PART TWO by ThomasMcNab Chapter One: "Call Out" Chapter Two: "You're Welcome" Chapter Three: "Company For The Day" Chapter Four: "Who's That Girl?" Chapter Five: "Play The Fool" Epilogue: "Just The Beginning"
Previously on 'The Caliente Affairs': Dina inquired about taking a paternity test so she could finally find out if her husband Mortimer Goth was the father of her baby, or if it was the result of her affair Ed Wilson. After finding an unlikely friend in the form of Lilith Pleasant, Alex Goth decided to tell his sister Cassandra Goth that he was gay. Though he backed out when it came to it, but Cassandra already sensed Alex was hiding something from her.

Chapter One: "Call Out"
It was almost a month since Nina's accident. Christmas and New Years had come and gone and Dina was beginning to show the tell-tale signs of pregnancy. It was for this reason she'd been avoiding contact with her twin sister. Nina didn't know Dina was still pregnant and Don hadn't told her. Dina didn't want to hide her news, but couldn't deal with the obvious complications that Nina would remind her about. Besides, Nina had just begun trying to get her life back to normal after losing her baby and Dina was anxiously awaiting the results of her paternity test... Or more specifically Mortimer's paternity test. Dina had taken the necessary samples for the test from him without his knowledge. All she needed was proof that her baby and him were related and her worries would be over... Unless of course, her worries were confirmed and the baby wasn't his. Trying to put this all aside, Dina was waiting for a phone call from her doctor.

Around midday it rang. Mortimer was out but his son Alex was at home, off from school because he had complained of a headache and upset stomach. He was in his bedroom so Dina was free to speak about the test results in private.

"What do you mean you need me to come down? What's wrong, I thought you said you could tell me over the phone?" Dina argued as she was informed a few more 'routine' tests needed to be performed. "Well when I get there and have these done you can tell me then, right?" Dina asked.

The doctor confirmed and asked her to come straight away. "Straight away? I might not... Okay, I'll see what I can do. I'll be there soon." Dina said, hanging up the receiver and sighing as she carried herself up the stairs to check on Alex. She was trying to be a model mother lately, on account of her own impending birth. She had told Mortimer he could go out for the day whilst she kept an eye on Alex. Approaching his room she hoped he was asleep so maybe she could sneak out without anyone knowing.

As she quietly opened the door Alex's smiling face greeted her. Dina's face was less than happy, but she faked a smile anyway. "How are you feeling?" "Alright, thanks." Alex replied. Seeing him yawn, Dina tried to persuade him to rest.

"Thanks, I might just do that." Alex said. He had already been woken up this morning to initially go to school, but he couldn't stand another day of insults from Meadow and her clique. Almost everyone in his Year knew that Alex and Meadow weren't together anymore, and most of them knew it was because Alex was gay. Meadow had turned from his friend into his worst enemy, something he thought she would never be capable of. But he remembered she had warned him, and now she was spreading his secret around in order to rally sympathy for herself. None of his family knew though, in fact he had yet to tell them he wasn't dating Meadow anymore! So he had faked an illness in order to stay home, hopefully for more than one day. "Do you want me to get you anything, a glass of water?" Dina offered. "I'm fine thanks." Alex said.

As Dina left, Alex reached towards his bedside table to check his mobile phone. He had sent a message to Lilith telling her he was off, she sympathised and offered to collect his homework for him. Alex did actually enjoy school, the learning part anyway. Socially however was a different matter, he had never managed to acquire decent friends since most people saw him as the young kid that skipped a Year. It wasn't as if he hadn't tried, at one point he was hanging with the Goth kids and Meadow's clique all in the space of five days. But when he saw that he couldn't be part of both, he chose popularity instead of sincerity. But by that time it was too late; he had asked Meadow to be his girlfriend in hopes his desires for the same sex would fade, but they didn't. So he was left to keep up the pretence of fitting in when really he wasn't part of any group, resulting in a less than impressive list of friends. With all these thoughts, Alex couldn't even pretend to sleep. He shouted down to Dina, but got no reply..

Chapter Two: "You're Welcome"
He called his step-mother's name again as he made his way downstairs. The house was quiet, Dina wasn't home anymore. Alex sighed and made his way to the kitchen to get a drink. He was kind of annoyed she had left him, he had just been thinking that maybe he should get some advice from someone older. Though he realised that if he asked Dina for advice he would have to spend most of the conversation explaining his actions. He pondered for a second at why he seemed to have no worries about telling Dina he was gay. He had bottled up in front of his sister yet Dina, his own parental figure, didn't appear to bother him. Maybe, Alex thought, it was because he didn't really feel close to Dina. Gulping down the last drop of water, Alex made his way towards the stairs just as the doorbell rang.

Dressed in only his underwear, Alex thought nothing of opening the front door to check who was there. He stepped out onto his front porch and found himself in front of a teenage boy he had never seen before. Before Alex could think twice the boy turned and saw Alex, beginning to walk over to him. Alex desperately tried to hide his excitement, though his dumb heart took over and he stood gazing at this mystery boy. Realising there was an uncomfortable silence, Alex scolded himself and snapped out of his ridiculous daydream.

"Can I help you?" Alex asked, his voice quivering as he worked up the courage to speak. "Do you live here?" The boy replied with a question. Alex nodded and he continued, "Are your parents home?" "Why, you're not going to try and sell them something, are you?" Alex pondered.

"Boy you see right through me!" The guy laughed as Alex smiled bashfully. "I just moved to Pleasanview a few weeks ago, my name's David Asher." He held out his hand and Alex smiled as he shook it. "Alexander. Um, Alex Goth!" Alex said, stumbling over his words. "So I was hoping to earn a small bit of money. You know, washing your car or your windows, random jobs like that. Do you need a gardener?" "I guess so, I don't really know." Alex replied, unsure if his father or Dina had already hired a gardener. "Well, are your parents home?" David asked again.

"No, it's just me, apparently." Alex sighed, realising that Dina had left him. Although, he hoped, maybe it was a good thing he was alone. "Well I really ought to talk to your mum or dad. If I give you my number will you tell them I stopped by?" David said, getting ready to leave. "Well, wait a minute, you look like you're all ready to go, can't I set you to work?" "Sure, I guess. Are you sure though, I didn't just wake you up or anything?" David said, pointing out Alex's clothes.

"What this, no... I wear these all the time." Alex replied without thinking. "I mean, I don't wear my underwear all the time. No, I do wear my underwear all the time... Well, except on a couple of occasions, but you know how it is when you're in a hurry and nothing's clean? It's not as if anyone's gonna know and... I'm rambling!" Alex blushed, realising that in some sick and twisted way he and Meadow were actually more suited for each other than he first thought.

"Ha, it's okay. I didn't mean to embarrass you. If you want to wear that it's fine by me, Heck if you want to wear even less I won't object, as long as you're paying me." David said as he opened his eyes wide as Alex gave him a confused glance. "That came out rather more rude than I anticipated. I should get going." Alex wasn't sure, he had never been on the receiving end of someone else's advances, but for a second there he was positive David might have possibly flirted with him. Even if he was wrong and even if he made a complete fool of himself once again he decided that he'd rather take a chance then let it walk on by, possibly right out of his life.

"Well wait a second, I might not be able to hire you as our permanent gardener but if you're any good with plumbing..." "This doesn't involve a plunger does it, because when I said random I didn't quite mean..." "No! God no, what I was gonna say is our hottub is on the blink. I don't know exactly what's wrong with it, just that there's no bubbles. You wouldn't by any chance be able to fix it." Alex said, 'And possibly buy me some time to commit vandalism in my own house in order for you to stay longer' he thought to himself.

"I can take a look, I cleaned out the pool at this Motel I onced stayed at a couple of times and helped the Super repair the hottub. All though it wasn't so much as a hottub as it was a hole in the ground with warm water in it!" David laughed. Alex laughed too and felt his heart race, he was going to be entertaining his first ever possible boyfriend... Sure he was jumping the gun but Alex couldn't help it, he really liked David.

"Well it's just round the back," Alex pointed, "and the first room next to the pool has a bunch of clean swimming trunks which you're welcome to wear as you might have to get a little wet." Alex turned red once more as he felt sure Meadow was gonna jump out any second and yell surprise as she, David and about fifty kids from his Year laughed at him for ever thinking someone could like him like that. "That's really nice of you, I would have just gone in wearing my underwear if you hadn't have said anything." 'Crap', Alex thought as he quickly rushed upstairs to get dressed.

Chapter Three: "Company For The Day" When Alex emerged a mere ten minutes later from his bedroom he smiled as he walked out on to the patio, seeing David relaxing amongst a very bubbly hottub. ?I see you got it working then.? Alex said as he made his presence known. David jumped and stuttered over his words. ?Oh! Well, It didn?t take all that much really. It wasn?t anything mechanical like you made it sound, just something to do with the electronics.? David explained. ?Electric and water? I heard those two don?t mix very well.? Alex joked. ?Yeah! Can you believe there used to be a time when hottub?s didn?t exist?? ?Balderdash!? Alex exclaimed. A wry look from David made him mentally kick himself in the gut as he promised never to say that word again. Trying his luck, Alex attempted to charm David. ?Mind if I join you??

?Really?? David asked as he reached over to the hottub?s panel and switched off the jet stream. ?Why exactly?? David innocently asked. `I can think of a few reasons? Alex thought to himself. Unfortunately Alex realised how overly-strong he was coming on and changed his tactics. ?Sorry, I was letting my mouth do the talking but my brain was elsewhere. How about I whip up some food to repay you for fixing that?? Alex offered. ?Well, I kind of wanted paying in cash.? David cautiously asked. ?Oh! Sure, I just thought you might be hungry.? ?I am! Let me just dry off and I?ll join you.? David smiled as he hoisted himself out of the tub and walked off to get a towel, not noticing Alex?s admiring gaze from behind. Snapping himself out of his daydream, Alex rushed to the kitchen to make some basic food for himself and David.

?That was fast!? David said as he sat down to eat with Alex. Alex smiled as he intently watched David chewing and eating his grilled sandwich. But after one bite, David looked up from his plate with a concerned glance. ?I need to leave.? He said as he placed down the sandwich. Before he could sit up Alex hoped he could intervene and change David?s mind. ?Why, did I do something wrong?? ?No, nothing wrong. You?ve been super nice, but I thought I might have overstayed my welcome.?
|
| |
Created: 05.04.2006 - Updated: 05.04.2006
?Not at all.? Alex replied. ?You?re here as my friend.? Alex didn?t hesitate to say. David smiled as Alex corrected himself. ?We are friends, right?? ?Yeah. Although I don?t really know all that much about you. How long have you lived in Pleasantview?? David asked, resuming his meal. ?All my life. My family are a pretty big part of the town?s historical background. Apparently we?re one of the two original founding families.? ?The other?s the Pleasants?, right?? David asked. ?Yeah, they still live here.? Alex replied.

?I know. Mrs. Pleasant was round our house a few weeks ago to welcome us to the neighbourhood. She seemed pretty uptight, I definitely know my mum didn?t like her much.? ?Oh well, she has a lot of town pride, it sometimes comes across as arrogance.? Alex laughed as he thought about her. ?Why don?t you think your mum liked her?? ?I just could tell. I?m pretty close to my mum like that. I have been since, well, forever I guess.? David said, hesitating a bit towards the end Alex sensed, making him want to find out more. ?That?s nice. My mum disappeared when I was little? I don?t know why I just told you that, I?m sorry.? ?No, it?s okay. I?m sorry.? David shuffled uncomfortably.
|
| |
Created: 05.04.2006 - Updated: 05.04.2006
?You weren?t to know. I?m glad you do, it saves me talking about it later.? ?Were you close, before she went missing?? ?Well, she was my mum. I wasn?t very old but, looking back on the times I can remember, we were happy. It was a shock when she left.? ?She left?? David asked, noting how Alex had said different before. ?Well, my dad won?t admit it, but I think it?s pretty obvious she left. I always just guess she walked out without telling us because she couldn?t bear to say goodbye.?
|
| |

?Us?? David asked. ?My sister, Cassandra, she pretty much raised me after that. My dad kind of had a break-down I think, but that was ages ago and he?s re-married now and I?m expecting another sibling soon.? Alex said, smiling for the first time at the thought of his baby brother or sister. ?That?s nice. Do you live here with all of them?? David enquired. Alex told David about his recent time with the Caliente sisters and Don Lothario, and how he lived here with his dad and Dina now. ?Wow, you?ve almost travelled as much as me!?
|
| |
Created: 05.04.2006 - Updated: 05.04.2006
?Hardly! I?ve never even left this old neighbourhood.? Alex revealed. ?So you know it inside-out then? Because if I need a tour guide I?d much rather call you than Mrs. Pleasant.? David joked as the two laughed out loud. As Alex smiled and looked deeply into David?s eyes, he was disturbed to hear the doorbell ring from around the front. David looked towards the door as Alex didn?t move. ?Was that your doorbell?? He asked. ?No, I don?t think so.? Alex said, pretending to not hear it. Unfortunately fate was against him as a multiple ring echoed out from the bell. Alex still didn?t move though.
|

?Aren?t you gonna get it?? David asked. ?Someone else will.? Alex assured him. ?I thought you said no-one else was here.? ?They aren?t.? Alex said as he scrunched his face in defeat. ?Ugh, I?ll be right back.? ?I should probably be getting off now...? David started as Alex held out his hands in protest.
|
| |
Created: 05.04.2006 - Updated: 05.04.2006
?Whoa, whoa! You don?t have to be getting off. I?ll be literally two seconds.? ?Oh, okay.? David smiled as Alex looked into his eyes once more and left with a sense of achievement.
|

Rushing towards the front of the house, Alex rolled his eyes as Lilith Pleasant greeted him. ?Hey. I brought over you assignment from Chemistry. I know you don?t like to get behind with your work.? Alex quickly snatched the work from Lilith but paused. ?What were you doing in my Chemistry class?? ?I managed to get out of my class early to pick up your assignment. Also, Ms. Appleby told me Lance is your partner when you come back which, in my opinion, he looked way too happy about, if you know what I mean! I swear you?ve like, unlocked the closet at school since you came out.? Lilith laughed as Alex frowned.
|
| |
Created: 05.04.2006 - Updated: 05.04.2006
?Try `since I was pushed out?! And no thank you, Lance has more luck getting it on with a test-tube!? Alex crudely gestured as Lilith laughed her head off as she began to head inside. Alex stopped her halfway though. ?Where do you think you?re going?? ?Inside! The nature channel has monkey?s on on a Friday.? Lilith informed Alex. ?Then go home and watch it, I?m busy.? ?Doing what?? Lilth asked. ?Um, chemistry! Apparently.? Alex made-up. ?No you?re not. You?re hiding something in there?? Lilith guessed as she tried to get inside. ?You know what? You were right, I?m hiding Lance in there and he?s afraid you?ll `out? him so get going.? Alex joked as he pushed Lilith away. ?Alright! But ugh, can I use your bathroom first? I foolishly stopped of at the Coffee Hut before I came here.? Lilith said. Alex once again refused.
|
| |
Created: 05.04.2006 - Updated: 05.04.2006
?What? Oh my god, you really are hiding someone in there.? Lilith said with surprise. ?Yes alright. His name?s David and he?s new here and so I?m like cool to him because I?m as old as the furniture and please just leave before you make me come to my senses and realise I have no hope in hell with him.? Alex confessed. ?Is he gay?? Lilith asked with an inquisitive smile.
|
| |
Created: 05.04.2006 - Updated: 05.04.2006
?I don?t know. It?s not exactly something that naturally comes up in a conversation.? Alex said, feeling a little guilty about talking behind David's back. ?Sure it is. `Hi, I?m gay, are you gay, wanna be gay together? see how easy it is? Do you want me to ask him?? Lilith calmly asked. ?You will do no such thing!? Alex protested.
|
| |
Created: 05.04.2006 - Updated: 05.04.2006
?Oh come on, you know me, I won?t screw it up.? Lilith promised. Alex paused and contemplated her offer. It would help to know, he thought to himself.
|
| |
Created: 05.04.2006 - Updated: 05.04.2006
?You promise you?ll be obscure and discreet and not mention your mother?? ?My mother?? Lilith asked confused. ?Promise?? Alex asked once again.

Chapter Four: "Who's That Girl?"
Dina had received a few un-approving stares when she answered her mobile phone in the hospital, though she didn't care as it was worth it just to her her good friend Laine on the other end. Elaine Talbot had been Dina's friend since high school, in fact at first they didn't get on at all because their personalities were so alike. But as they grew older they became closer and a friendship formed. Dina was there for Laine through the break-up of her first marriage. Teenage sweethearts they were, but overtime Laine grew bored and started an affair with a mysterious and charming man called Consuelo Anasia. Last year she had finally got up enough courage to leave her husband and devote herself to him. Dina had last seen Laine shortly after her own affair began, afterwards Laine had gone on holiday around the world with Consuelo, getting married on a beach far far away when her divorce finally came through.

It was Laine who Dina confided in about Mortimer's will when she discovered it. Though with everything that had happened Dina had completely forgot about the e-mail she sent her on Christmas Eve. "When were gonna tell me you were pregnant?" Laine said in shock.
|
| |

"Now!" Dina said as the two friends hugged. "Congratulations. How far gone are you?" "It should be here next month." Dina said, not quite believing herself that she would be a mother so soon. "It. You don't know if it's a Girl or a Boy?" Laine asked. "You know I don't. I've had so many tests that I could probably find out, I just haven't asked. Maybe, I don't know, I wanna be surprised." Dina thought to herself. "Tests. Nothing's wrong is there? I mean you didn't mention any of this in the e-mail." Laine said as Dina's eyes widened. "I totally forgot I sent you that? Maybe I should come inside." Dina suggested.

"I think you better! I'll put on an a pot of coffee." Laine offered. "No thanks, I can't seem to stomach the stuff since I got pregnant. But I wouldn't say no to a bite to eat if that's okay?" Dina asked. "Sure, although we haven't got much in, Consuelo's getting some groceries on his way home from work tonight." "How are the two of you? Married life treating you well?" Dina asked with an inquisitive smile. "Listen, I didn't know it could be this way!" Laine said as she pretended to fan herself. The friends laughed as they made their way inside Laine's house.
|
| |
Created: 05.04.2006 - Updated: 05.04.2006
It was small and pretty bare, the house had been Consuelo's originally and Laine moved in when she left her husband. Despite what Dina would expect they were in no hurry to move. Dina took the weight off her feet as she ravenously ate her sandwich. "Would you two like another?" Laine said as she laughed. Dina blushed a little and stopped eating. "I'm sorry, but I can't seem to stop eating lately." Dina explained. "Don't be sorry, you have a good excuse to eat. Anyway, so when did this happen? Obviously some time ago." Laine assumed, referring to Dina's pregnancy. "I found out in November but didn't tell anyone except Nina until last month."
|
| |
Created: 05.04.2006 - Updated: 05.04.2006
"Why's that?" Laine asked. "Because I didn't know whether or not I was gonna keep it." Dina revealed. Laine's face looked shocked and worried as she pressed Dina for information. "This doesn't have anything to do with that drunken mistake you told me about before I left, does it?" Laine guessed as Dina nodded and took another bite to eat.

"I just got back from the hospital. I was there to get the results of my paternity test... Well, Mortimer's paternity test." Dina revealed. "He knows?" Laine asked as Dina quickly shook her head. "And what about that guy, Eddie?" Again Dina shook her head, this time widening her eyes as if to say 'yeah right'. "So what did the test results say?" Dina breathed deeply as she prepared to speak the truth about her affair.

"It's his baby. It's Ed's." Dina said half-heartedly as Laine began biting her nails. "Oh Dina, what are you gonna do." Laine sympathised. "The only thing I can do, stay with Mortimer and lie to him. You read what he threatened do, if he finds out I had an affair I'll be out on the street without a penny." Dina explained. "But surely it's better you were honest now. Don't assume he'll never find out, if he does and that baby's already here it'll devastate him." "I'm thinking maybe, touch wood, if he ever found out he would keep it a secret so as to protect his name." Dina hoped. "That's a lot to hope for. Even if he did he'd never forgive you, then you'd be stuck in a loveless marriage forever." Laine told Dina as she whimpered and realised the full extent of what was going on.
|
| |
Created: 05.04.2006 - Updated: 05.04.2006
"Well then he'll never find out. The only people that know who the real father is are me and you." "What about Nina? She knows about the affair; surely she's put two and two together by now." Laine asked. "Nina has her own trouble's to deal with. You didn't know but she was pregnant and she had an accident and lost the baby." Laine's face showed a look of shock and devastation. "I am so sorry. When did this happen?" "Over Christmas, after me and Mortimer moved out. I didn't tell you but me and Nina haven't spoken since I left. I just can't face her, not after what's happened. I'll break down and confess everything, and like she really wants to hear all my dirty little secrets after she's just had a miscarriage."
|
| |
Created: 05.04.2006 - Updated: 05.04.2006
"So what about Ed? You don't think he'll suspect anything when he finds out your pregnant?" Laine asked a question Dina had been ignoring for a while now. "He might, I hope to god he doesn't but if does... Oh Laine, what am I gonna do?" Dina asked with a small, quivering voice. "Exactly what you said. You're gonna leave this house and imagine that the results of that test came back positive. You and Mortimer are gonna raise a beautiful baby and live happily ever after." Dina looked at Laine sarcastically and rolled her eyes. "Yes and then I'm going to sprout wings and live in the clouds." "Fine. Then you leave here, confess the whole thing to Mortimer, move out and raise a baby on your own with no help from your family or friends." Laine said harshly.
|
| |
Created: 05.04.2006 - Updated: 05.04.2006
Laine was right, though it pained Dina to hear it. She was in a situation that could surely be doing no good for her baby. Now her pregnancy was public she would forever be panicking about Mortimer or Ed finding out the truth. Dina wished for a moment that she had never gotten the results of her paternity test. She wished that she could just return home and live out the rest of her pregnancy in ignorant bliss. Sighing in complete desperation, Dina handed her plate over to Laine, "I think will take that extra sandwich." She said, knowing that with Laine she could be one-hundred percent honest. Staying around for a few more minutes and enjoying a well needed break from reality was exactly what Dina needed.

Chapter Five: "Play The Fool"
Lilith was introduced to David by Alex, who wasn't so keen on leaving the two alone but Lilith insisted she probe David whilst Alex wasn't there so he could be more honest. "So, do you like swimming?" Lilith asked as she noticed David's swimwear. She sat down as David looked down and shrugged his shoulders. "I guess. Oh but I wasn't swimming if that's what you were thinking, Alex asked me if I could fix his hottub." "Oh he did, did he?" Lilith asked, smiling mischievously. She paused and realised that she hadn't quite heard David correctly. "Why did he ask you to fix his hottub?" "Well, I kind of offered, it's what I was doing at his house anyway." David smiled.

"You fix hottubs?" Lilith asked, growing more confused. "Oh, no! I came over to see if he needed any jobs doing like washing the car or mowing the lawn. That's what I do, I need the money." David confessed as Lilith finally understood. So you do this sort of thing a lot?" Lilith assumed.

"I've always been a helper. I guess it's in my nature but you could say it's how I was raised." David revealed, pausing himself to contemplate this. "So you just moved here." Lilith stated. "Me and my mum." David replied quickly. Tilting his head like a confused puppy, David asked Lillith something. "Why are you asking me so many questions?" "No particular reason. Just if Alex likes you I guess we might be spending some time together." Lilith honestly replied as David nodded. "Oh, I see." David replied as he nervously looked at his feet. Lilith realised what she said may have come out wrong and tried to fix it.

"Not that he told me he likes you... Or if he likes you anyway. Which I don't think he does, you know, as nothing more than..." Lilith paused as she broke out into a sweat and realised she had made the situation a whole lot more complicated.

As David began to reply Lilith decided to quickly change the subject. "Oh No!" She shouted at the TV. "Redmond couldn't pass if his life depended on it." As David paused Lilith explained that she was talking about football.

"So you're not into sports." Lilith assumed. "No, I love sports. I just don't follow them on TV. I'm usually out taking part in them." David informed her. "Oh, so you like playing sports. That's interesting." Lilith said as she began to feel Alex may be getting his hopes up for no reason. But she decided not to give up for him, scolding herself for building David up as a stereotype. "Well not football so much. I'm more of a tennis player, but I'll take part in anything." "Anything. That's good, I like a kid that's not afraid to try new things." Lilith proclaimed with exuberance. "And what's that supposed to mean?" David enquired, becoming suspicious again. "I just mean... You're pretty young right?" Lilith asked, coming up with a plan to finally get some answers. "Fourteen." David replied.

"Well David," Lilith said softly as she scooched over, "how do you feel about older women?" Lilith asked David as she winked at him. Subtlety had never been a friend of Lilith's, if she needed something doing she would always take the most direct approach. But perhaps this was going even too far for her. Lilith held her composure but secretly panicked as she realised that she could either scare David into leaving or end up giving him the wrong idea.

"Oh! Um, er... Well!" David sutured as he nervously shifted into the corner of the Goth's couch. "Hey. Don't worry. I get it, you're afraid of women with experience." Lilith said as she smiled and relaxed back into her original position. "I'm not offended." "I bet you have a lot of experience." David blurted out. "Okay. Now I'm offended." Lilith stated as she shot David a cold hard glance. Seeing David's eyes dart towards the door, Lilith rolled her eyes and decided to call off her charade. Though whether or not she could give Alex the answers he wanted she didn't know.

Creeping quietly, Alex watched Lilith and David talk. Though his eyes were mainly fixated on David. Alex felt his heart beat faster as he began to imagine finally being comfortable with who he was. If he just had someone who could relate to what he was going through, someone to take his worries away. Alex could finally be happy... He just hoped it could be with David.

Sure he had only met David a few hours ago, but it had been the happiest few hours he had experienced in a while. Being around another boy his age who didn't know all about his past troubles. It was ignorant to think he wouldn't ever find out, but Alex hoped by that time the two of them would be good enough friends that he would understand. Making his way into the living room, Lilith stood up and headed towards the door. "You're leaving?" Alex asked. "I think it's best." Lilith said with a sigh. Alex's face dropped as he realised things may not have gone to plan. He was especially worried when David also stood up.

"Wait, I'll go. I've been here long enough." David exclaimed. "No, it's fine. I have other things I need to be doing right now." Lilith said to David. "You're just leaving because of what I said." David revealed. Lilith huffed as she faced David. "I already told you, it was just a joke. Stop taking things so seriously. You should stay, Alex has something he wants to tell you." Lilith said as she headed back towards the door and smiled with victory. Alex felt the colour drain from his face as he nervously approached David.

"What was all that about." He enquired. "Oh nothing really, I think I just called her a slut is all." David said with wide eyes. "What?!" Alex said in shock. "Why did you leave me and her alone? You weren't... I thought..." David began as Alex apologised.

"I'm sorry, it was all her idea but it was my fault for even thinking that... I'm just, sorry." Alex finished his sentence midway. "So you asked her to say those things?" David said with a hurt look on his face. "No! I cannot be held responsible for what she said. That girl is a wild cannon!" Alex defended himself. "So you didn't tell her to hit on me." David revealed.

"Hit on you?" Alex repeated in shock. "Why would I... Oh my god." Alex said as he buried his face into his hands and let out a small giggle. David joined in and soon the two were in fits of hysterics.

"I can just imagine the look on your face!" Alex exclaimed through his gasps for breath as he received a playful nudge from David. "Hey, she's sweet. But so barking up the wrong tree." David said. "Not your type, huh?" Alex asked, regaining his compusure.

Alex returned his gaze with one of confusion, "I don't know. What do you mean?" "Oh, nothing. I just... I really enjoyed today, with you." David told Alex. Alex felt his heart do a flip-flop as he tried to make his mouth move to reply. "With me?" Was all Alex could say.

"Any other house that would ask me to repair their hottub would receive a very firm no. That's certainly not my forte. But for you, I was willing to give it a shot." David said as he smiled, feeling a little bit guilty for finally telling Alex the truth. "Really? You risked electrocution just so you could come inside?" Alex asked. David laughed again as Alex's smile grew wider. "Hey, I fixed it didn't I? All for free I might add." David reminded Alex.

"Wait." David said as he reached out and grabbed Alex's hand. Alex stopped and looked down at David's hand wrapped around his own. "Like I said, fixing hottub's isn't my job, today was just a one off favour for a friend." David said as Alex looked up and saw David smiling at him once again.

"Well, thank you. For everything." Alex said as he kept hold of David's hand. Those few seconds felt like an eternity to Alex. It was just as well, because David quickly let go and nervously rubbed his neck.

"I'm gonna go get changed." David said as Alex realised David had goosebumps up and down his arm. Walking off quickly, Alex rolled his eyes back into his head and let out a groan of relief. Sure he hadn't got the answers he had wanted, but Alex was certain Daivd had made it pretty clear that the two were indeed good friends... Perhaps even more.

Epilogue: "Just The Beginning"
Getting ready to face the real world, and by that Dina meant her neatly crafted lie, Laine decided to give Dina one more thing to think about. "You know, I was thinking about this Ed guy. you haven't ever thought about raising the baby with him?" Laine asked. Dina looked at her as if she was crazy. "Are you serious? Not only admit to everyone I had an affair but then to move in with my fellow adulterer and raise our illegitimate child in a house a few streets over from my husband. I doubt it." Dina informed Laine. "Listen for a second. I know it took a while, but look at my life. I was in almost the same position and although I had to go through some pretty thick crap I would do it all over again if it meant me and Consuelo could be together." "But it's not the same, you were in love with the guy you had an affair with." Dina retaliated. "And you're not in love with Ed?" Laine asked as Dina gave a firm negative response. "Honestly. Going back to him time and time again..."

"Twice! You make it sound like I long to be with him." Dina said. "Well something obviously brought you back to him. And now you're going to be raising this child, knowing it's his flesh and blood. If it were me I'd seriously think about who it was I wanted to spend the rest of my life with." "Well it's not you. I know you don't understand it but I do love Mortimer... I mean," Dina said, remembering that she didn't have to lie around Laine, "I used to. I still do on some level. But it doesn't matter because I don't love Ed and there's no way me and my baby would be better off living with him." "You would be better off. Because you wouldn't have to lie anymore." Laine reminded Dina. That would be a perk, Dina thought, but the only perk. Out of all the choices she could make, leaving Mortimer and moving in with Ed to raise their baby was at the bottom of her list. Although it was still on her list, which meant that the thought would still be with Dina long after she left Laine's house.

When David returned, Alex sauntered over to him with a cheery smile. "Hey, how about a game of cards?" Alex asked, in his mind hoping that he would get away with suggesting strip poker. "I'm sorry I can't." David said quickly as he headed toward the door. "You're leaving?" Alex said as he soon lost his cheery smile and it was clear to see he was disappointed. David looked at Alex and saw his face.

"I wish I could stay, really. But I left my phone in the pocket of my pants and when I checked I had a few very loud voicemail calls from my mother. If I don't get home now I could very well not be coming over again until I'm un-grounded." David explained. "Oh no, it's all my fault." Alex said with guilt. "No! I'll explain everything to her, she's cool, she'll understand. I hope!" David reassured Alex. Alex nodded and halted David once more before he left.

|
 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006
Around midday it rang. Mortimer was out but his son Alex was at home, off from school because he had complained of a headache and upset stomach. He was in his bedroom so Dina was free to speak about the test results in private.
|
 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006
"What do you mean you need me to come down? What's wrong, I thought you said you could tell me over the phone?" Dina argued as she was informed a few more 'routine' tests needed to be performed. "Well when I get there and have these done you can tell me then, right?" Dina asked.
|
 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006
|
 |

|
 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006

 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006

|
 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006
|
 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006
"No, it's just me, apparently." Alex sighed, realising that Dina had left him. Although, he hoped, maybe it was a good thing he was alone. "Well I really ought to talk to your mum or dad. If I give you my number will you tell them I stopped by?" David said, getting ready to leave. "Well, wait a minute, you look like you're all ready to go, can't I set you to work?" "Sure, I guess. Are you sure though, I didn't just wake you up or anything?" David said, pointing out Alex's clothes.
|
 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006
"What this, no... I wear these all the time." Alex replied without thinking. "I mean, I don't wear my underwear all the time. No, I do wear my underwear all the time... Well, except on a couple of occasions, but you know how it is when you're in a hurry and nothing's clean? It's not as if anyone's gonna know and... I'm rambling!" Alex blushed, realising that in some sick and twisted way he and Meadow were actually more suited for each other than he first thought.
|
 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006

|
 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006

|
 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006

|
 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006
?Not at all.? Alex replied. ?You?re here as my friend.? Alex didn?t hesitate to say. David smiled as Alex corrected himself. ?We are friends, right?? ?Yeah. Although I don?t really know all that much about you. How long have you lived in Pleasantview?? David asked, resuming his meal. ?All my life. My family are a pretty big part of the town?s historical background. Apparently we?re one of the two original founding families.? ?The other?s the Pleasants?, right?? David asked. ?Yeah, they still live here.? Alex replied.
|
 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006
?I know.
|
 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006
?You weren?t to know. I?m glad you do, it saves me talking about it later.? ?Were you close, before she went missing?? ?Well, she was my mum. I wasn?t very old but, looking back on the times I can remember, we were happy. It was a shock when she left.? ?She left?? David asked, noting how Alex had said different before. ?Well, my dad won?t admit it, but I think it?s pretty obvious she left. I always just guess she walked out without telling us because she couldn?t bear to say goodbye.?
|
 |
Created: 05.04.2006 Updated: 05.04.2006
?Us?? David asked. ?My sister, Cassandra, she pretty much raised me after that.
