"Austin Lee Murphy- Austin." He held out his hand.
She took it cautiously. His grip was warm, his palm rough. He was tall and had long dark brown hair with intense deep, dark, blue eyes.
"And your here because....?" She allowed the sentence to trail.

"Because I want you to know that you're the most," He paused for a brief second, "beautiful girl I've ever seen. And I thought I should introduce myself."
'I mean, we should get to know each other. Since you're the girl I intend to marry.' He thought lovingly.
She smiled. Not one of those 'You're such a dufus,' smiles, but a, 'You're cute,' smile. He guessed that was pretty good.

Austin slowly opened his eyes. He cursed that dream for always coming back. He didn't want to remember her- but he did. He quietly hummed the word, "Chantle". He groaned, realizing she was just a figment in the fabric of his dreams now.

"This is insane," muttered Marion, "we should never have done this, Kyla. Not in this storm." Her eyes showed her anxiety as she gripped the steering wheel tightly.
The tunnel of dark trees loomed ahead. As they entered, branches closed over the top of the truck, banging and scraping against it. Her heart was on fire. Her breath short. Then there was a brilliant flash of lightning and a clap of thunder overhead. Kyla screamed and jumped.
Straight in front of them a tree had fallen! The truck skidded down the road, straight into the path of the falling tree.

Time slowed down. Powerless to do anything, Kyla screamed as they hurdled to their doom. The tree fell toward them in horrifyingly slow motion. The tree collapsed. With startling clarify, in a single second that seemed to last forever, Kyla saw every little detail, every vein of every green, damp leaf.
"Mom!" She screamed.
There was a bang, a sickening feeling of falling, and then nothing.
"Mom..."
Darkness. Darkness.

Like lightning Kyla rose from her bed. Bringing her hands to her face she felt warm tears resting on her cheeks. She glanced over at her alarm clock- 9 O' clock. She cursed aloud, remembering her date with Brandon- at eleven.
These dreams (nightmares), weren't helping her much lately, they just made her a nervous wreck.

She crawled out of bed and crept out of her room and saw on the kitchen counter a note from Ren lying there. Ignoring it, she headed for the expresso machine.

As she waited for her expresso, she massaged her face with her fingers. "Why is all this happening to me?" she managed to mutter.

"What ever happen to 'live long', mom?" She yelled, as the phone rang and the expresso machine sounded loudly.
She turned to get her expresso, completely ignoring the phone. Just knowing the answer machine would get it.

He turned off the water and heard slight whimpering noises coming through the walls. Blocking it out, he thought of her again. Her aroma, her beauty, her personality. She was so beautiful- not like most girls he had met; she was genuine.

That night, she was so- distant-looking. She hadn't said much- that is for awhile. All she said really was that she was so stupid to have made her mom do that during a storm. But having someone wth her seemed to make a world's difference. It had seemed so---
"Austin, please get her for me!" Chantle yelled from afar.
Austin groaned, opened the door and entered the nursery.

He stared at his 3 month old baby girls. Emma and Emily. Truth be told he didn't care for either of them. They only had kids to make Chantle happy. He scooped of Emma.
He stared at her. Just simply stared. Emma just stared right back at him, and cooed. Then he just felt sudden anger rise up in him.
"What do you want from me? Huh? What am I suppose to do?! It's not fair! Why Emma? Why!?" Austin found himself yelling at his kid.
|

Created: 01.17.2006 - Updated: 01.17.2006
"That's quite enough, Austin." Chantle growled as she hurried in the room, "And go clean up."
Austin sighed but agreed as he handed Emma to her.
'What's wrong with him.....?' Chantle thought.

After his shower (about an hour later), Austin was reading one of his favorite books. It was a tragic book, about love and death. Funny (in a way), because of a death he had met her. Although, at the time the death had been much more important- of course. Why wouldn't it have been?
|
| |
Created: 01.17.2006 - Updated: 01.17.2006
"What's wrong with you?" Came a concerned yet angry voice.
|
| |
Created: 01.17.2006 - Updated: 01.17.2006
Austin closed his book and said, "Nothing."
"Please don't keep stuff from me. Just tell me." Chantle whined.
"Nothing's wrong with me. Just.." He stated once more.
"Your just not the man I married, that's all. Is it because I wasn't too thrilled over your promotion? Is it because-" She questioned.
At that moment Austin laid his book down on the opposite end table and approached Chantle.
|

"Nothing's wrong with me, Chantle! Can't I just have some- peace?" He snapped. "What do you want from me?!?"
She seemed to think about his angry words for a minute before she spoke. "I want you, Austin, you! I don't want any of your money or things; I just want you!" Chantle cried.
|

For a split second, Austin watched as Chantle wept. Sure, he could understand that how he'd been acting lately wasn't fair- but life wasn't fair either.
Frustrated, Austin shoke his head and headed for his study. And he prayed aloud:

Kyla was currently primping in front of the hall mirror, awaiting Brandon's arrival. She hadn't done much- just simply changed and of course showered.
She sighed; she didn't want to go out with Brandon. But she didn't want to be rude either. I guess, you could say she was cornored. Kyla closed her eyes and allowed her mind to drift- back.
|

White. Everything was white. Where was she? She blinked. And then focused on a figure sitting at the side of her bed.
"Yeah, it's me," her sister replied with a smile. She appeared the same, with her medium lenght brown hair and mysterious, dark brown eyes. Though her face seemed flushed, her eyes strained.

"Where am I?" Kyla asked glancing around the room in confusion.
"In the hospital." Kim replied. "You've been unconscious for about a week. We were so relieved when you woke up briefly yesterday." Her eyes searched Kyla's. "Do you remember?"
Kyla shook her head. "Where's mom?"
|

"Kim, talk to me!" Kyla frowned as pain erupted in her head. She immediately fell back against her pillow.

"Mom's," she paused, her voice shook, and her eyes dropped to where she held her fingers. "...We lost her, Kyla."

"No, it's not true..mom." Kyla screamed as tears streamed down her cheeks.
"Kyla, are you alright?" Brandon said in a hushed tone.
Kyla shook uncontrollably. She couldn't seem to find her voice in all her confusion.
"Kyla, honey?" Brandon whispered.

Kyla's eyes glistened with tears as she sowly lifted her head and met his gaze. "I...I just..." She allowed herself to trail off.
"Maybe, we should cancel our date? Don't think your up to it." He said.

"Brandon, no." Kyla sniffled.
"Kyla, if you don't want to go and if it pains you this much, then you don't have to." Brandon stated as he released Kyla.
"Brandon it's not that! Not at all! I was just reminded of- it doesn't matter. Lets go." Kyla replied quickly placing a fake smile on her face.
Brandon smiled too, and together they left for their luncheon.

Austin studied his surroundings. He was still in his study it was just later- much later. He remembered Chantle's and his short-lived arguement. He had grown crazy living with her. He'd given her everything- his heart, a (beautiful) house, fancy things, even two kids!
Still, nothing he did was good enough for her. He was growing tired of her constant nagging. And anxious for ANY oppurtunity.
Onlay about a month ago they had had a similar arguement- that also, wasn't pleasant.

~*Flashback*~
"..and John was like-" Austin was cut off.
"That's exactly what I wanted to talk with you about. I don't want you talking about your work, when your at home." Chantle said sternly.
"But Chan-" Austin began.
|

Created: 01.17.2006 - Updated: 01.17.2006
"No! I don't care about your work, I care about you!" Chantle snapped- surprisingly.
"Chantle, I...I.."

"..just... Fine be that way." Austin turned his back.
"Real mature, Austin. When are you going to grow up?! You have two babies and a wife that you ignore and neglect! You-" Chantle scolded.
|

"I have a life, whether you like it or not! I have to provide for you and those twerps with everything! Everything, Chantle!" Austin retorted as he turned back around.

"Why don't you just leave then? Have an affair? Huh, why not, Austin Lee Murphy!?!" Chantle screamed.
"Ya know what, I'm going to the bar. And maybe I will leave you!" Austin threatened.
This only caused Chantle to cry harder and louder. Austin stared at her for about two minutes and simply left for the bar- like he'd promised.

~*End Flashback*~
Austin let a sigh escape as he pulled himself up. He hated having to say, 'sorry', but he'd have to; if he wanted to sleep in HIS bed, that is.

"Had an accident." Kyla said quietly, almost as if it were a secret.
"With anybody?" Austin asked.
Kyla suddnely looked up at him, "Yes." For a few seconds she just stood there and then tears started to stream down her cheeks. Stunned, Austin hurried to her side.
As she wept, she continued to speak, "My mom was with me. But-" she paused for a brief moment, "She- she died."
|

Awestruck, Austin fell back with only one thought swirling around in his head: 'What have I done?'
|
| |
Created: 01.17.2006 - Updated: 01.17.2006
Kyla hit the door around midnight. She was tired and not happy with Brandon. First, he had tried to get her drunk, and then he insisted they have a 'little fun'- which went along with the being drunk part. He was such a fool. There was no use in even trying- what was she thinking?
"Have fun?" came Ren's high-pitched voice on the couch.
|
| |
Created: 01.17.2006 - Updated: 01.17.2006
"No."
"Now do you under-" She started.
"Uh-huh." Kyla answered before she could finish.
Ren rolled her eyes at her friend. She couldn't help it that her ex was a dud. Rich, but nonetheless a dud.
"When did you get home?" Kyla asked in a hushed tone.
"Time's not my thing, hun." Ren smiled up at her.
Kyla hated her friends' inability to be serious.
|
| |
Created: 01.17.2006 - Updated: 01.17.2006
"You look tired, Kyla, maybe you should get to bed?" Ren said concernedly as she changed the subject.
"Don't-"
"Now would be great." Ren ordered.
"Fine- yes master." Kyla teased.
"Night, hun." Ren laughed.
"Night." Kyla returned as she casually walked towards her room.
|
| |
Created: 01.17.2006 - Updated: 01.17.2006
The blood drained from Kyla's face. "No," she whispered. It couldn't be true. Kyla's voice rose. "She can't be. Mom can't be dead!"
"I'm sorry," Kim said, her eyes filling with tears, "We had her funeral three days ago.."
Kyla stared, her breathing getting deeper and deeper. "No!" Kyla cried, the pain erupting out of her. Her cry turned into a scream. She couldn't stop it; she didn't want to. She screamed and screamed, only vaguely aware when Kim ran to the door and a nurse came hurrying in. She didn't even feel the prick in her arm.
|
| |

Her scream faded to a whimper and then sleep closed in on her, dragging her back into complete darkness.

Austin blinked and searched the room for any hint of Chantle being there. She wasn't. Not like it mattered- but still. Then, to his utter shock, Chantle burst through the door and walked over to where Austin lay."Get up." She commanded.
Not making any objections, Austin did. "Whats up?"
|
| |
Created: 01.17.2006 - Updated: 01.17.2006
"Whats up? Whats up!? Don't 'whats up' me, Austin! I'm sick of it; I can't stand it any longer!" Chantle yelled.
"Sick of what?" Austin tried to contain himself.
"You! You, Austin, you!" Chantle began to whimper.
|
| |
Created: 01.17.2006 - Updated: 01.17.2006
Stunned, Austin stood there completely silent before he answered. "Your sick of me? Me? What did I do!?" Austin frowned.
Chantle began to cry as she spoke, "Austin, I can't be your little trophy wife or whatever. I just can't."
|
| |
Created: 01.17.2006 - Updated: 01.17.2006
Chantle continued as she wrapped her arms around Austin's neck, "I feel as if your heart belongs to someone else... That I'm just... just some idiotic woman that you took pity for."
Austin held her. He didn't know what else to say or do. Was he really that expressive?
"Chantle, I love you, just right now, I'm struggling-- internally." Austin half-lyed.
"Austin- I.. I want to believe you- but I can't." Chantle said as she pulled away from him.

Kyla had woken up early the following morning to go to the "Mart"-- that had everything, except for a bathroom. As she browsed through the frozen foods section, she noticed a fimilar face- or person, either one.
Curious, she inched her way over towards him. Then he uncomfortably turned towards her. Kyla looked down.

They stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity.
"K-Kyla?" He stuttered.

"What do you want from me? Huh? What am I suppose to do?! It's not fair! Why Emma? Why!?" Austin found himself yelling at his kid.

"That's quite enough, Austin." Chantle growled as she hurried in the room, "And go clean up."

After his shower (about an hour later), Austin was reading one of his favorite books. It was a tragic book, about love and death. Funny (in a way), because of a death he had met her. Although, at the time the death had been much more important- of course. Why wouldn't it have been?

She seemed to think about his angry words for a minute before she spoke. "I want you, Austin, you! I don't want any of your money or things; I just want you!" Chantle cried.

For a split second, Austin watched as Chantle wept. Sure, he could understand that how he'd been acting lately wasn't fair- but life wasn't fair either.
Frustrated, Austin shoke his head and headed for his study. And he prayed aloud:
