Previously on 'The Caliente Affairs', In 'Part 8', Dina decided she couldn't have a baby knowing it might be Ed's & Alex tried to kiss Dirk whilst Don finally found out Nina was pregnant. In 'Part 9' Dirk Dreamer turned to Orlando for advice. After confessing to him about what had happened, Dirk called Meadow over & when she arrived he told her what Alex had tried to do to him. Shocked & annoyed, Dirk tried to comfort Meadow & the two shared a hug. Meanwhile, Darren told Cassandra he'd found a buyer for his artwork. When she found out he wasn't going to put the money towards their wedding but towards Dirk's college fund she knew she'd have to work hard to persuade Dirk to not let his dad waste the money on him. Clueless of her scheme Dirk finally let down his guard and welcomed Cassandra into his heart.

Chapter One: "No Way Out"
Christmas had sneaked up on Dina Caliente rather quickly. It only seemed like last week her sister was throwing her out of their old house on Middle Road for cheating on Mortimer... And now she'd done it again. Except this time she was pregnant and she didn't know who the father was. It didn't matter, Dina thought to herself as she woke up early and quietly went downstairs. Today Dina was going to have a termination and no-one but Nina would ever have to know that she was pregnant.

Speaking of Nina, she had had her own troubles with a pregnancy. After Don Lothario found out about it he started arguing lots about how he wasn't ready to raise a child yet. The two were barely on speaking terms and the atmosphere in the house was very uneasy. Of course, simple-old Mortimer Goth didn't have a clue about what was going on right under his nose. Dina was surprised he wasn't suspicious but every time she saw him he was either on the phone or not home at all. With all of her problems she hadn't even had the time to think about what he might have been up to. "You're up early." Dina said, worried that Nina was going to find out why she was up early herself. "I could say the same for you, what's up?" She asked. "I... I really don't want to talk about it. But trust me, when I come back everything will be okay."
|
| |

"Whoa, when you come back. Where are you going off to so early?" Nina asked stopping to speak with her sister. "It's nothing, just going to solve some of my problems." Dina avoided the truth expertly, or so she thought. "What problems? Does this have to do with your 'tomato'?" Nina asked. Tomato was the code word she and Dina had come up with whenever they wanted to talk about her baby. "Yes." Dina sighed. "Dina, what's wrong?" "I'm sorry Nina, but I just can't go through with it. Not like this, it wouldn't be right." Dina confessed.

Nina placed a hand to her head and tried her best to supress the anger that was suddenly appearing for her sister. "You're not talking about what I think you're talking about, are you?" "It'll be over and done with before dinner." Dina told her sister.
|

"Over and done with! You sound like you're going to play a round of golf or something. Dina, you're actually going to kill your child?" Nina said, frustrated at her sister's decision. "Be quiet! Look, it's barely even the size of a fist yet. And besides I don't want to think about it, just let me go." Dina said walking towards the door.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"You're not going anywhere." Nina said pointing at her sister as if she were pointing at a spoilt child, which is what she felt like Dina acted like sometimes. "Why don't you want to think about it? Is it because in the back of your mind you know this is the wrong way out?" "Of course it's the wrong way out! But apart from telling the truth it's the only option I have." "So you're going to kill your baby just because it might not be Mortimer's?" "Nina don't be stupid, do you really think that a fifty-eight year old man could be the father of a child?" Dina said sarcastically. "Why not? He fathered Alexander when he was forty-five and he's not exactly a geriatric. I mean you two are practically all over each every night." Nina was quick to point out.

"We were, but something's come between us." Dina said as she put a hand on her stomach. "The only thing that's come between you is guilt because you know that getting rid of your child is the wrong thing to do." Nina said.

"I can't talk about this anymore. I'm wrong, but it's the only way out of this mess. Once it's gone everything will be back to normal." Before Dina left Nina reached out one last time to her sister. "From one pregnant woman to another, just please think long and hard about what it is you're giving up." "I have. And in my opinion I could stand to lose a lot more if I go through with having my... Tomato." Dina said as she stopped at the door. "You're not just going to lose your baby if you go through with the abortion, you're also going to lose a sister. Just think about that when you're in the waiting room." Nina said as she walked off to the den.

Dina thought about her sister's threat as she stood at the open front door. Upon coming to a final decision she was just about to leave when Mortimer came down the stairs.

"I thought I heard you down here, where are you going?" He asked puzzled as his wife stood at the front door.

Dina turned around, startled at her husband's appearance downstairs. She looked into Mortimer's eyes and answered his question, "I'm going... Nowhere." She said as she closed the door. "Why don't I make you something for breakfast." Dina offered as a secret apology to him.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"That's a lovely offer but I'm afraid I have to go out this morning." Mortimer said. "You're going out. Where?" Dina asked. "I've got a very important meeting. But don't worry, this should be the last one." Mortimer said cryptically as he began to leave.
|

"You've been out a lot lately, is there something you're not telling me?" Dina asked. "Oh Dina, what do you think? I have another wife in another town! Honestly, you're always so suspicious." Mortimer laughed as he put on a coat and walked out into the early morning sunrise.

She had no right to be suspicious of Mortimer, especially when she was the one keeping secrets. 'No more', she thought as she placed a hand to her stomach. With the other hand she picked up the phone and dialled a familiar number.

Chapter Two: "Let Her In"
Across town, the warm sun shone through Brandi Broke's window as she and Shaun held each other on her bed. They had planned to spend the night together...
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
But they were interrupted when Calvin Broke, the youngest of the three Broke children, refused to go to sleep in his brothers' bedroom and would only settle in Brandi's room. "I can't believe you won't do it." Shaun said as he turned his back to Brandi on the bed. "I can't do it in front of my child he'd know. He's not a little baby anymore." Brandi said as she turned down Shaun's offer of woohoo.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"I forgot it was his birthday today, I suppose you're right in not wanting to have..." "Puppy!" Brandi interrupted. "We don't use the real word in front of the child." She explained. "Oh come on, he's a big boy today. You're going to have to have the talk with him sooner or later." Shaun said, being alarmingly upfront in Brandi's opinion. "Then I'd rather it be later. Also, you don't even live here. What kind of message would I be giving out to him if he knew you only came over for a quick..."
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"Puppy!" Shaun laughed. "You know that isn't just the reason I come over. We are engaged and tonight was supposed to be special. You know I think of you as more than just a quick... Puppy!" Shaun said.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"I know, you wouldn't be engaged to me if you didn't. And you wouldn't be carrying out all this amazing work on my house if you intended to just leave me after you got what you wanted." Brandi said. Shaun had hired builders to renovate the loft so that Beau and Dustin no longer had to share a bedroom. He'd also been painting and wallpapering the living room of Brandi's house himself. "You know I think the world of you and your kids." Shaun said. "And they think the world of you. You've been amazing to them, to us." Brandi said as she and Shaun passionately kissed on the bed.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"That's why I know I can ask you this without wondering if it's too soon." Brandi said. "What?" Shaun asked. "I want you to move in with us and become a full part of this family." Shaun hesitated as he thought about what to say. "Wow, I don't know what to say! It's not that I don't want to, but I'm nervous. Also I'd have to talk with Ed about finding another roommate and..." "Don't worry. You can think about it for as long as you want, but I know everyone would really like it if you came to live here." Brandi smiled. "I'd like it too." Shaun said as he pulled in Brandi for a cuddle. They were just about to kiss...

When Calvin screamed to be let out of his crib. "I bet that woke everyone up!" Shaun said. "He must know it's his big day today." Brandi said as she got up to let Calvin out.

As she held her son, Shaun watched how Brandi gently cared for Calvin. She was an amazing mother and he imagined she would have been a wonderful wife. He knew that one day he'd let her in and get to find out what kind of a wife she was like. Maybe it wouldn't be soon, but he couldn't think of anyone who wouldn't to be with a woman like that?

Chapter Three: "Out Alone"
It was a quarter-to-three on Saturday when Alex was surprised to find Meadow on his doorstep. He brought her up to his bedroom in the loft and the two went inside. "You still haven't told me why you wanted to come right here." Alex said, surprised at how little his chatterbox of a girlfriend was saying. "We needed to be alone." Meadow said as she turned to look out of the window. Alex closed the door and went up behind Meadow, he wrapped his arms around her but she pulled away. "Oh! You said you wanted to be alone." Alex was confused as Meadow looked as if she had just been violated.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"I wanted to talk with you." Meadow said with a slight anger in the tone of her voice. "What's up?" Alex asked, unaware of her conversation with Dirk and of the news he was about to receive.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"I really think it's best if we break up." Meadow said quickly. "Whoa, where did that come from? Are you unhappy about something?" Alex asked in shock.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"I could ask you the same question, but I wouldn't get an honest answer. You know you have a real problem with honesty Alexander Goth and I thought me of all people would have been the one person you could have been honest with. But to go behind my back and speak to, of all people, Dirk about your problems was just a kick in the guts." "You... You've spoken to Dirk." Alex asked as he felt his world beginning to crack and break around him. "We had quite an interesting conversation about what you and him got up to on Thanksgiving." "Let me explain." Alex interrupted, trying to save some of the pieces that were falling down from his perfect world inside. "You don't need to explain anything. You're gay, that's all that matters." Meadow shot at him.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"I'm not gay." Alex said as he looked away from Meadow's judging eyes. "You could at least have the decency to look at me when you're lying. God, why are even lying to me, TO ME Alexander... I thought I was your best friend." Meadow said. "You are my best friend, you're my girlfriend." Alex said as his throat began to form a lump as he held back the tears. "I am not your girlfriend." She said.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"I don't even think I can be your friend anymore." Meadow added. "I'm sorry!" Alex cried. "I don't want you to be sorry I just want you to be honest." Meadow told him. "I... I can't." Alex said as he felt ashamed at what he was being asked to confess. "No-one dislikes you more than I do right now and if you can't even be honest to me then what hope do you have of ever coming out to the people who love you." Alex turned to face Meadow and sighed. "You're right. I'm gay and they're gonna feel exactly the same as you do if they find out." Alex let the tears fall down his face as he confessed to Meadow. "Probably, but you can't keep on pretending. I won't let you."
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"No! Please Meadow, don't tell anyone." "Why shouldn't I? Humiliate you, just like you humiliated me. I think that's justice." Meadow said as she vindictively sneered at Alex. "That's not you, the Meadow I almost fell in love wouldn't do that." "But you didn't fall in love with me, and I think your judge of character is pretty crap at the moment. However, if you had have kissed Dirk, would you have been honest with me?" She hypothetically suggested. "Probably, but I can't say for sure. All I know is I never wanted to hurt you and what I did was stupid." Alex apologised. "It was stupid. I imagine coming out isn't something you want to go through alone." Meadow said.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"You should have thought about that before you went behind my back." Meadow added as she left Alex. She wouldn't be back, he thought, she wanted nothing to do with him now he'd admitted he was gay. He knew she wouldn't tell anyone but he couldn't be sure. She was right though, he didn't want to go through this alone. However, he decided that there was one more person he needed to tell in private before he began to battle with coming out to his family.

Chapter Four: "Growing Together"
The party wasn't huge, but it was only for a toddler and he had no friends of his own so Shaun had invited Ed and Dustin had invited Angela. Whilst Calvin opened presents Shaun had had a word with Ed about what Brandi had asked him to do. Deciding rather sooner than he had anticipated, he tried to get Brandi alone to break the news to her.
|
| |

"Brandi, can I have a word with you in private?" Shaun asked as he watched her pick up Calvin and place him in his feeding chair. "Hold on, let me just get Calvin a bottle." She said. Shaun waited for about a second, he couldn't hold in his excitement any longer. "Let me do it, he better get used to having me around now." Shaun said. Brandi paused as Shaun nodded and smiled. A big smile spread across Brandi's face as she shrieked and hugged her fiance.
|
| |

"You mean it, you want to move in?" She asked. "Of course I do!" Shaun replied. "Oh I'm so happy." "Why? You knew I was going to say yes." "I know, but you might not have." She giggled. "Anyway, don't let me overshadow Calvin's day. We can celebrate on our own later." Shaun suggested. "Oh! You can expect a big puppy tonight." Brandi laughed as she calmed down and resumed feeding her infant.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"Puppy? That's must be the weirdest word I've ever heard to describe..." "Ed!" Shaun interrupted, "Brandi doesn't like to use the real word around the little kid." "He's not a little kid anymore," Brandi said as she picked Calvin up. "He's growing up." "Here mom, let me hold him while you light the candles on the cake."
|

Dustin said as he took Calvin from his mother's hands. As he looked into Calvin's maturing face he was reminded of his dad. He knew that somewhere Skip was watching over all of them and smiling. "Do you know the words Cal?" Dustin asked. "Yeah, Happy Birthday to me!" Calvin started as everyone else joined in.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"Happy Birthday to you." Calvin reached over and instead of blowing air over the candles he blew a raspberry and drooled all over the cake. Everyone laughed as Dustin opened his mouth in shock. "Well I hope none of you actually wanted to eat this cake!" He said. It didn't matter, everyone was having such a great time that no-one minded Calvin had refused to put on his birthday clothes or that Dustin later sneaked outside with Angela to make out in private. Brandi smiled and knew she would look back on this day happily.

Dina got out of the taxi and sighed. She couldn't believe what she had just done.

As she entered the kitchen she thought about what her life would be like now. But her thoughts were interrupted when...

She saw everyone gathered at the dinning table. "Why are you all sitting there?" She asked. "Mortimer's got something he wants to discuss with us all." Nina replied.

"Honey, what's this about?" Dina asked worridly. "I suppose you've been wondering what has been bothering me lately and where I've been travelling off to." He began. "I'm sorry I over-reacted this morning." Dina apologised, hoping she hadn't offended him earlier this morning. "It's quite alright, you do have a reason to be suspicious. I've been keeping things from you, but not anymore." Mortimer began.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
He turned to face Dina and smiled. "I've been negotiating a lot and I've managed to buy a wonderful property on the Pleasantview shore. I want me, you and Alex to move out and live there." He said.
The room was silent. Dina was in complete shock, she had not expected that and was speechless.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"I think that's a great idea Mortimer." Nina was the first to speak. Dina was hurt at her sister's positive reaction but was reminded about their conversation earlier on. "We all know how weird things have been with everyone living here together. I think having a place of your own will be good for... The future." Nina sighed sadly, assuming that Dina was no longer with child. "So, you want me to move out?" Dina asked.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"We can't live together forever. With all things considered maybe this will be for the best." Nina sighed and looked away from her sister. Dina couldn't believe her own sister was abandoning her. She had threatened to but Dina never thought she'd go through with it.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"I know that we've keeping you and Alex out of the loop on most things and I'm sorry." Nina told Mortimer. "I hope we didn't appear to be rude. It's just me and Don are..."
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"Going through a tough time." Don interrupted. "I'm sorry we didn't tell you all before but... Nina and I are expecting a baby." Don said. Nina looked over shocked and a small smile spread across her face. He had had trouble coming to terms with Nina getting pregnant so soon but he thought he was finally ready to accept that he was going to become a father.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"Well congratulations. I suppose my news is welcome then, you two will be able to have the house ready for your new family." Mortimer smiled. Dina was alarmed, she was being driven out of her own home one-by-one. Surely Alexander would object to moving out, Dina thought.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"I trust you don't mind moving so soon again Alexander?" Mortimer asked. "I don't know, I mean Don just spent all that time painting my new room and now I'm leaving." Alex replied.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"I feel a bit guilty." He added. "Don't bother Alex, that room needed painting and I'm sure it won't go unused. Besides, you're family now and we'll need it if you ever come over to stay." Don told him.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"Which you're all more than welcome to anytime." Alex smiled and gazed at Don. When he was younger he had wanted so much to be able to hate him for cheating on his sister but he couldn't help but feel so close to him right now. He hoped Don wasn't kidding about that offer, he thought about coming out to his dad and knew he just might be kicked out of his new home. Don was the first person he came to about his feelings and he had told him then that he wouldn't be annoyed or ashamed if Alex did turn out to be gay. "Thank you." Alex said. Don smiled and assumed he was just being thanked for what he had said but Alex was thanking him for so much more than that. "It's alright. So when will you be moving out?" Don asked.
|

"The removal van won't be here until tomorrow but most of the furniture is brand new so I thought we'd leave tonight." Mortimer smiled at how brilliantly everyone was taking the news. Or had he spoken to soon?
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
"Tonight!" Dina yelled surprised. "I'm sorry, I've sat back and watched up until now but I have to speak my mind. What if I don't want to move? You've made this huge decision without even consulting me and I just..." Dina paused and saw that all eyes were on her. "I'm shocked. That's all, it's shocking." Dina stopped her true feelings from pouring out, knowing that no-one would really care. And she realised that this was what the house had been like for a while. It was divided, and now Mortimer was just doing the honest thing and splitting up the separate parts.
|
| |
Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
But it was Dina who was the person who had to be split down the middle. On the one half she had her new family, her husband and a step-son. She had vowed to love Mortimer in front of God and take in his family (everyone except Cassandra) as her own. She wanted to honour those vows but on the other hand there was Don and Nina.
|

Her sister, her other half. She wasn't just her sister she was her twin. No-one but Nina knew how Dina was feeling sometimes. More so than ever now she had shared her unfaithful secret with her. And Don was a friend who she'd known for what felt like forever. He was once her lover and a part of her still loved him today. How could she expect to just leave one part of her life behind like that? She had already made one big decission today and wasn't capable of making another one. But she knew she didn't have to, she was moving out and both parts knew it was for the best. Nina and Don could prepare for their new family and Dina could finaly commit to Mortimer completely. It all sounded good in theory, but Dina knew that things would never be so simple.

Chapter Six: "Growing Apart"
The day was finally over and thankfully everyone was too tired to argue about sharing a room. Brandi couldn't wait for her extension to be finished so no-one ever had to share a room again. Well, no-one except her and Shaun. They'd be sharing a room forever now, Brandi thought.

Calvin had fallen to sleep straight away. He knew when he woke up he'd be different than before, growing up was magical that way. He just hoped he wouldn't be too different, he never understood the way some people could just suddenly change as a person.

In all her time here Dina had never lit the fireplace. As Alex and Mortimer packed a few things Dina could only stare into the flame and watch it burn.

Created: 07.17.2005 - Updated: 07.17.2005
Why do I feel so cold inside when I'm so close to the flames, she asked herself. She knew of one reason, but decided to blame it on the sudden detachment from her sister. The obnoxiously loud horn of the taxi cab shattered her thoughts as Dina wiped away the tear that she had shed. Why had she cried? She couldn't answer that.

She smiled and hugged her sister goodbye, but it was an empty hug. Nina avoided eye contact and Dina felt like she deserved it.

Stepping inside Don ran up to the door. "Don't I get a hug?" He asked. "Goodbye Don, congratulations on your baby." Dina said as she closed the door shut.

"Thanks, goodbye." Don said, confused at the lack of emotion the two sisters were showing. Something was being kept from him and he didn't like it. Don waved bye but Dina just stared at nothing in particular. If only she could tap into herself and unlock some of the happiness that lay deep inside then everyone wouldn't be so sad. There really was no reason to be sad, it was a mutual parting of ways and a decision which had just been unnecessarily prolonged. Dina knew that eventually she and everyone else would be happy about this, but not right now.

As the car drove off Nina burst into tears and was comforted by Don. Nina thought about her sister's feelings as she cried. Some part of her knew what Dina was thinking about but Nina disagreed, she knew that she would never be happy about this.

"Puppy!" Shaun laughed. "You know that isn't just the reason I come over. We are engaged and tonight was supposed to be special. You know I think of you as more than just a quick... Puppy!" Shaun said.

"I wanted to talk with you." Meadow said with a slight anger in the tone of her voice. "What's up?" Alex asked, unaware of her conversation with Dirk and of the news he was about to receive.
