the courtship began. He spent many days with me, talking and just spending time together. His world was so different from the one I had known, and it frightened me. The darkness, the death. So he abided with me in my room more and more until we never left it.

After time had passed, a month or so, I felt as if I knew Aion fairly well. I liked him. A lot. I could see myself falling for him, but first things first - I had to get completely and totally comfortable with him. After all, he was not a mere mortal man. It became normal for us to embrace. And when he kissed me for the first time, I could not believe how it made me feel - so alive, so powerful. It felt right.

One day, Aion and I sat on the bench in my room as we usually did to start the day and held hands. But almost instantly, we found ourselves no longer alone and broke apart. Standing before us was a ruggedly handsome man and I could feel power emanating from within him.
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
We stood to our feet and Aion grasped my hand protectively as the stranger stepped closer to us. He smiled at me and nodded as if in approval. "Greetings, I am Hermes. You must be Persephone's daughter?" I nodded and Aion, obviously struggling against being polite to this fellow, snapped, "What do you want, Hermes?" Hermes gave Aion a condescending look and replied, "I have been sent with a message to you, Aion. You are requested to speak with Haides. Now." He waved his hand and Aion disappeared as quickly as Hermes had appeared.
|
| |

Hermes sat on the bench and asked me to join him, so I did. Looking at him, I could see how one could become attracted to him, but not me. I realized with a start that my heart was taken now. He looked at me and said, "You are very beautiful, Persephone. Just like your mother."
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
And then his next words startled me. "I can take you away from here. You never have to worry about returning if you do not want that. Come with me and be my bride and you will have whatever your heart would desire the most." I turned to stare at him in disgust. "No thanks. I have what I need here." I stated plainly. As soon as I said the words, he disappeared. Moments later, Aion appeared and I stood, letting him hold me a few moments.
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
"I apologize, my dear. I hope that Hermes did not mistreat you in any way?" His eyes grew stormy and I realized he felt the same for me as I did for him. "Nah." I replied, "And I've made my mind up. I'll be your wife." "Truly?" His face lit up with joy and I could not help but smiling. "Yeah, as long as you keep Hermes away from me, that is." I added, but with a weak grin.
|

But that was to prove harder than a mere promise as I was kidnapped in the middle of my sleep cycle a few weeks later. Kidnapped just like my mother had been.
|

When I woke the next morning, I found myself in a strange room and a strange bed. It was not the pseudo-room I had grown so used to, but instead it was another place. When the kidnapper revealed himself, I was angry. "Take me back!" I snapped, fists curling.
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
"I cannot do that. You are mine now and belong to me." Hermes smirked lightly and then disappeared, leaving me trapped in the new room. No doors, no windows, just like my other prison; the one I had grown to tolerate.
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
Days went by and I grew bored. I sat in the shift that had been given to me by Aion and sulked. I wanted to go back. I missed Aion. And what would happen to the world? Would the plants shrivel up and die if I was not returned in March? Would spring cease to be because of this?
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
Finally, I could not take it anymore and stood, fuming. Frustrated and upset, I looked up to the ceiling and screamed, "AION!" That was all it took.
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
Aion appeared in the room with me and I would have run into his open and awaiting arms except Hermes also appeared, stepping protectively in front of me - in front of his prize. "Not so fast, Aion." He winked at him. "She is now mine. I have claimed her from you."
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
"You know you cannot do this, Hermes." Aion's voice was deadly and low. He stepped up to Hermes and I knew a confrontation was about to take place. But the moment Aion's fist pulled back in preparation for an attack, the surroundings instantly changed. We were elsewhere.
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
An old man stood before us, glowering at the two men. The place was bright and light-filled and I wondered where we had been sent. "Hermes, Aion. I expected more from you both." His voice boomed, echoing throughout the area. "Stooping to kidnapping and scuffling like mortals. This is not how you are to act! Haides yes, but not you both."
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
"But he should not have exclusive rights to her..." Hermes began as Aion stated angrily, "She is mine! She was given to me by her father!" Zeus held up his hand and silenced them both.
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
He turned to me, staring at me kindly and stated, "Let us leave it up to Persephone." He smiled warmly and queried, "Whom do you choose, my child?" I stared at the arrogant, cocky face of Hermes and the sweet, loving face of Aion. It was not a difficult decision to make.
|
| |

"Aion. I choose Aion."
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
Hermes' angry cries of "Not fairness, father! Aion cast a spell upon her!" were silenced as he began to get chewed out by Zeus upon our exit. I smirked. Hopefully he got what he deserved.

It was shortly afterwards that Aion and I married.
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
As he took me to his room that would now be my own, Aion promised to always watch out for me, protect me, and never let anyone take me from him again. But it was the first of March. That meant I would have to leave him within a couple of weeks. Would I be strong enough? I had to - spring's arrival depended upon it.
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
And when spring came in roaring like a lion, Aion delivered me back to my old house with a promise that he would see me in six months time. He kissed me tenderly, full of love and promise, and bid me to not forget him.
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
As I watched him leave, my heart was split. Part of me was happy. I was married to an incredible man. No, more than a man. And part of me was sad because I would be away from him for so long. But I knew as the first raindrops of spring hit my face that it would not be permanent. I would see my Aion again some day.
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
And I did. And the next spring, as I arrived at my foster parent's home yet again, I was not alone.
|
| |
Created: 04.15.2008 - Updated: 04.15.2008
Along with the new buds on the trees and blooms on the flowers, I had my own daughter to hold and watch grow. She would replace me some day as well and I would become a star in the sky, shining down upon the earth, watching with pride. But I promised her in the meantime that, unlike my mother, I would play a part in her life. And just like her mother and her mother's mother, we named her "Persephone" which meant "Spring Eternal".
The End
